NMC Teachers Buzz: Field Trip to Virtual Morocco! Mon Dec 11 6pm SLT

The Global Outreach Morocco team at Johnson & Wales University has partnered with the Ministry of Tourism of Morocco on an experiential learning project using Second Life to create a virtual Morocco.

Virtual Morocco contains monuments and experiences from Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakesh, and includes space for projecting real-world events into the virtual environment. The goals of this multidisciplinary team project are to provide an immersive experience that educates visitors about Moroccan culture while enticing them to think about Morocco as a travel destination.

This is a fascinating SL student project which involved students going to Morocco RL [ http://tinyurl.com/yasr9d ] and then coming back to demonstrate what they learned about the country and the culture with a project build in SL. The build also includes some very interesting and innovative scripted objects which could be useful to other such student projects in SL. The students will be presenting this formally in 3rd week of December. For this field trip, Ann Enigma gave us an overview of the project and then 2-3 of the students talked us through their builds.

[18:03] Leila Hawthorne: yes

[18:03] Persis Trilling: yes

[18:03] Ann Enigma: In RL I'm Hilary Mason, and I teach at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI. I run this project along with my colleague Mehdi Moutahir (who is Desty Kenzo in SL).

[18:04] Ann Enigma: We're actually holding our Grand Opening event next week, so everything on the island is going through some final testing and adjustement. If you would like an invitation, please send me an IM after the tour!

[18:04] Desty Kenzo: Greetings and Welcome

[18:04] Ann Enigma: We also welcome any comments or questions that you might have.

[18:05] Ann Enigma: I'm going to give you an overview of the project and how we got to where we are.

[18:05] Ann Enigma: Then talk about the tools we're building here, and finally, our team members (those Virtual Moroccans) will give you a tour and explain the various builds.

[18:05] Mabel Steinhoff: hi, all

[18:05] Ann Enigma: What you see here on this island is the result of a multidisciplinary project that has been running since last spring.

[18:05] Corwin Carillon: hi mabel

[18:05] Ann Enigma: Hi, Mabel. Welcome. :)

[18:06] Ann Enigma: In addition to being professors, Mehdi and I are advisors to the Community Action Association, which is a student organization that has nearly 500 members. We run several "alternative break" trips to various locations.

[18:06] Ann Enigma: When we decided to plan a trip to Morocco, we wanted to provide an opportunity for students to use their academic skills - whatever those may be - to study and interact with a foreign culture.

[18:07] Ann Enigma: We also both share a love of technology. :)

[18:07] William Pharaoh: will we be breaking into groups? or touring on our own?

[18:07] Ann Enigma: We'll don't need to break into groups... so far the server is holding up.

[18:08] Ann Enigma: One part of the Global Outreach Morocco project was an SL build of the Hassan II Mosque (the prototype of the build you see here today).

[18:08] William Pharaoh: do you have more info on 'alternative breaks'?

[18:08] Ann Enigma: We presented the concept to the Ministry of Tourism in Morocco, and they loved it! Both the educational goals of the project, and the ability that the platform has to showcase Morocco.

[18:08] Ann Enigma: William: Absolutely. Morocco is not the only program we run, just the only one that is using SL. :)

[18:08] Detector .3: Web server says: Records added.

[18:08] Byrd Kew: Hey dude

[18:09] Ann Enigma: The idea is that students engage in a week of service to learn about a culture. One of our other programs is to Mexico, where we built schools and studied immigration issues.

[18:09] Byrd Kew: nice outfit

[18:09] Byrd Kew: are you stuck?

[18:09] William Pharaoh: I know of some Eastern European work being done by some Quaker & Mennonite schools

[18:10] Ann Enigma: In Morocco, we wanted to provide a means for students to study a culture and share their experiences with others.

[18:10] Mabel Steinhoff: very interesting project, thats why Im here

[18:10] Ann Enigma: Our University is also built around the idea of "experiential education".

[18:10] William Pharaoh: what kind of langauage training did you give students before the trip?

[18:11] Ann Enigma: This was, for us, a perfect opportunity to combine RL travel, experiential learning, and SL.

[18:11] Ann Enigma: I know we have a lot of educators here, so I won't dwell too much on pedagogy. :)

[18:11] Desty Kenzo: Oui William ... we have engaged in Cultural training - as far as language we had bilingual and trilingual team members that facilitate the interractions in Morocco

[18:12] Kim Chihuly: much more fun than just drunken partying on the beach!

[18:12] Ann Enigma: Kim: Yes!

[18:12] Mabel Steinhoff: where should I go for the tour, Anne?

[18:12] Ann Enigma: For this project we used those principle of project-based learning... rather than recreating a classroom in SL, and trying to teach with a lecture, we asked students to recreate their experiences of Morocco here.

[18:12] Ann Enigma: Mabel: right here!

[18:13] Ann Enigma: If you haven't done so already, please click on the InfoFez stand for your free fez.

[18:13] Sarah Kubo: Are the Virtual Moroccan's students?

[18:13] Ann Enigma: As you walk around the island, you should see cultural information.

[18:13] Ann Enigma: Sarah: Yes!

[18:13] Ann Enigma: All of these virtual moroccan are our undergraduate team members.

[18:13] Mabel Steinhoff: thank, Ann

[18:14] Webhead Link: what did they build - everything here?

[18:14] Sarah Kubo: How many all together?

[18:14] Ann Enigma: Yes. Everything here was built by this team, since September.

[18:14] William Pharaoh: could you intoduce some of your students if they happen to be here?

[18:14] Ann Enigma: Six students, and myself and Desty.

[18:14] Bjornson Donaldo: hello, i am builder/designer on this project

[18:14] Ann Enigma: Sure! Actually, why don't you each introduce yourselves? Where you're from, and what you got out of this project?

[18:15] Webhead Link: what was the experience of building like to them?

[18:15] Sarah Kubo: Maybe they could line up near you -- it is so crowded. (please)

[18:15] Deus Blankes is Online

[18:15] Robyn Ophelia: Hello I am Robyn and I am in charge of marketing and content!

[18:15] Sarah Kubo: thank you! I see now.

[18:15] Ann Enigma: Sarah: we're working on that. :)

[18:16] misterchris Oxberger: hello, my real name is chris and i also am a designer/builder on this project

[18:16] Corwin Carillon: hi bjornston, robyn, chris

[18:16] Ann Enigma: Sorry, folks, it's always a little chaotic when we're all here.

[18:16] Kyle Childs: I'm Kyle and I design and I'm basically awesome

[18:16] Janor Slichter: hehe

[18:16] misterchris Oxberger: the experience was great - we're all pretty big nerds so it was great working with people who were intrested in working on a new medium

[18:16] Sarah Kubo: Applause to all (Haven't figured out gestures yet). It's amazing

[18:17] Corwin Carillon: lol hi kyle

[18:17] Bjornson Donaldo: my RL name is bjorn and i build and design

[18:17] Ilene Pratt: I'ts more like Morocco with all these avatars!!

[18:17] Kyle Childs: hello Corwin!

[18:17] Ann Enigma: Now, one of the questions that we are interested in is how people use spaces like this.

[18:17] Lyr Lobo smiles and nods

[18:17] Mabel Steinhoff: hi, Kyle and Corwin!

[18:17] Webhead Link: what are your majors?

[18:17] Kyle Childs: Hi Mabel

[18:17] misterchris Oxberger: graphic design and new media major

[18:17] Kyle Childs: Computer Graphics and new media

[18:18] Bjornson Donaldo: 5 computer graphics and new media and 1 business marketing

[18:19] Sarah Kubo: How will you document this for job portfolio?

[18:19] Webhead Link: with those majors, just curious, why a trip to morocco?

[18:19] Desty Kenzo: We managed to form a cross-disciplinary team across colleges, Technology, Business and Hospitality

[18:19] Ann Enigma: We've built a few tools to monitor how people use this space... that Detector is one of them.

[18:19] Webhead Link: or, why not, better question :-))

[18:19] Kyle Childs: Morocco sounded like a really excellent place to go

[18:19] Bjornson Donaldo: we kind of all fell into it actually...but after becoming enrolled we worked extremely hard to do what we have done

[18:19] Cordelia Moy: What does the detector do?

[18:20] Robyn Ophelia: I was already involved in the student organization that headed the program, and I thought it was a great opportunity.

[18:20] Ann Enigma: This is a screenshot of the web visualization of the detector tools... we can see the most popular spots on the island, and show people's paths through the space as they visit.

[18:20] misterchris Oxberger: morocco is where desty is from - i think thats where the idea originated

[18:20] Janor Slichter: wow, that's a *cool* tool!

[18:20] Ann Enigma: It's not quite ready to show off yet, so no web link until next week. But if you are interested in using it, send me an IM!

[18:20] Sean McDunnough: it's not public?

[18:20] Sean McDunnough: ok

[18:21] Ann Enigma: Sean: Not yet. It's at the beta stage, and we'll be releasing it for educators and other non-profit uses soon.

[18:21] Sarah Kubo: So these are screen shots you can post on a website or print?

[18:21] Ann Enigma: This is actually a Flash application, where you can visualize the use of the island in real-time.

[18:21] Brandy Snifter 1 whispers: Cheers!!

[18:21] Janor Slichter: right on!

[18:21] Ilene Pratt: Very Cool!!

[18:21] Corwin Carillon: cool Ann!

[18:22] Ann Enigma: We are also working on integrating some RL data with SL...

[18:22] Sean McDunnough: will you make the technology available to others?

[18:22] Janor Slichter: SL-ized web log analysis! path tracking ;)

[18:22] Ann Enigma: Over here, we have a live weather feed. :)

[18:22] GetYahooWeather: Loading the weather...

[18:22] Ann Enigma: If everyone can see that... it's drawing data directly from Yahoo's weather API.

[18:23] Ann Enigma: This will also be available very soon for anyone who would like one.

[18:23] Janor Slichter: nice

[18:23] Corwin Carillon: where exactly is it Ann?

[18:23] Corwin Carillon: to the right of the stalls?

[18:23] Ann Enigma: Corwin: it's unfortunately stuck to the palm tree at the moment...

[18:23] Corwin Carillon: hehe np

[18:23] Sean McDunnough: Cool

[18:23] You shout: here!

[18:23] Kyle Childs: we have traditional moroccan tunics that you can buy over near the souks

[18:23] Ilene Pratt: It was working early - said it was 54 degrees and cloudy

[18:24] Ann Enigma: Okay, are there any questions before we start the tour?

[18:24] Sarah Kubo: I'm still very new--what are some of the features you worked into this site that take advnatage of SL?

[18:24] Sarah Kubo: Like the weather map/tracking and selling clothes

[18:25] Taamarbuuta Toshihiko: Hello again

[18:25] Ann Enigma: Sarah: The idea of this build is a "best of" Morocco... you can 'experience' visiting the country without actually traveling there.

[18:25] Ann Enigma: We have some vendors in the souks, soccer that you can play, a Mosque that you can visit, and hookah you can smoke, tea you can drink...

[18:26] Kyle Childs: Hello, avatar!

[18:26] Kyle Childs: Hello, avatar!

[18:26] Ann Enigma: There are really two goals to this build: to educate people about Morocco, and hopefully, to entice people to visit the country.

[18:26] Sarah Kubo: Will you have events here?

[18:26] Bjornson Donaldo: we are looking into hosting a live moroccan concert

[18:26] Ann Enigma: Sarah: Yes! We are happy to make this space available to anyone who has an appropriate event.

[18:26] Bjornson Donaldo: that will stream live video and audio from morocco

[18:26] Ann Enigma: And we'll be holding some of our own. :)

[18:26] Kim Chihuly: bjornson - that would be amazing

[18:26] Sarah Kubo: I can't resist, "bellydancing?"

[18:26] Taamarbuuta Toshihiko: really amazing

[18:26] Bjornson Donaldo: yes, it an exciting thought

[18:26] Ann Enigma: Sarah: You bet! It's in the cafe already. :)

[18:26] Taamarbuuta Toshihiko: I actually live in Morocco, and my friends here are so excited about this

[18:26] Ilene Pratt: What about landscape elements like the Rock of Gibraltar?

[18:27] Sarah Kubo: How did you choose what to include?

[18:27] Ann Enigma: Ilene: We had to make some obvious sacrifices to the majesty of the landscape... I would love to show the desert.

[18:27] misterchris Oxberger is Online

[18:27] Corwin Carillon: and the Atlas mountains :)

[18:27] Bjornson Donaldo: well we chose areas we actually visited, but also some places we did not see

[18:27] Ann Enigma: We built this space based on our own experiences.

[18:28] Corwin Carillon: a sim can oly hold so much *smiles*

[18:28] Ann Enigma: Taamarbuuta: I'm so glad you came!

[18:28] Ann Enigma: Exactly.

[18:28] Taamarbuuta Toshihiko: Thank you, Ann Enigma

[18:28] Sarah Kubo: I think the fez's are very creative!

[18:28] Ann Enigma: And this is hardly a static space... we are always adding and changing it.

[18:28] Taamarbuuta Toshihiko: I wouldn't have known about this without so many bloggers

[18:29] Ann Enigma: Cool. :)

[18:29] Desty Kenzo: Tamar - are you aware of any activities on SL from moroccan students or professionals ?

[18:29] Sean McDunnough: beyond your initial dev team, who will continue to build the space?

[18:29] Sarah Kubo: Who "controls" it? You all or Morocco or some agreement between?

[18:29] Bjornson Donaldo: it will be the same team

[18:29] Ann Enigma: We are currently working out the details of the final disposition of the island.

[18:29] Bjornson Donaldo: we all control it equally and cooperatively

[18:29] Sarah Kubo: Did you get a grant?

[18:30] Taamarbuuta Toshihiko: I'm not aware of anything, no

[18:30] Desty Kenzo: Sarah: this project is currently funded by a student organization

[18:30] Ann Enigma: The project has been financially supported so far by Johnson & Wales University.

[18:30] Sarah Kubo: Even better!

[18:30] Ann Enigma: I should also point out that all of the students here volunteered for this!

[18:30] Ilene Pratt: What about putting up some donation boxes? I'll bet you'd get some donations.

[18:31] Bjornson Donaldo: there actually is one...right by the spice stand

[18:31] Ilene Pratt: Ok!

[18:31] GetYahooWeather: Loading the weather...

[18:31] Ann Enigma: Ilene: We have one over behind you... and you can purchase some clothes or lamps from the souks. :)

[18:31] Sarah Kubo: For each of the students-- what is your favorite part?

[18:31] Bjornson Donaldo: there is also a free outfit for anyone to have

[18:31] Kyle Childs: of the builds?

[18:32] Bjornson Donaldo: the mosque is the obvious favorite...but i personally enjoy the garden and cafe/hookah bar

[18:32] misterchris Oxberger: working with such a new medium , learning how to use the software would be my favorite part

[18:32] Kyle Childs: i like the mosque the soccer fields and old city

[18:32] misterchris Oxberger: of the island the old city and the monkies

[18:33] Kyle Childs: robyn likes Rabat, the Old City

[18:33] Sarah Kubo: How do each of you see this fitting into your future plans?

[18:33] Kyle Childs: actually we like em all

[18:33] Kyle Childs: haha

[18:33] Bjornson Donaldo: we want to do SL when we grow up?

[18:33] Bjornson Donaldo: ; )

[18:33] Janor Slichter: hehe, nice!

[18:33] misterchris Oxberger: To be able to do this for a living preferable

[18:33] misterchris Oxberger: perferably*

[18:33] Bjornson Donaldo: it is only getting bigger and better so we feel this is something to definately invest time and skill into

[18:34] Kyle Childs: Going o Morocco changed my life

[18:34] Sarah Kubo: Very cool.

[18:34] Kim Chihuly: will new groups of students be going to morocco in the future?

[18:34] Ann Enigma: Kim: Yes! We are taking a new group this year.

[18:34] Moroccan Tip Jar: Byrd Kew donated $20

[18:34] Ann Enigma: We are actually planning to build some e-commerce features into this space.

[18:35] Ann Enigma: So that you can purchase these arts and crafts in virtual Morocco, and in RL at the same time.

[18:35] Kyle Childs: Lord Essex!

[18:35] Kyle Childs: hi!

[18:35] Ann Enigma: ...but that's for next June.

[18:35] Ann Enigma: Can we begin the tour?

[18:35] Ann Enigma: If you would all follow us to the Hassan II Mosque?

[18:36] Sariah Chihuly: it could be like the projects that students have who learn how to run restaurants by running a school restaurant --

[18:36] Ann Enigma: Sariah: That's part of our vision for this program.

[18:36] Sariah Chihuly: you could run a cyber business by doing this.

[18:36] InfoFez: Click on the into sign to learn about Muslim prayer.

[18:37] misterchris Oxberger: welcome to the inside of the mosque

[18:37] Bjornson Donaldo: well this is the inside of the Hasan II Mosque which is the second largest in the world

[18:38] Ann Enigma: If you are wearing the InfoFez, you should see some educational info as you walk around here.

[18:38] Bjornson Donaldo: normally when u enter the mosque in RL you take your shoes off...

[18:38] misterchris Oxberger: in real life, they only allow visitors at certain times as well

[18:38] Janor Slichter: you have kneeling poses?

[18:38] Kyle Childs: There should be some information among the prayer rugs as well as around the 2nd floor.

[18:39] Ann Enigma: Almost all of the textures used in this build are from original photos that we took in Casablanca (in RL).

[18:39] Sarah Kubo: I was wondering about issues of respect and violating cultural norms-- where the line is drawn between RL and SL?

[18:39] Sean McDunnough: this could certainly be a hot bed of issues!

[18:39] Ann Enigma: Sarah, that's an excellent question.

[18:39] Desty Kenzo: We have been very cautious with the information and the build

[18:39] Kyle Childs: We believe in keeping the information within the mosque strictly information and educational.

[18:39] Bjornson Donaldo: there is extreme craftmanship detail in RL, but we tried to capture the pure hugeness of the inside

[18:39] Ann Enigma: We treat this space the same way that we were treated when we visited the RL building.

[18:40] Janor Slichter: kneeling poses?

[18:40] Kyle Childs: We would like to educate people about the Islamic religion without stepping on any toes.

[18:40] Sean McDunnough: did you consult with Muslims on this?

[18:41] Sarah Kubo: Maybe you should provide kneeling animation

[18:41] Ann Enigma: In addition to being multidisciplinary, our team is multicultural - christian, jewish, muslim.

[18:41] Sean McDunnough: ah, ok

[18:41] Desty Kenzo: The actual mosque is open to the public and allows visitors to visit during non praying hours ... in SL we made sure to avoid including any element that might be considered offensive

[18:42] Ann Enigma: We are trying to be respectful to everyone's religion.

[18:42] Sean McDunnough: so the mosque is closed during prayer hours?

[18:42] misterchris Oxberger: Closed for tourism

[18:42] Sarah Kubo: What makes a mosque a mosque? Is there a ceremony?

[18:44] Ann Enigma: At the back of the building, there will be a library. The RL library is going to open in a few months, so we are planning to open the SL one at that time.

[18:44] Desty Kenzo: What makes a mosque a mosque is 5 calls for prayer per day ...

[18:44] Ann Enigma: If there are any librarians in the audience, we should chat. :)

[18:44] Ilene Pratt: Me!

[18:44] Desty Kenzo: on fridays there are longer ceremonies / prayers held in the afternoon

[18:44] Sariah Chihuly: I am a librarian

[18:44] Sarah Kubo: So until there is a leader (?muzzein?)it isn't a mosque?

[18:44] Taamarbuuta Toshihiko: (imam)

[18:45] Sarah Kubo: thanks Taamarbuuta, imam

[18:45] Ann Enigma: Let's move on to the souks and marketplace...

[18:45] Ann Enigma: These are wonderful questions, but I don't want to run out of time!

[18:45] Ann Enigma: This way, please...

[18:45] Detector .3: Web server says: Records added.

[18:46] InfoFez: Pottery is very popular in Morocco. Make sure you take some home today!

[18:46] InfoFez: Does this meat make you hungry for some Moroccan Bisteeya? Click on the "I" to learn more about this savory Moroccan dish.

[18:46] InfoFez: Spices are a common good found in the souks. You can purchase cumin, tumeric, and saffron just to name a few.

[18:46] Scarlett Qi: Sorry

[18:46] Tab Scott: ooops sorry

[18:46] Ann Enigma: These are the souks... you can buy anything you might be looking for here. :)

[18:47] Ann Enigma: We are working on a vendor that forces you to bargain.

[18:47] Janor Slichter: hehe

[18:47] florenze Kerensky: ooo coool

[18:47] Farley Scarborough gets a suddent urge to sing "What do you do with a drunken shiner."

[18:47] Sarah Kubo: awesome

[18:47] Ann Enigma: It'll be fun. :)

[18:47] Bjornson Donaldo: well this area in actual morocco is almost a labrynth of small vendors

[18:47] Ann Enigma: Bjorn built this space, so can you say a bit about it...?

[18:47] Bjornson Donaldo: so we tried to recreate the tightness of these vendors

[18:48] Bjornson Donaldo: unfortunately we could go as far inot detail as we would have liked just to stay within out projected prim count

[18:48] Bjornson Donaldo: but we are looking into offering these spcaes to be rented out to other people to sell their items

[18:49] Sarah Kubo: Will it be self-supporting then?

[18:49] Ann Enigma: ...as long as they are appropriate.

[18:49] Bjornson Donaldo: exactly, for the most part

[18:49] Ann Enigma: Sarah, it's possible... but it won't be too substantial.

[18:49] Bjornson Donaldo: we will not rely on it for a source of income, but more the idea to attract more visitors

[18:49] Sarah Kubo: Set up Rick's Place and you'll draw a crowd I bet

[18:50] Bjornson Donaldo: haha we have talked about it

[18:50] Bjornson Donaldo: but we havent quite figured out copyrights and such

[18:50] Sean McDunnough: and to create more authenticity?

[18:50] Corwin Carillon: rick's place ... not very moroccan

[18:50] Bjornson Donaldo: exactly corwin

[18:50] Sarah Kubo: You could contrast "fantasy Morroco" with "real" and teach a lesson.

[18:50] Taamarbuuta Toshihiko: Only at the Hyatt Casablanca

[18:50] InfoFez: Welcome to Marrakesh!

[18:50] InfoFez: Try some delicious orange juice...

[18:50] Ann Enigma: This way, please....

[18:50] Corwin Carillon: hehe Taamarbuuta

[18:51] Bjornson Donaldo: this way please

[18:51] Ann Enigma: That is a transparent wall... please come around!

[18:51] Bjornson Donaldo: this is a wall...

[18:52] Ann Enigma: Here you can see some of our RL photos.

[18:52] Bjornson Donaldo: by clicking on each photo you cycle thru multiple shots

[18:53] Bjornson Donaldo: feel free to use Alt Click to get a close look

[18:53] Corwin Carillon: these are running of your flickr site?

[18:53] Sarah Kubo: Wnen you went, did you know you were going to build SL?

[18:53] Bjornson Donaldo: they are very high quality

[18:53] Ann Enigma: Corwin: Not live... not yet. :)

[18:53] Bjornson Donaldo: yes we did

[18:53] Corwin Carillon: :)

[18:53] misterchris Oxberger: Yes, we were building in SL before we went

[18:53] Ann Enigma: Every person in our group had a digital camera, and we collected almost 5GB of photos while we were there.

[18:53] Janor Slichter: nice!

[18:53] Ann Enigma: These are the shots that we were inspired by here on the island.

[18:54] Ann Enigma: We wanted to show them to give visitors an idea of the RL experience that led to this build.

[18:54] Scarlett Qi: Is the group shot all of you?

[18:54] misterchris Oxberger: yes

[18:54] Ann Enigma: Yes, that was us!

[18:54] Bjornson Donaldo: there are about 30 different pics total here, but we will be expanding this area soon

[18:54] Kyle Childs: yep

[18:54] Bjornson Donaldo: yes it is

[18:54] Janor Slichter: lovely place!

[18:55] misterchris Oxberger: thanks

[18:55] florenze Kerensky: did you get to ride any camels?

[18:55] florenze Kerensky: :)

[18:55] Ann Enigma: hee hee

[18:55] misterchris Oxberger: we did not

[18:55] Ann Enigma: There was a donkey chasing incident.

[18:55] misterchris Oxberger: we chased around a few donkeys

[18:55] Ann Enigma: But everyone recovered... :)

[18:55] Sarah Kubo: What surprised you about Morocco?

[18:55] Cordelia Moy: Camels!

[18:55] misterchris Oxberger: That there weren't monkeys running around everywhere

[18:55] Bjornson Donaldo: what surprised me was the huge number of satellite dishes on every house

[18:56] misterchris Oxberger: not in the area we were at at least ;)

[18:56] florenze Kerensky: see any snake charmers?

[18:56] Kyle Childs: everyone is a good dresser in morocco

[18:56] Bjornson Donaldo: hundreds and hundreds per small neighborhood

[18:56] Kim Chihuly: kyle - good dresser?

[18:56] Ann Enigma: I'd like to invite those of you who have a few more minutes over to the cafe for questions...

[18:56] Taamarbuuta Toshihiko: Everyone is really well dressed

[18:56] Kyle Childs: just kidding

[18:56] misterchris Oxberger: unfortunatly we didnt get to goto merrakech where there are snake charmers, thats foir the next trip

[18:56] Kyle Childs: ok then i wasn't kidding

[18:56] Ann Enigma: and to everyone else... thank you so much for coming!

[19:02] Rik Riel: nice view from here!

[19:02] Klexaco Trotter: are we still gonna do the treasure hunt

[19:02] Ann Enigma: We didn't create these hookahs, but they are perfect for out cafe.

[19:02] Detector .3: Web server says: Records added.

[19:02] Calisto Encinal: Chris, I'm a Spanish professor. This is exactly what I want to do, but in a Spanish or LA vein.

[19:02] Ann Enigma: Does anyone have any questions?

[19:02] Bjornson Donaldo: so ms kubo...what do you do in rl"?

[19:02] misterchris Oxberger: Your thinking of using secondlife for a project?

[19:03] Calisto Encinal: How many hours would you estimate this has taken to build?

[19:03] Sarah Kubo: I was interested in the mosque issue because I visited an SL church service on Sunday. It got me thinking.

[19:03] Cafe Morocco says Goodbye, Kyle.

[19:03] Sarah Kubo: I'm a teacher/faculty developer at a university

[19:03] Bjornson Donaldo: over 300 hundred hours total

[19:03] Ann Enigma: We've been working on it since September.

[19:03] Cafe Morocco says Goodbye, Corwin.

[19:03] misterchris Oxberger: calisto this project has been in the works for about 5 months

[19:03] Desty Kenzo: Yes ... we thought of making clues based on info on the island and each correct answer will help open one of the magic" thuya boxes

[19:03] Corwin Carillon: f

[19:03] Cafe Morocco says Welcome, Rik.

[19:03] Sarah Kubo: thuya?

[19:03] Klexaco Trotter: cool

[19:03] Bjornson Donaldo: what university?

[19:03] Sarah Kubo: Westsern Kentucky University

[19:03] misterchris Oxberger: there was a learning curve to the software that has to be considered

[19:03] Calisto Encinal: 300 each or total person/hours?

[19:03] Desty Kenzo: there is a Teacher here, an american who teaches english in Fes or Mekness ... amazing stuff.

[19:03] Bjornson Donaldo: total...

[19:03] Klexaco Trotter: do u still want me to get the things from morocco?

[19:04] Rik Riel: hi ann

[19:04] Birdie Newcomb: u r Calisto?

[19:04] Detector .3: Web server says: Records added.

[19:04] Bjornson Donaldo: but hours for building decrease as we evolve our skills

[19:04] Sarah Kubo: I'm a total novice here-- what should I start learning about first in order to make things

[19:04] Desty Kenzo: yes, that will be great

[19:04] Calisto Encinal: Hi Birdie.

[19:04] Sarah Kubo: Funny-- the smoke is making my RL person cough!

[19:04] Klexaco Trotter: ok

[19:04] Kyle Childs: muhaha

[19:04] Bjornson Donaldo: start by just creating shapes and adding textures...messing around with the dimensions

[19:04] Calisto Encinal: What megapixel were your cameras?

[19:04] Cordelia Moy: I would love that.

[19:05] misterchris Oxberger: do you use photoshop at all sarah

[19:05] Bjornson Donaldo: various pixels...6-10 px

[19:05] Birdie Newcomb: The mosque was huge

[19:05] Kyle Childs: 6-10 mega pixel

[19:05] Cordelia Moy: Now if I could only try that hookah

[19:05] Sarah Kubo: I do photoshop-- lots

[19:05] misterchris Oxberger: in real life it was incredibly large

[19:05] Desty Kenzo: Hey Larry, meet Jawad

[19:05] misterchris Oxberger: photoshop skills are very helpful

[19:05] Calisto Encinal: Then you get your shape and apply the texture?

[19:05] Sarah Kubo: The mosque felt large here too

[19:05] Kyle Childs: Cordelia, just sit on one of the cushions :)

[19:05] Cafe Morocco says Goodbye, Andrewsides.

[19:05] You have offered friendship to Holden Brockholst

[19:05] Birdie Newcomb: I've just started building things. How do I make things bigger than 10m?

[19:05] Desty Kenzo: Jawad, this is the famous Larry

[19:05] Bjornson Donaldo: you cannot

[19:05] Calisto Encinal: The photos are converted to 512x512 targas?

[19:05] misterchris Oxberger: we wanted to be sure to create the experience of actually being shadowed by the mosque

[19:06] Bjornson Donaldo: combine multiple 10m

[19:06] Bjornson Donaldo: unfortunately

[19:06] Cordelia Moy: I'm trying. I keep getting todl there'sno room to sit!

[19:06] Corwin Carillon: great setup desty :)

[19:06] Ann Enigma: Ah, Birdie, you can't without using prims that have a good chance of crashing the SL client.

[19:06] Sarah Kubo: I'm going to stand up and move around, all I can see is the wall, and now Cordelia-- you're sitting.

[19:06] Kyle Childs: right over here!

[19:06] Birdie Newcomb: So how do you make columns so high?

[19:06] Birdie Newcomb: Byoneson

[19:06] Bjornson Donaldo: shall we bellydance?

[19:06] Desty Kenzo: Holden , have a seat with us :)

[19:06] Birdie Newcomb: Bjornson

[19:06] Bjornson Donaldo: the columns are so high by combining prims

[19:06] Sarah Kubo: sure--how

[19:06] Calisto Encinal: My fez still won't load.

[19:07] Holden Brockholst: I don'

[19:07] misterchris Oxberger: right click and select sit from the menu

[19:07] Ann Enigma: Calisto: the web page isn't up yet...

[19:07] Birdie Newcomb: That's a lot of prims

[19:07] Detector .3: Web server says: Records added.

[19:07] Calisto Encinal: Ann:For the infofez?

[19:07] misterchris Oxberger: calisto follow me upstairs theres some cools tuff up there as well

[19:07] Ann Enigma: Calisto: Yes!

[19:07] Ann Enigma: But it does work to show you info in-world.

[19:07] Birdie Newcomb: I could never get my info fez to work

[19:08] Holden Brockholst: Hi, Desty---Keep in mind I swore I'd never be back here. I don't know how to sit.

[19:08] Sarah Kubo: This is great-- I've always wanted to belly dance

[19:08] Sarah Kubo: I need an outfit!

[19:08] misterchris Oxberger: yeh highly entertaining

[19:08] Desty Kenzo: right click on the cushion

[19:08] misterchris Oxberger: have at it florenze

[19:08] Calisto Encinal: Do you think you get them to do salsa or flamenco?

[19:08] Detector .3: Web server says: Records added.

[19:09] Bjornson Donaldo: yes we can

[19:09] Bjornson Donaldo: but bellydancing is more traditional for morocco...

[19:09] Sarah Kubo: I'll give someone else a turn

[19:09] Sarah Kubo: But maybe you want to show someone the modern Morocco?

[19:09] Calisto Encinal: Flamenco has many Arab influences.

[19:09] misterchris Oxberger: absoltuly i actually have seen salsa dancing in SL

[19:09] Bjornson Donaldo: this balcony is a nice view of the garen and soccer fields

[19:09] Scarlett Qi: Lovely

[19:09] Sarah Kubo: You need some drum players too don't you?

[19:10] Sarah Kubo: I'm sorry-- not too good at walking

[19:10] Calisto Encinal: Chris: What tutorials did you use to get the skills?

[19:10] Sarah Kubo: gorgeous

[19:10] Sarah Kubo: Did you do this?

[19:10] misterchris Oxberger: its alright, when there are this many people it gets a little chaotic

[19:10] Desty Kenzo: Isn't this amazing

[19:10] Ann Enigma: This garden is based on one that we visited in Rabat.

[19:10] Bjornson Donaldo: the best tutorial is to just practice yourself

[19:10] Calisto Encinal: Thanks, florenze

[19:10] Sarah Kubo: I think this is my new favorite place

[19:10] Sarah Kubo: can one teleport here straight?

[19:10] Ann Enigma: Thanks. :)

[19:10] florenze Kerensky: enjoy calisto :)

[19:10] Ann Enigma: Yes!

[19:10] misterchris Oxberger: Right Bjorn, I just picked up SL and started teaching myself

[19:11] Corwin Carillon: wow!

[19:11] Calisto Encinal: Okay, I've done Ivory Tower.

[19:11] Sarah Kubo: The tutorials I've encountered are rather poor

[19:11] misterchris Oxberger: i would suggest learning by trial and error, SL has endless possibilitys

[19:11] Bjornson Donaldo: yes, that is unfortunate

[19:11] Corwin Carillon: wow to your skills and this garden

[19:11] Sarah Kubo: One even started by saying read to the end and had the first step at the end.

[19:11] Sarah Kubo: Makes my educators heart weep.

[19:11] florenze Kerensky: there are many classes held on different aspects of building if you search events

[19:11] Desty Kenzo: Klex in DC, Holden in NY, and Desty in RI .... not even mentioning the others from around the world, interracting simultaneously in SL

[19:11] Calisto Encinal: Ha!

[19:12] misterchris Oxberger: I learn better by hands-on rather then reading then doing

[19:12] Sarah Kubo: I love the beach-- will you add fish?

[19:12] Calisto Encinal: Have you seen any Latin America sims on this level?

[19:12] Bjornson Donaldo: there are fish..you must find them

[19:12] florenze Kerensky: yes, just was chatting with a friend from brazil

[19:12] misterchris Oxberger: we actually do have dolphins as well

[19:12] Ann Enigma: Calisto: I'd love to, but so far I haven't.

[19:12] Sarah Kubo: I find it more efficient to read first-- don't have much time.

[19:13] Klexaco Trotter: Dude, this thing will be beyond cool if they integrate voice

[19:13] Ann Enigma: Well, I'd like to thank everyone for coming!

[19:13] Sarah Kubo: Dolphins! wow

[19:13] florenze Kerensky applauds

[19:13] misterchris Oxberger: right thats the only downfall to handson it takes a lot more time

[19:13] Bjornson Donaldo: they have ingtergrated voice

[19:13] Calisto Encinal: Ann: You mentioned you had a group going to Mexico. Will they be doing this?

[19:13] Sean McDunnough: /clap

[19:13] Sarah Kubo: Where do I find them?

[19:13] Holden Brockholst: No. Just watching, but then I am not planning on going anywhere...

[19:13] Ann Enigma: You are welcome to visit anytime.

[19:13] Sarah Kubo: the dolphins

[19:13] Corwin Carillon: And I think we'd all like to thank Ann. Desty and all the virtual moroccans!

[19:13] Corwin Carillon: great tour!

[19:13] florenze Kerensky: is it possible to hold and event here?

[19:13] Sarah Kubo: Thanks An, Desty, and all the students.

[19:13] Ann Enigma: Calisto: So far, our Mexico program is focused on manual labor, not SL. But we are looking at expanding it in the near future.

[19:13] misterchris Oxberger: thanks for coming im glas you like it

[19:13] Corwin Carillon: ty all

[19:13] Bjornson Donaldo: thanks very much, i am glad you all liked the build

[19:13] Scarlett Qi: Yes thank you!

[19:13] Calisto Encinal: Muchas gracias!

[19:14] misterchris Oxberger: ede nada

[19:14] misterchris Oxberger: de nada *

[19:14] Moroccan Tip Jar: Kim Chihuly donated $20

[19:14] Desty Kenzo: You are very welcome Corwin, thank you for setting this up

[19:14] Corwin Carillon: ty everyone for coming

[19:14] Rik Riel: Sorry I came late

[19:14] Corwin Carillon: the next buzz will be in Jan 07!

[19:14] Corwin Carillon: after the new year

[19:14] Calisto Encinal: ¡Qué bien!

[19:15] Ann Enigma: We are talking with the Ministry of Tourism, but no, it's not financial backed by them.

[19:15] misterchris Oxberger: we did present this to them however there are no financials from any outside groups involved

[19:15] Desty Kenzo: Holden, does the lamp look familiar ? :)

[19:15] Rik Riel: oh cool

[19:15] Holden Brockholst: Yes, it does...

[19:15] Rik Riel: It's a great 3D postcard for Morocco for sure

[19:15] Holden Brockholst: Starbucks, right ;-)

[19:15] Ann Enigma: That's our hope. :)

[19:16] Calisto Encinal: This is a great example of what a sim could be. Great for showing those that still don´t get it.

[19:16] Desty Kenzo: LoL .... they should be our next customer .... populate SL with starbucks :)

[19:16] Rik Riel: I have a HUD with other Real World places in SL.

[19:16] Rik Riel: I will be sure and add this

[19:17] Holden Brockholst: Wouldn't work, can't charge $4 for a venti capuccino...

[19:17] Ann Enigma: I'll be happy to talk with anyone about the project later on, or to make those tools available.

[19:17] Ann Enigma: Rik: Cool!

[19:17] Sarah Kubo: So where do you get the Moroccan outfit?

[19:17] misterchris Oxberger: using the photos as guides as well as textures

[19:18] Desty Kenzo: Did I mention that Klex is Dr. Rogowski's friend

[19:18] Rik Riel: this definitely has potential to compete with Dublin and Amsterdam for immersiveness and sense of place

[19:18] Holden Brockholst: Hi, Klex.

[19:18] Klexaco Trotter: hi holden

[19:18] Holden Brockholst: How is Robert?

[19:18] Klexaco Trotter: u know bob?

[19:18] Rik Riel: indeed

[19:18] Sarah Kubo: Most places are

[19:18] misterchris Oxberger: I agree Rik - we're hoping it attracts alot of attentions like those two places u mentioned

[19:19] Klexaco Trotter: i haven't seen him for about a month

[19:19] Rik Riel: Who should I give the HUD to when I update it?
