Corwin Carillon: Welcome everyone! and my thanks to Jatt for agreeing to do this 2nd session on millennials!

Aidenn Brooks: Does anyone mind if I take a pic of our group?
Angela Nicholls: /clp
Corwin Carillon: sure
Jatt Writer: Good idea
Dayna Wycliffe: Fine with me
Cyndi Uriza: fine here
Jatt Writer: HI Linc
Aidenn Brooks: thanks
Angela Nicholls: shoot ;-)
Linc Kappler: hi, jatt
Corwin Carillon: hi Linc
Kim Chihuly has indicated consent to be recorded.
Linc Kappler: hi, Corwin :
Jatt Writer: Welcome everyone
Corwin Carillon: so for those just arrived can you click the bklack recorder in the middle if you are ok with the transcript being recorded
Dayna Wycliffe has indicated consent to be recorded.
Corwin Carillon: Jatt, over to you :)
Birdie Newcomb: OK, did that
Jatt Writer: OK, Did we want to give everyone the first notecard?
Linc Kappler has indicated consent to be recorded.
Corwin Carillon: sure ... one sec
Jatt Writer: Corwin will give you a notecard with the seven traits of Millennial Learners
Birdie Newcomb: Sounds like a book title
Corwin Carillon: the notecard is in the white box across from me .. please click it to get a notecard
Jatt Writer: Last time we talked about the 21st Century Learning Skills characteristics: just in time learning, multi modal, use of image, global, collaborative peer grouping, etc.
Birdie Newcomb: White box?
Jatt Writer: This time to begin, as you read through the traits, can you identify with any of them such as: parents as partners, equality and respect, standards are ok, lifelong knowledge cosumers, embracing challenge?
Jatt Writer: It is a large white box, and says Millennials 1
Birdie Newcomb: OK, got it
Kim Chihuly: I can identify with the team instincts!
Angela Nicholls: and the social networking
Jatt Writer: yes, very present
Jatt Writer: yes, social using technology
Kim Chihuly: tho I sure haven't seen the math and science focus (unfortunately)
Jatt Writer: several technologies at once
Jatt Writer: I hadn't seen the math and science but do more now
Corwin Carillon: Hi CDB
Jatt Writer: What about how they want to be judged on what they do on the outside
Angela Nicholls: wanting to be challenged, I see that a lot and glad for it
Jatt Writer: under the last trait of achieving
Aidenn Brooks: Hello CBD
Birdie Newcomb: This doesn't sound like all kids
Jatt Writer: Angela I am glad too
Jatt Writer: With all generation these are prevailing traits
Jatt Writer: not a rule
Kim Chihuly: not sure what you mean by "the outside" - out of class?
Jatt Writer: outside recognition, so others can see, physical trophy
Corwin Carillon: doesn't sound like kids in Hong Kong except maybe for team
Birdie Newcomb: What age range are we talkoing about?
Jatt Writer: I would say secondary and college
Kim Chihuly: ahh - thanks Jatt - that makes more sense
Jatt Writer: However as a note to each of you this dialogue is around teh book Millennials Go To College by Howe and STraus
Birdie Newcomb: Do they call themselves that?
Jatt Writer: Yes
Jatt Writer: Sometime GEN Y
Birdie Newcomb: I suppose Age of Aquarius is too yesterday for them
Angela Nicholls: yes, they identify with Gen Y and the Millennials at my campus
Jatt Writer: lol Birdie
Jatt Writer: and actually I think that is a good segway into the next part of the discussion
Jatt Writer: corwin, could we get card 2
Corwin Carillon: sorry lag
Birdie Newcomb: Are they job-oriented, or academic?
Corwin Carillon: should be there now
Jatt Writer: In 2010 Gen_x parents are going to be entering the campuses with their children, your students
CDB Barkley has indicated consent to be recorded.
Jatt Writer: I have listed some disucssion points around how the Gen X Stealth fighter parents will be different than the Boomer parents
Corwin Carillon: click on the Millennials 2 box if you haven't already
Jatt Writer: Take a look and think about how dealing with these even stronger willed parents will impact teaching the students
Jatt Writer: Campus Administration are going to have to make some adjustments
Jatt Writer: A good example is that the Gen X parents are the ipod babies. Why buy an entire album when you can just get the one song you want
Birdie Newcomb: Campus as fortress?
Jatt Writer: They will have to be given a pretty good "package" in order to by into a schools offering
Kim Chihuly: colleges are going to have to start collecting (and making public) a lot of new kinds of data - admin will hate that
Birdie Newcomb: Do we need classes for parents?
Birdie Newcomb: Orientationi?
Jatt Writer: yes and yes
Jatt Writer: Definitely orientation
CDB Barkley: Parents likely dont think they need classes
Birdie Newcomb: But they still pay the bills.
Jatt Writer: and the colleg will have to have a very structed set of guidelines at to where the parents can be involved and where they cannot
Kim Chihuly: orientation could be part of the transparency couldn't it (tho we could use it to manage expectations too)
Jatt Writer: They will be very agressive about wanting the data to substantiate andy claims
Angela Nicholls: True, and what about FERPA laws - currently in Texas we can not discuss the students grades or work without the student's permission
Corwin Carillon: how much is this a reality or a characture?
Angela Nicholls: even if they are minors
Corwin Carillon: sounds a bit extreme
Jatt Writer: One way to look at it for discussion is, how will you change to meet the needs of the stealth fighter paretns
Birdie Newcomb: Better radar?
Angela Nicholls: encourage them to talk to their kids!
Birdie Newcomb: Boundaries
Jatt Writer: they will be demanding
Birdie Newcomb: College, in my mind, is the way to step away from parents
Jatt Writer: very protective of their child
Jatt Writer: Can you put yourself in the students place for a moment
Jatt Writer: think of who the parents are and what they want for the child
Jatt Writer: think of what the college currently offers and
Aidenn Brooks: Presumably, the children will be demanding too.
Jatt Writer: think about what you want for these students
Birdie Newcomb: Which is not the same as what the student wants
Jatt Writer: What about classroom practices
Kim Chihuly: so we want to turn out well rounded students who know how to learn int he future - and they want to get a job?
Kim Chihuly: in the*
Cyndi Uriza has indicated consent to be recorded.
Jatt Writer: how will these students and partents resond to
Jatt Writer: classes not using the most current technologies
Jatt Writer: our university just spent million of dollars on a library to hold books
Jatt Writer: Do you think that is where any of the interest/skill of this generation will lie?
Birdie Newcomb: Books -- the last resort
Cyndi Uriza: books are still part of it, they just need the latest technolgy as well
Aidenn Brooks: Not the main focus, but my students very soon discover the ease of browsing for and inside books.
Cyndi Uriza: yes , some things are actually easier using books
Jatt Writer: Where is the first place you go is you wish to know something?
Birdie Newcomb: If you find the right book
Birdie Newcomb: Google
Jatt Writer: yes, and so do they
Jatt Writer: for a lot of their information
Cyndi Uriza: yes, I'm a libarain, so google is not my first choice
Jatt Writer: LIbraians will be key
Cyndi Uriza: but I have specialized knowledge about where to look
Cyndi Uriza: and I encourage studetns to think beyond a quick and dirty google search
Birdie Newcomb: IN SL, what do librarians do? Same as hep desk?
Jatt Writer: Well, there are some great sites
Birdie Newcomb: help
Kim Chihuly: guess we need to make sure our assignments (as profs) take more than a google search to complete
Aidenn Brooks: Yes - it's probably about directing the students to the right sites.
Cyndi Uriza: yes, help people access knowledge
Linc Kappler: we can have something like google in library in future for searching books
Jatt Writer: The libraians just had a conference here in Reno last fall. They have actually adopted 21st Cetory learning standards.
Cyndi Uriza: find what they really want , not just settle for the first Google page
Cyndi Uriza: yes, we have long had technolgy based standards
Birdie Newcomb: Oh, I'm feeling lucky 8=)
Jatt Writer: The guest speaker was Daniel Pink,, the author of a Whole New MInd
Angela Nicholls: lol Birdie
Jatt Writer: Which is about moving from left brain to right brain, to a whole mind
Cyndi Uriza: yes my district studies it last summer
Jatt Writer: go on
Cyndi Uriza: worthwhile
Birdie Newcomb: Thiknking to feeling?
Cyndi Uriza: combines Brain reseach with needs of the job market, 21st century skills, etc
Cyndi Uriza: need big picture thinkers, synthesizers
Cyndi Uriza: people who are willing to use all facets of intelligence
Birdie Newcomb: Do the parents want to hear that?
Cyndi Uriza: not limited to math, science, liner thinking
Cyndi Uriza: yes
Cyndi Uriza: most of them do
Birdie Newcomb: That's the unmeasurable area
Cyndi Uriza: they work, they know the work place is changing
Jatt Writer: Interestingly I handed out the info you have received to district parents
Cyndi Uriza: i'm in Detroit, lots of layed off parents with old style skills
Jatt Writer: they commented that those are their children and they are these parents
Jatt Writer: they know
Cyndi Uriza: yes, they want their children to prosper in the future
Jatt Writer: Another good book just for reference is "Don't Bother Me Mom I'm Learning, byt Marc Prensky
Birdie Newcomb: I know that one
Birdie Newcomb: Is that what we need to teach the parents?
Cyndi Uriza: me, too. good book, harder to sell to administrator, though
Jatt Writer: Birdie, that is a good lead in to another piece of the discussion
Jatt Writer: Corwin, could we get the third note
Aidenn Brooks: Jatt, what is the attitude of Millennials to the career beyond college?
Jatt Writer: please
Birdie Newcomb: I think that's what Prensky was about
Jatt Writer: They are very concerened
Corwin Carillon: 3rd note out
Jatt Writer: they want the "right" first job that will propel them to be as sucessful as possible.
Aidenn Brooks: ok
Corwin Carillon: behind Aidenn
Jatt Writer: One of the noes is that a student entering college has already spent 5-10 years planning their future
Jatt Writer: You have all been touching on this, "what should we do"
Birdie Newcomb: Tell me more about ystems thinking processes
Jatt Writer: Perhas some of these possiblities will generate some more discussiona nd ideas
Corwin Carillon: the 5-10 planning is definitely not the case in Hong Kong ... is this the case all over the US?
Jatt Writer: Systems the love of my life!
Jatt Writer: In part the is based on the work of Peter Senge
Jatt Writer: That what we benfit from most is connected to the whole
Jatt Writer: That if you are on one part of the spider web and something jiggles
Jatt Writer: the entire web moves
Jatt Writer: we are all effected by actions
Dayna Wycliffe: all parts related and dependent on each other to make the whole work
Jatt Writer: This is becoming even more relevant and important in education
Jatt Writer: as we become more global and the world smaller
Jatt Writer: we cannot hold out as a fortress as mentioned before
Jatt Writer: we have to enbrace all thoers, their knowledge, skils culture and ways
Aidenn Brooks: Very positive development.
Jatt Writer: Other thoughts?
Jatt Writer: Are you using project based learning
Kim Chihuly: in the notes, home curriculum? is that homework?
Aidenn Brooks: Yes, with some classes, not others.
Cyndi Uriza: we cannot expect students to sit quietly in their seats anymore
Kim Chihuly: yep - in most classes
Dayna Wycliffe: instructional design is systems based
Birdie Newcomb: Thankful that colleges are not boudn by NCLB
Jatt Writer: home curriculm refers to what students learn and use (tech) at home vs. what they learn at achool
Dayna Wycliffe: students definitely need to be action learners
Jatt Writer: that is right Dayna
Cyndi Uriza: I actually have my students doing stuff in Whyville which is actually giving them more sceince at home than at school
Jatt Writer: you are all generating some great comments
Cyndi Uriza: science
Birdie Newcomb: Well, it sounds like they're ready before we are
Jatt Writer: Nice Cyndi
Kim Chihuly: but we have to get them bto back up action with info, with some knowledge (read, a little lecture, learn the facts)
Kim Chihuly: cool cyndi!
Cyndi Uriza: info and action need to be integrated
Cyndi Uriza: just in time, what you need when you are using it info
Jatt Writer: There has been a lot of reseach plublished n the sucess of project based learning
Aidenn Brooks: Are there 'facts' anymore? Perhaps Millennials will be attuned the 'social construct' view of knowledge.
Birdie Newcomb: so well-rounded becoes multi-dimensional
Cyndi Uriza: there are "facts", but you find them not memeorize them
Kim Chihuly: sure there are facts - science facts, grammar facts, vocabulary, math facts - all building blocks
Jatt Writer: Yes, the days of sit and get aand spout facts are gone
Dayna Wycliffe: I think there are facts but lectures are not the most efficient way to present them
Jatt Writer: For example, parents are going to want to know good reson any child is being asked to write a term paper like some of us did
Aidenn Brooks: Perhaps project based learning is a way to discover 'facts' and build knowledge.
Angela Nicholls: interactive learning challenging them to create and come up with the answers
Corwin Carillon: project-based or inquiry/problem-based?
Cyndi Uriza: you still need your multiplication tables to figure out area to build things for example
Aidenn Brooks: Could be both.
Birdie Newcomb: depends on the course
Cyndi Uriza: maybe even student choice in thematter
Dayna Wycliffe: Exploring and hands-on activities will yield learning outcomes that will remain with students
Angela Nicholls: the process is the product!
Cyndi Uriza: offer multiple options for demonstrating learning
Corwin Carillon: I think that depends Dayna on the meaingfulness (as percieved by students) of the activities
Jatt Writer: Some of the 21st Century skills that students us in project based learning include
Jatt Writer: setting their own goals
Jatt Writer: owership and control over their learning
Jatt Writer: working cooperatively
Jatt Writer: critical thinkin
Jatt Writer: engagement in elarning
Birdie Newcomb: Learning with others
Jatt Writer: in depth investigation of real world problems
Jatt Writer: community culture
Jatt Writer: use of image
Jatt Writer: higher lever of thinking and problem solving
Jatt Writer: others you can think of?
Derrik Beck: flexible thinking
Jatt Writer: yes
Birdie Newcomb: initative
Jatt Writer: yes
Babette Vuckovic: Problem solving, synthesis
Jatt Writer: yes
Jatt Writer: Also
Birdie Newcomb: taking risks
Derrik Beck tries to think of something to make jatt say "no"
Derrik Beck: :-)
Jatt Writer: project based learning allows teachers to create tasks whose complexity and openess mimics the problems of the real world
Jatt Writer: Funny Derrik
Birdie Newcomb: or create simulations for a future world
Derrik Beck: ooh Birdie, yes
Birdie Newcomb: take ownership of their own learning
Cyndi Uriza: yes, that is so important
Cyndi Uriza: no top down dictatorship
Jatt Writer: One other piece
Jatt Writer: piece
Jatt Writer: what about assessment
Kim Chihuly: except they need to experience that top down dictatorship - they're going to have a boss, they need to know how to work wihtin rules too
Derrik Beck: it does become much more complex
Jatt Writer: How are we going to know if we are successful at teaching Millennials
Cyndi Uriza: but most work is more colaborative, rules, yes, but dictators, no
Kim Chihuly: assessment - we're getting hit with that in our program evaluation (middle states)
Kim Chihuly: cyndi - guess i had the last dictator boss<G>
Jatt Writer: Well, I can tell you there is no A LOT out there yet
Cyndi Uriza: i tell students stright up what benchmarks they need t meet
Jatt Writer: onassessment
Jatt Writer: Right now our state is adopting new technology standards
Cyndi Uriza: I have one, I just ignore him :-)
Birdie Newcomb: Thanks Jatt, I gotta go. Good discussion.
Jatt Writer: ok
CDB Barkley: Hey folks, just a heads up were are nearing the end of the hour, we can talk on and on...
CDB Barkley: but we ought to thanks Jatt for prepping this discussion
Jatt Writer: final comments anyone
Jatt Writer: observations
Dayna Wycliffe: Very interesting, thank you
Derrik Beck: thanks much Jatt
Cyndi Uriza: thank you
Kim Chihuly: thanks Jatt!
Angela Nicholls: excellent discussion, thanks Jatt!
Jatt Writer: One more thing
CDB Barkley: and form more of a lsitening mode, i am in 100% agrement with the sentiments here, though we are the choir
Aidenn Brooks: Great discussion - I've learned a lot.
CDB Barkley: so the hard part, and food for thought is...
Jatt Writer: We have developed an online professional development course on Millennial learners for our teachers
Jatt Writer: they get inservice credit
CDB Barkley: .. what do we do about addresing change?
Jatt Writer: I am going to give you the name of our contact person
Jatt Writer: in case you are interested in using a course to spread the workd about how Millennial students learn
Aidenn Brooks: Stay informed, is one thing I guess.
Cyndi Uriza: same as always, demonstrate the good and fight/ignore the bad
Jatt Writer: her email is ldoukas@washoe.k12.nv.us
Aidenn Brooks: Thanks.
Cyndi Uriza: be the smartest and best teacher in your building so you can push your boss and help your colegues
Angela Nicholls: That is great Jatt, thanks
Jatt Writer: Thank you all for your rich dialogue
Linc Kappler: thanks, jatt.
Jatt Writer: thank you all for your time
Jatt Writer: Anything else Cdb?
Aidenn Brooks: Thanks very much Jatt and everyone. Have to go to RL now. Bye!
Angela Nicholls: thanks again Jatt for sharing and encouraging us to think towards the Millennials!
Jatt Writer: ok
Jatt Writer: thank you all
CDB Barkley: Thanks to everyone for coming!
Linc Kappler: I got to go too. thanks for the discussion again.
Kim Chihuly: good discussion!
Derrik Beck: ooops
Cyndi Uriza: thanks everyone. great discussion.
Kim Chihuly: bye everybody - gotta go figure out how to work some of these 21st century skills into a discussion of excel pivot tables<G>
Jatt Writer: :)
Derrik Beck: good luck
CDB Barkley: he he its all in what you pivot
Kim Chihuly: good one cdb<G> - bye folks
Jatt Writer: thanks for being here CDB
CDB Barkley: thansk Jan
