[17:04] CDB Barkley: Welcome everyone to this weeks NMC teachers Buzz-- many of you have been before

[17:04] CDB Barkley: do we have anyone new?

[17:04] Enjay Ellison: me

[17:04] CDB Barkley: Great!

[17:04] CDB Barkley: we've been meeting every other week

[17:05] Jane Irwin: I was here once before very briefly.

[17:05] Chris Steinhardt: I have been to one other meeting.

[17:05] CDB Barkley: for anyone currenty teaching or interested in teaching in SL

[17:05] coarsesalt Warrigal is Online

[17:05] CDB Barkley: Usually it is pretty informal

[17:05] CDB Barkley: But we've had some great discussions

[17:05] Enjay Ellison: I've read transcripts, they've been great

[17:06] Chris Steinhardt: How do we get the transcripts?

[17:06] CDB Barkley: Tonight, I thought we'd focus some on the themes of our current Symposium on Impact of digital media

[17:06] CDB Barkley: if you click the sign behind me, you'll see the event page

[17:06] CDB Barkley: Between Oct 10 and 21, we have had events every day

[17:06] CDB Barkley: or special featured videos

[17:06] ScubaChris Wollongong is Online

[17:06] CDB Barkley: All of this is ramping up to our "traditional" online conference Oct 24-25

[17:07] CDB Barkley: in what we call the "flat web" ;-)

[17:07] Larry Pixel: Funny to refer to that as "traditional" now....

[17:07] totally Vavoom: so you culminate this and begin that with Howard Rheingold, way cool!

[17:07] Larry Pixel: it was so new just recently

[17:07] Larry Pixel: yes, that is the tie

[17:07] CDB Barkley: I think Larry also wanted to talk about the Campus expansion too

[17:07] CDB Barkley: If you click the green sign behind larry

[17:07] Larry Pixel: Just a little, and answer questions

[17:07] CDB Barkley: there is a wiki set of discussion questions

[17:08] totally Vavoom: which may not be behind larry where you are seated ;-)

[17:08] Kevin Galbraith: heh

[17:08] Larry Pixel: lol

[17:08] CDB Barkley: ... this is all feeding our part in a MacArthur Foundation project that is developing a series of 6 volumes on digital media

[17:08] CDB Barkley: by leading academics...

[17:08] CDB Barkley: ...and we are using these new forms of communciation to provide input to the authors

[17:09] totally Vavoom: hi lyr!!

[17:09] Lyr Lobo: hello *grins*

[17:09] CDB Barkley: Hy Lyr!

[17:09] Coffee Mug whispers: Ahh! Fresh Hot Coffee

[17:09] CDB Barkley: So has anyone been to any of the events this week?

[17:09] Troy McLuhan: Yes

[17:09] Lyr Lobo: yes

[17:09] CDB Barkley: we're not fishing for praise ;-)

[17:10] Enjay Ellison: yes

[17:10] totally Vavoom: some

[17:10] CDB Barkley: more to share what's been going on for you during these events

[17:10] CDB Barkley: We have a great discussion tomorrow at noon

[17:10] CDB Barkley: provided by the SLED group

[17:10] Heidi TeeCee is Online

[17:11] Jane Irwin: thank you

[17:11] CDB Barkley: on the "legitimacy" of teaching in SL, you know fighting the battles with admin, getting support for "playing games"

[17:11] Lyr Lobo nods

[17:11] CDB Barkley: So the big topics have been... Identity and self image

[17:11] Troy McLuhan: Sounds like an interesting discussion!

[17:12] totally Vavoom: oooh yes!

[17:12] CDB Barkley: lots of relevant stuff thhere given avatars and such

[17:12] CDB Barkley: we are having a fashion show thursday ;-)

[17:12] totally Vavoom: now that I want to see ;-)

[17:12] Larry Pixel: Our biweekly education-focused discussion group is meeting over by the NMC flag on the SW corner of the campus...please join us if you'd like!

[17:13] CDB Barkley: Any thoughts on identy issues you have come up against?

[17:13] Larry Pixel: Well there are certainly some interesting fantasy groups in SL.

[17:14] Larry Pixel: Some are a little edugy for me, but they have fairly large followings

[17:14] CDB Barkley: People keep making "furry" innuendos ;-)

[17:14] Larry Pixel: Many of these involve complex alter-ego constructons

[17:14] Larry Pixel: I was thinking of the Gorians actually

[17:14] Enjay Ellison: I have 2 avs, this one and a male elf; I have been interested by the way the form defines behaviour and activities

[17:14] CDB Barkley: Interesting....

[17:14] Larry Pixel: How many of us have more than one av?

[17:14] totally Vavoom: a student in my class felt that the business aspect of Sl was blurring it's original appeal of being anybody or any being

[17:15] Larry Pixel: I ahve two

[17:15] CDB Barkley: Explain, totally

[17:15] Ninmah Ash is Online

[17:15] totally Vavoom: I want to know why you'd ahve more than one

[17:15] CDB Barkley: You mean the economic underpinning?

[17:15] Larry Pixel: I have more than one so I can just play sometimes

[17:15] Larry Pixel: and not be Larry Pixel

[17:16] totally Vavoom: well, we were talking about Toyota and other companies publicizing their products in Sl, and he felt that it could force people to stay "human" if you will

[17:16] Enjay Ellison: there are more reasons than this, but one is for play, one for professional purposes; I'm not sure I actually need both but it seemed sensible at the time

[17:16] Larry Pixel: intreresting thought

[17:16] Larry Pixel: hey Ninmah!

[17:16] CDB Barkley: So do you think you can 100% pass as a cross gender avatar?

[17:16] totally Vavoom: yeah, the whole notion of buying apparel in SL and getting a discuount to buy that same piece in RL

[17:16] totally Vavoom: Hey ninmah!

[17:16] Larry Pixel: hehe

[17:16] Ninmah Ash: hi everyone! mind if I crash your party for a few minutes? :-)

[17:17] CDB Barkley: Are there even chat conversation cues that give you away?

[17:17] totally Vavoom: crash away!

[17:17] totally Vavoom: good to see you :-)

[17:17] Lyr Lobo: welcome *smiles*

[17:17] Ninmah Ash: thanks

[17:17] Lyr Lobo: yes, CDB, there are

[17:17] Janor Slichter: I have a female avatar, and definitely passed ;)

[17:17] Enjay Ellison: <g> it has been very interesting! I am female in RL; no one seems to have questioned the male av. Those I know well know I am not male.

[17:17] coarsesalt Warrigal is Offline

[17:18] Larry Pixel: I think over time, yes, you'd be able to notice, but the cues are all blurred here

[17:18] Enjay Ellison: Those who don't accept him at face value

[17:18] totally Vavoom: interesting enjay

[17:18] Lyr Lobo: Hmm, some females I can tell are male...it is by their conversation and how they refer to other females, though *grins*

[17:18] Enjay Ellison: when you hang out with fairies and orcs and whatnot, it all seems less relevent in some ways

[17:18] CDB Barkley: The gender part is interesting- I am curious about the what makes one person want an avatar as a copy of themeslves versus a complete difference

[17:18] Lyr Lobo chuckles and nods

[17:18] totally Vavoom: question is, why would we want to switch genders or even be some other kind of being, is it simply to explore other identities?

[17:18] Enjay Ellison: though people do seem disturbed by people who change gender without changing avs

[17:18] Janor Slichter: personality exploration

[17:18] totally Vavoom: CDB, stop reading my mind!!! ;-)

[17:18] CDB Barkley: Cannot do so easy in RL

[17:19] Ninmah Ash: I know some men who prefer female avatars simply because they are looking at them all the time, and they want what they see to be attractive to themselves

[17:19] Lyr Lobo: I am someone totally different in 10 MMORPGs...here, I prefer being more like my dream self

[17:19] Janor Slichter: I noticed my chat change in my male av after some time in my female av

[17:19] Enjay Ellison: In my case, I was entering an unfamiliar space and being male seemed safer in some ways; I assumed I would be less likely to be hit on. This turned out to be true.

[17:19] totally Vavoom: i can vouch for that ;-)

[17:19] Enjay Ellison: I was also curious to see if it would change my experience.

[17:19] CDB Barkley: Yo Johnny!

[17:20] Ninmah Ash: hiya Johnny

[17:20] CDB Barkley: Right/apple click on an empty seat

[17:20] Johnny99 Gumshoe: hi all

[17:20] Ariel Surya: Enjay--how can you tell if it did change your experience?

[17:20] totally Vavoom: hi johnny!

[17:20] Isa Goodman: Hey Johnny

[17:20] CDB Barkley: Did anyone catch Johnny's music the other night?

[17:20] Enjay Ellison: well, as soon as I started a female av I got hit on--lol

[17:20] Ariel Surya: As a female, others seem kind and helpful to me...but is it environ or my gender?

[17:21] CDB Barkley: Females get more clothe choices

[17:21] totally Vavoom: so did I :-)

[17:21] Johnny99 Gumshoe: hey all, thanks for having me

[17:21] Ninmah Ash: Well, some of the "choices" are not what some females would choose...

[17:21] CDB Barkley: true

[17:21] Larry Pixel: Well of course -- you have a hot av, Enjay! ;)

[17:21] totally Vavoom: /laughs

[17:21] Larry Pixel: lol

[17:21] Lyr Lobo grins

[17:21] Johnny99 Gumshoe: has anyone reand enders game by orson scott card?

[17:21] totally Vavoom: yeah, but i got hit on by my basic avie!

[17:22] totally Vavoom: so is it just the fact that I was femaile?

[17:22] Enjay Ellison: I have also had males treat me like "one of the boys" in a way I often don't get treated in RL; it's subtle but I think it's there. A more relaxed interaction.

[17:22] Ariel Surya: Candice Steinkuehler (sp?) says men as women always choose larger breasts ;)

[17:22] Johnny99 Gumshoe: they use an open ended fantasy game to read the psychology of the children they are training as soldiers

[17:22] Enjay Ellison: I think being female and cute helps

[17:22] Enjay Ellison: lol Larry

[17:22] totally Vavoom: but that is true in RL as well, so is it simply a carry over from RL ?

[17:22] Ariel Surya: As a teacher, I'm curious about how I'll feel knowing my students aren't 'themselves'.

[17:22] Ninmah Ash: I have found it interesting that in the MMO I play, most men assume I am male even though I have a female avatar.

[17:23] Larry Pixel: I find that avs seem to evolve the longe ron is in here

[17:23] Johnny99 Gumshoe: SL reminds me of that, give someone an open world and they gravitate to exploratin of their own psyches

[17:23] Larry Pixel: longer one is in here

[17:23] Larry Pixel: so that it is pretty easy to tell how old someone is just by their av

[17:23] Larry Pixel: people seem to experiement with looks

[17:23] Larry Pixel: and refine them over time

[17:23] Enjay Ellison: I talked to a woman recently who set up a very conservative, not hot av; she said there was a noticable difference in the number of people who approached her vs "hot" females

[17:23] Ninmah Ash: old in terms of how long they've been in SL... not RL age, though, right, Larry?

[17:23] CDB Barkley: There was one av we saw months ago, who went around with a photo of his RL face atached in front of his SL head

[17:23] Larry Pixel: more experienced residents often go for a custom av

[17:24] Larry Pixel: yes in SL age

[17:24] Ariel Surya: I sent my online class of 36 students to 2nd life last week. they say they spent hours playing with appearance.

[17:24] CDB Barkley: So there is currecny in evolvoing

[17:24] CDB Barkley: evolving...reputation points...

[17:24] Ninmah Ash: I did, too, Ariel, when I first got here. And I still don't feel "done"

[17:24] CDB Barkley: or is it natural progrssion?

[17:24] CDB Barkley: to differentiate one's self?

[17:24] Johnny99 Gumshoe: i feel like the appearance levers are kind of an early stage of play in SL

[17:24] totally Vavoom: i think it's a natural progression, after all, we do it in RL too

[17:25] Ninmah Ash: I'm curious -- how many of you are "done" playing with shape and skin on your av?

[17:25] Larry Pixel: My wife advised me on my av...how do yo ulike it?

[17:25] Enjay Ellison: what you look like is such a fundamental part of who you are; even if you see the av as kind of a character in a film it's still representing you

[17:25] totally Vavoom: he's fishing!!!

[17:25] Janor Slichter: done w/the shape, I tweak my tie dyes :)

[17:25] Johnny99 Gumshoe: i was done very quickly, within 2 or 3 weeks

[17:25] totally Vavoom: ;-)

[17:25] Larry Pixel: she made me shop for hair for weeks

[17:25] hondomac Dalgleish: do avatars evolve like people -? Do they age, mature?

[17:25] Isa Goodman: There must be some degree of experimenting with the tools as well... after all in the basic sense this is just another application

[17:25] Ariel Surya: It is much like RL. I hate to play with appearance there, sorta ignored it here. But I'd love to be a 'creature'/haven't figured out how.

[17:25] CDB Barkley: Very rarely tweak the shape

[17:25] totally Vavoom: i think i'm done with skin and shape, but not hair, yet

[17:25] CDB Barkley: swap out shirts and hats

[17:26] Enjay Ellison: tweaking for the male; may do more with this av still, she doesn't feel settled

[17:26] Heidi TeeCee: I'll never be done but I think that is true in real life for me too ... always growing and evolving

[17:26] Lyr Lobo: yes

[17:26] Larry Pixel: my av is growing in ability also

[17:26] Larry Pixel: for example, now I can pass out hugs

[17:26] Larry Pixel: I was not comfortable with that at first

[17:26] Ariel Surya: So, do you think about teaching in here, and how it will change to talk with all skinny/young/transgender students? ;)

[17:26] hondomac Dalgleish: so it is gaining "experience"?

[17:26] Isa Goodman: true Larry

[17:26] Johnny99 Gumshoe: i am still seeking some kind of post body embodiment.... why do we have to recreate the clunkiness of physical space here?

[17:27] Lyr Lobo: nonverbal interaction, such as hugging, doesn't have the same taboos that it might in the workplace

[17:27] Enjay Ellison: you don't--last week I met a glowing orb

[17:27] totally Vavoom: that's intersting because I'm a hugger in RL, and not being able to hug my friends here felt awksward

[17:27] Janor Slichter: I ran into a guy named Scrap Book, he was just a sphere!

[17:27] Johnny99 Gumshoe: sure, still physical tho

[17:27] Ariel Surya: Johnny99: I've seen spirit-like creatures moving about.

[17:27] Larry Pixel: you can buy a hug animation

[17:27] Lyr Lobo: here, it is more like speaking with sign language...everything is more expressive and safer as such

[17:27] Isa Goodman: Can get that Vavoom... same here

[17:27] Larry Pixel: it is very nice...asks permission

[17:27] hondomac Dalgleish: would any of this change if we had voice in SL?

[17:28] totally Vavoom: sigh, spend more money ;-)

[17:28] Ninmah Ash: I wonder about that, hondomac

[17:28] CDB Barkley: win the photo contest!

[17:28] Larry Pixel: feels amazingly good to be hugged in here for some reason

[17:28] Isa Goodman: *smile* it does

[17:28] Enjay Ellison: you could filter voice so it was genderless

[17:28] Ariel Surya: Hugged? huh?

[17:29] totally Vavoom: oh give Ariel a hug Larry ;-)

[17:29] Isa Goodman: lol

[17:29] CDB Barkley: Yes, show us!

[17:29] Enjay Ellison: hug animations are amazingly meaningful emotionally--it's actually rather odd

[17:29] Lyr Lobo: I find them to be very touching

[17:29] totally Vavoom: are there types of hug animations?

[17:29] Ariel Surya: hey, you don't know that i'm not really a very ugly old man...

[17:29] hondomac Dalgleish: but even without gender wouldn't voice change the communication paradigm here in SL?

[17:29] Lyr Lobo: yes there are

[17:29] totally Vavoom: as in, the pat, pat, pat, not really touching hug

[17:29] Larry Pixel: Can't do it sitting down

[17:29] Lyr Lobo: some are longer...90 seconds...some are short...others have your leg up

[17:29] totally Vavoom: and the it's so good to see you bear hug

[17:29] Lyr Lobo: i wrote one that is short and friendly

[17:29] totally Vavoom: and all the ones in between ;-)

[17:29] Lyr Lobo: if anyone would like a copy

[17:29] Lyr Lobo: let me know

[17:30] CDB Barkley: yeah, we want hugs

[17:30] Larry Pixel: /hug ariel surya

[17:30] totally Vavoom: me lyr!! please :-0

[17:30] Isa Goodman: please Lyr

[17:30] Larry gives Ariel a big hug.

[17:30] Heidi TeeCee: me too

[17:30] Lyr Lobo: it attaches to your stomach, sits invis on your hip

[17:30] Ariel Surya: I have to try THAT hug with my in-laws! ;)

[17:30] Lyr Lobo: just wear it

[17:30] totally Vavoom: thanks Lyr!!

[17:30] CDB Barkley: Wow, I want Lyr's hair puff too

[17:31] Lyr Lobo: hehe

[17:31] Isa Goodman: thx Lyr

[17:31] Lyr Lobo: flexi with wind

[17:31] Lyr Lobo: and less gravity

[17:31] Lyr Lobo: that's my hair *laughs*

[17:31] totally Vavoom: lyr, how do I actually use the hug?

[17:31] Lyr Lobo: wear it

[17:31] totally Vavoom: I did

[17:31] CDB Barkley: Hmmm, other themes of our Symposium.. what are thoughs on Credibility and reliability of information here in SL?

[17:31] Lyr Lobo: /hug totally

[17:32] Lyr gives totally a big hug.

[17:32] Lyr Lobo: you have to stand to animate though

[17:32] ScubaChris Wollongong is Offline

[17:32] totally Vavoom: of course, that's ok, maybe when we leave, we'll all give each other hugs ;-)

[17:32] Lyr Lobo grins

[17:32] Janor Slichter: I find language to be more of an indicator of reliability than appearance

[17:32] totally Vavoom: but it's just /hug and the avie name right?

[17:32] Larry Pixel: sure

[17:32] CDB Barkley: might have to say "get a room"!

[17:32] Lyr Lobo: yes

[17:32] Larry Pixel: you have to own the hug device

[17:32] Lyr Lobo: when you wear it, it is supposed to tell you in the chat window

[17:32] Larry Pixel: no it is a frendly hug

[17:32] Ariel Surya: Credibility: I think we suspend, but then allow it to seep in thru behaviour and kindnesses?

[17:33] Lyr Lobo: so we will check it after the meeting

[17:33] CDB Barkley: Does personal crediility mean much here?

[17:33] Lyr Lobo: yes it does, CDB

[17:33] Ninmah Ash: I think it does, but it's built over time

[17:33] totally Vavoom: yes after the meeting

[17:33] Enjay Ellison: definitely

[17:33] Johnny99 Gumshoe: anyone worried that all this might be a distraction of mythic proportions?

[17:33] Ninmah Ash: which I suppose is true in RL too

[17:33] Janor Slichter: ppl don't listen as much when I'm chattin' w/abbrev's and contractions!

[17:33] Ariel Surya: distraction, Johnny99?

[17:33] Ninmah Ash: u no it Janor

[17:33] Larry Pixel: I am fascinated by how people wnat to know who each other is here in RL...so different form the rest of SL

[17:33] Larry Pixel: We in academia are so defined by our associations

[17:34] totally Vavoom: that is so true!

[17:34] Johnny99 Gumshoe: from real issues like bringing the population of the world to a HS education inthe next 20 years

[17:34] CDB Barkley: So will we have "associations" here? Are they groups?

[17:34] Larry Pixel: but is is fun to know who youare talkign to

[17:34] Ninmah Ash: I remember back in my MOOing days -- it was easier to assume someone was credible if s/he used complete sentences and correct spelling.

[17:34] Larry Pixel: allows new friendships to spill intop RL

[17:34] Ninmah Ash: Those people just came across as grown-up, or smart, or trustworthy.

[17:34] Johnny99 Gumshoe: i was struck last night at the library talk that we are so consumed by copyright and drm issues

[17:35] Ariel Surya: NMC is an association that creates certain understandings ...

[17:35] totally Vavoom: I think the reason we want to know is because we are already in a group Larry

[17:35] Larry Pixel: yes, I think that is why we are seeing a little community form here

[17:35] totally Vavoom: we are all associated with nmc in some way, and to some degree, I suppose we want to know waht the RL association is as well

[17:35] Johnny99 Gumshoe: big distraction for infomation tha is mostly obsolete

[17:35] Larry Pixel: it is a place where people of common interests cna gather and feel safe

[17:35] ScubaChris Wollongong is Online

[17:35] CDB Barkley: But as an organization, NMC is really connecting beyond its RL circles

[17:36] totally Vavoom: exactly, we know we won't be hit upon if we are cute or hot and female ;-)

[17:36] Ariel Surya: I actually like not knowing. Attention (for me) stays focused on ideas.

[17:36] Johnny99 Gumshoe: is there any reason we couldnt build a free high school equivalent education program on top of wikipedia in the next 5 years?

[17:36] CDB Barkley: jobs

[17:36] Ariel Surya: we could do it. but who'd value it?

[17:36] In Kenzo: Jobs CDB?

[17:36] totally Vavoom: and the credibility of the people teaching it would be an issue too i think

[17:37] CDB Barkley: I was being a smartty

[17:37] Chris Steinhardt: Free HS Wiki might need to be mediated by local mentor/tutors to be effective

[17:37] Johnny99 Gumshoe: we make it competency equivalent and transparent at the activity level

[17:37] Heidi TeeCee: yes, students still like the human element

[17:37] Johnny99 Gumshoe: self-paced

[17:37] In Kenzo: Remind me to thwack you later with my ruler!

[17:37] totally Vavoom: lol!

[17:37] CDB Barkley: Please do ;-)

[17:37] Ariel Surya: Why wouldn't the government pay for HS degree, if SL could certify?

[17:37] In Kenzo is Online

[17:37] Ninmah Ash: I think there's a sim for that ;-)

[17:38] Ariel Surya: I'd like to see SL offer a computer literacy certification.

[17:38] Ariel Surya: Free

[17:38] Troy McLuhan: There's the NETg courses on Thomson sim

[17:39] Johnny99 Gumshoe: has anyone seen an MIT $100 laptop?

[17:39] CDB Barkley: not in person

[17:39] Johnny99 Gumshoe: i wonder what it has for GPU

[17:39] Troy McLuhan: in WIRED Magazine :)

[17:39] In Kenzo: only in orange pictures

[17:39] Ariel Surya: at a conference. MIT guy brought onstage

[17:39] Johnny99 Gumshoe: cool

[17:39] In Kenzo: closer to $140 still?

[17:39] CDB Barkley: A lot of attention on the device....

[17:39] Johnny99 Gumshoe: right

[17:40] Ariel Surya: love the crank. wish my crummy mac laptop had one.

[17:40] CDB Barkley: ... learning is the process

[17:40] In Kenzo: have a different design but it's still too early. i'm excited to see that SL can travel with remote devices like the MojoPac

[17:40] CDB Barkley: What is MojoPac?

[17:40] totally Vavoom: the coolest thing in a while!

[17:41] Heidi TeeCee: what is it?

[17:41] totally Vavoom: It's essentially your hard drive in a portable format, in simplistic terms

[17:41] hondomac Dalgleish: and that has been one of the advantages I've seen in SL - each learner can engage their own process - not restricted by a classroom or faculty approach

[17:41] Janor Slichter: USB device

[17:41] In Kenzo: Post on SLED today - way to demo from a remote device, USB2

[17:41] CDB Barkley: Ahh, portable SL?

[17:41] Johnny99 Gumshoe: do you ever worry that there are world changing paradigms happening that we're not aware of for whatever reason, and one day we will wake up and it will be too late?

[17:41] Enjay Ellison: frequently

[17:41] Ninmah Ash: all the time

[17:41] CDB Barkley: just now

[17:41] Johnny99 Gumshoe: me too

[17:41] In Kenzo: do the best we can to connect and engage johnny...

[17:42] totally Vavoom: no just SL CDB, essentially your computer profile, settings and any app

[17:42] CDB Barkley: ahhhhhh

[17:42] Johnny99 Gumshoe: i notice at work that people who surf the web and read email may just stay there, never growing beyond their original experience

[17:43] In Kenzo: lack of interactive programming that engages action beyond computer?

[17:43] Ninmah Ash: speaking of interactive... my family just came home. Have fun guys! great discussion

[17:43] CDB Barkley: By Ninmah!

[17:43] Heidi TeeCee: bye Ninmah

[17:43] Isa Goodman: cu

[17:43] Johnny99 Gumshoe: always navigating invented windows and folders, not realizing that desktop search means you only need a word linked to your target to locate things

[17:44] Ninmah Ash: bye all

[17:44] Larry Pixel: bye !!

[17:44] Larry Pixel: Say hi to David!

[17:44] Johnny99 Gumshoe: cya

[17:44] totally Vavoom: bye ninmah!

[17:44] In Kenzo: Most of us need someone to show us those tools.

[17:44] Enjay Ellison: by!

[17:44] Ninmah Ash is Offline

[17:44] Isa Goodman: afk

[17:44] Lyr Lobo smiles

[17:44] Larry Pixel: SL is one of those paradigm shifters I think

[17:44] Johnny99 Gumshoe: i think so too

[17:44] Lyr Lobo: yes, it is

[17:44] Troy McLuhan: I have to run - another meeting. Cheers

[17:44] totally Vavoom: somebody mentioned computer literacty, but to some degree, i think we also need technology literacy

[17:44] Larry Pixel: I have begun to see it as a social networkign space more than a game

[17:44] CDB Barkley: It's still a fairly small segment of computer users

[17:45] Larry Pixel: a sort of My 3D psace

[17:45] Johnny99 Gumshoe is Online

[17:45] Isa Goodman: bak

[17:45] Enjay Ellison: but the world has Taken Notice; I've seen a lot of editorial attention lately

[17:45] In Kenzo: if over 1 billion have internet access and 10,000 are here at any given time....yes, quite a small segment.

[17:45] totally Vavoom: well, it would be a lot easier if someone did show us the tools :-)

[17:45] Enjay Ellison: which may be good and may be bad

[17:45] Larry Pixel: yes, but the potential is huge in here, I think all us woud agree

[17:46] Larry Pixel: we're early adopters and like that

[17:46] In Kenzo: I wonder about digital access in remote areas...

[17:46] Enjay Ellison: Did you all catch that Reuters has moved in?

[17:46] totally Vavoom: yup

[17:46] In Kenzo: perpetuating digital divides?

[17:46] Janor Slichter: yes, very cool!

[17:46] hondomac Dalgleish: I did - cool site

[17:46] CDB Barkley: Next thing it will be Fox News

[17:46] In Kenzo: gorgeous reuters build.

[17:46] totally Vavoom: and that's my concern, the digital divide

[17:46] Larry Pixel: who built it?

[17:47] In Kenzo: I had two media clients call this week, I'm sure many are trying to figure out how to hop in.

[17:47] In Kenzo: Electric Sheep

[17:47] Johnny99 Gumshoe: if there is a digital divide with the flat web, doesn't SL represent a monster chasm?

[17:47] In Kenzo: Barnesworth Anubis buildings

[17:47] Larry Pixel: they do nice work

[17:47] In Kenzo: monster chasm or opportunity....

[17:47] In Kenzo: i think your educational ideas here have serious potential to change that.

[17:47] Larry Pixel: Barnes is amazing

[17:47] CDB Barkley: Larry, care to talk about the expansion here?

[17:47] CDB Barkley: (cue)

[17:48] totally Vavoom: yes, but are we talking of a global digital divide, or a US digital divide

[17:48] Larry Pixel: Sure...I have just a minute or tow before I have to go

[17:48] CDB Barkley: there will always be a divide

[17:48] Larry Pixel: we have info on the expansion online at http://www.nmc.org/campus/NMC_Campus_Phase_II_Expansion_Project

[17:48] CDB Barkley: moving targets

[17:48] totally Vavoom: fill us in Larry

[17:48] In Kenzo: i saw new lands brewing!

[17:48] Larry Pixel: essentially we are adding a film/theater arts complex and a life sciences complex

[17:49] Johnny99 Gumshoe: when can we all work here?

[17:49] Larry Pixel: we have added 6 sims to the island

[17:49] Johnny99 Gumshoe: and quit our day jobs?

[17:49] In Kenzo: wow

[17:49] hondomac Dalgleish: What about the rumours of the US Congress looking at taxing SL? What impaxt might that have here?

[17:49] Larry Pixel: our new buildings will have "holodecks" so that anyone can design a cutom interior for them

[17:49] In Kenzo: Linden Labs will buy a boat and go to international waters ;-)

[17:49] Johnny99 Gumshoe: where di u hear that? they dont even tax the internet yet

[17:50] Janor Slichter: they're looking into it, though, Congress is

[17:50] Lyr Lobo chcukles

[17:50] Larry Pixel: For example, in the first iteration of the machinima school, we plan a black box theather in the holodeck, andthe ability to switch between seven stage desighns

[17:50] Lyr Lobo: nice

[17:50] totally Vavoom: whoo hoo!

[17:50] hondomac Dalgleish: Reuters reported that some one in the US Congress has realized that ther are a lot of real US dollars floating around in here and WoW - and that they should be taxed

[17:50] Larry Pixel: In the life sciences, we plan a trauma center and a patient intake center -- both holodeck builds

[17:51] In Kenzo: very cool stage idea. what do you mean by holodeck, easy to switch out by a control?

[17:51] Larry Pixel: we'llpublish the specs on how to build for the holodeck and allow anyone to add content to them'

[17:51] Larry Pixel: yes, there will be an easy control

[17:51] Johnny99 Gumshoe: if you realize profit in USD here, you should claim it on your taxes

[17:51] Larry Pixel: menu driven

[17:51] Larry Pixel: We plan much more outdoor space

[17:51] Larry Pixel: and two new amphitheatres

[17:51] Heidi TeeCee: Larry ... are you still planning on the biosphere?

[17:51] Larry Pixel: the webiste contians the 15 page RFP with lots and lots of detials

[17:52] totally Vavoom: i was telling a faculty member in drama today about Sl, and how he could teach set design more interactively here!

[17:52] Larry Pixel: yes, the life sciences center will have a realistic biosphere as part of it

[17:52] Larry Pixel: and a marine area

[17:52] Larry Pixel: we also plan extensive learnign content to be built in.

[17:52] totally Vavoom: ok, when do we quit our day jobs and come work here as someone said ;-)

[17:52] In Kenzo: totally, my partner does sets in Hollywood and we love it for that use.

[17:52] CDB Barkley: pay is in $lindens

[17:53] totally Vavoom: sticks her tongue out at CSB

[17:53] totally Vavoom: CDB

[17:53] CDB Barkley: Teaching lighting too

[17:53] Larry Pixel: For example, Troy has given us a "molecule" rezzer that will allow us to creat a 3-D copy of any molecule in the Biochem database oh thousands

[17:53] CDB Barkley: whew!

[17:53] Isa Goodman: Sweet Larry

[17:53] totally Vavoom: yes, oh the possibilities!

[17:53] Larry Pixel: we plan to have organic molecules where we have art on this sim up there'

[17:53] Johnny99 Gumshoe: whoa, now that is way cool

[17:53] hondomac Dalgleish: the real power of this place

[17:54] Johnny99 Gumshoe: is there a demo yet?

[17:54] Larry Pixel: We used the math lessons that we have on top of the welcome center as a prototype for embedded learing

[17:54] In Kenzo: bring all of the elements to life!

[17:54] Larry Pixel: and we are looking for similar ideas for othe rfields

[17:54] In Kenzo: the art is beautiful here.

[17:54] Larry Pixel: ther is a model on NMC Campus 2

[17:54] Larry Pixel: the terra forming begins tomorrow, and we plan to be finished in 8 weks'

[17:54] Larry Pixel: weeks

[17:54] totally Vavoom: in kenzo, so do you design sets here and then transpose it to RL?

[17:54] Johnny99 Gumshoe: i would like to implement 3D infoviz from web sources

[17:54] CDB Barkley: I want to build some real geologic structures in the mountains

[17:55] Heidi TeeCee: I think what will make it different than other places in SL will be the educational focus

[17:55] Johnny99 Gumshoe: great place to do text mining

[17:55] totally Vavoom: johnny, infovizz??

[17:55] Larry Pixel: Yes and this group can help us a LOT with that

[17:55] In Kenzo: we play and storyboard here totally while we draw RL in the studio. we produce machinima and stream it back for RL shows and presentations.

[17:55] CDB Barkley: Well, we still still have dancing ;-)

[17:55] Johnny99 Gumshoe: text analysis piped into 3D visualizations

[17:55] totally Vavoom: way cool, in kenzo

[17:55] Johnny99 Gumshoe: check out www.visualthesarus.com to get a feel for it

[17:55] Larry Pixel: yes, and grat potential for case studies using the holodecks

[17:56] CDB Barkley: Can we geta a demo sometme , In Kenzo?

[17:56] Larry Pixel: yes olease!!

[17:56] In Kenzo: Come by my home....

[17:56] Larry Pixel: pleae!!

[17:56] In Kenzo: We start Harvest Fest on 10/20

[17:56] CDB Barkley: Ok, we'll work on a field trip

[17:56] Heidi TeeCee: yes, and "discovery" areas

[17:56] totally Vavoom: Sl home right?

[17:56] In Kenzo: ManorMeta, IM me for a TP anytime.

[17:56] In Kenzo: yes, SL home.

[17:56] In Kenzo: or RL home in LA is fine too, our studio is housed in a very open arts community

[17:56] Larry Pixel: So I encourage you to visit the site her it is again

[17:56] Larry Pixel: http://www.nmc.org/campus/NMC_Campus_Phase_II_Expansion_Project

[17:57] In Kenzo: we have a community room and small theatre for RL/SL mirror events.

[17:57] Heidi TeeCee: places where students can interact with the environment similar to a scientist out in the field

[17:57] totally Vavoom: Oh now I know why you sounded so familair, the TechSoup article!!!

[17:57] Larry Pixel: I have to run soon -- any comments or questions about the expansion?

[17:57] totally Vavoom: can't wait to se it Larry!

[17:57] Larry Pixel: oo that wa a show stopper eh?

[17:57] Johnny99 Gumshoe: when will the sims come online?

[17:57] Larry Pixel: the sims are online now.

[17:57] totally Vavoom: and hopefully, nudge, cajole some faculty to use it!

[17:57] In Kenzo eeps.

[17:57] Larry Pixel: they are all around us

[17:57] Larry Pixel: see your map

[17:57] Johnny99 Gumshoe: is there a builder role we can join?

[17:58] In Kenzo gave you ManorMeta, Better World (174, 186, 24).

[17:58] Larry Pixel: I'd be most interested in any ideas related to that

[17:58] Johnny99 Gumshoe: or a flow for proposals and such?

[17:58] Larry Pixel: especially as it relates to holodeck content

[17:58] Larry Pixel: IVM is doing the major work..they did Infinite Mind

[17:58] hondomac Dalgleish: night all thanks for another great Buzz

[17:58] Lyr Lobo: have fun *waves*

[17:58] CDB Barkley: Thanks! We are wrappig up soon
