[8:49] Will Nohkan: I teach public speaking. I have wondered what that would be like in SL.
[8:49] Heidi TeeCee: Hi everyone ....
[8:49] CDB Barkley: Hi Heidi!
[8:49] CDB Barkley: and everyone else
[8:49] Cubist Scarborough: Hi
[8:49] Will Nohkan: hello
[8:49] CDB Barkley: And thanks to Kisa for having us here
[8:50] Kisa Naumova: I just hope the sim holds up
[8:50] Kisa Naumova: She's a sturdy beast, is Steiger
[8:50] CDB Barkley: Let's see what she can do!
[8:51] Kisa Naumova: Oops. I can see a fair few of those happening
[8:53] Kisa Naumova: I'm having issues with the Flickr thing this afternoon
[8:53] Kisa Naumova: My students are hogging the bandwidth on my server
[8:53] Kisa Naumova: I'm just going to quickly test it again, if that's OK
[8:54] Kisa Naumova: Might go a little odd for a second
[8:56] Corwin Carillon: Hi Kisa
[8:57] Corwin Carillon: Cna you unlock the block so I can swivel it?
[8:57] Corwin Carillon: cool thx :)
[8:57] Kisa Naumova: Wheeeeee
[8:57] Corwin Carillon: heh
[8:57] CDB Barkley: Can I spin too?
[8:58] Kisa Naumova: Yeah, sorry about the seats - rather hastily knocked up the other day
[8:58] CDB Barkley: I like sitting in a block
[8:58] CDB Barkley: weeeee
[8:58] Corwin Carillon: hiya heidi!
[8:58] Heidi TeeCee: Hi Corwin!
[8:58] Corwin Carillon: Hey Cubist!
[8:59] Cubist Scarborough: Hi there
[8:59] CDB Barkley: Hello and welcome
[8:59] Kisa Naumova: Shall I modify the script so it doesn't keep saying that?
[8:59] CDB Barkley: Glad you could come today
[8:59] CDB Barkley: We'll give folks a few minutes to show up
[9:00] CDB Barkley: But maybe let us know who you are.... if this is your first Buzz meeting
[9:00] Corwin Carillon: Hiya Troy!
[9:00] Troy McLuhan: Hi :)
[9:01] Heidi TeeCee: Hi Everyone ... I'm an instructional designer at Seton Hall University in New Jersey
[9:02] Webhead Link: I'm Vance in Abu Dhabi, computing lecturer, webhead
[9:02] Will Nohkan: Hello all, I am a PhD. student at PSU with an empahsis on rhetoric and new media.
[9:02] Althea Dryke: hello :) I'm Althea and I'm a phD student (computer science) ...working with online communities in my university
[9:03] Cubist Scarborough: I'm a lecturer in contemporary art and graphic design at Leeds Metropolitan University
[9:03] Learning Connoisseur: Aloha! Compter Science Instructor in Hawaii and a super newbie
[9:03] Scarlett Qi: Hi. I teach computer science subjects on the undergraduate and masters levels.
[9:03] Corwin Carillon: Hi everyone, I work in a faculty/academic development unit in Hong Kong
[9:03] Corwin Carillon: hiya boris!
[9:03] CDB Barkley: It's great to have you here.. I am the SL and web barker for New Media COnsortium
[9:04] Boris Grommet: Hey Corwin!
[9:04] CDB Barkley: The Teachers Buzz is something we started in August as a way to share, exchange, etc
[9:04] Butch Dae: Hi Everyone, I'm doing research in Virtual Information Technologies.
[9:04] CDB Barkley: We meet every two weeks, sometimes for just conversation, sometimes for demos
[9:04] CDB Barkley: sometimes we have special guests
[9:04] CDB Barkley: More info is at http://www.nmc.org/campus/Teachers_Buzz_Session
[9:05] CDB Barkley: Just to let you know, we do post transcripts of these sessions to our web site....
[9:05] Corwin Carillon: and http://www.nmc.org/sl for the blog
[9:05] CDB Barkley: .... so if you don;'t want to be included, feel free to just listen in (though we like talkers)
[9:05] Corwin Carillon: hi angrybeth!
[9:05] AngryBeth Shortbread: ello
[9:05] Kisa Naumova: Hey Angry :)
[9:05] Kisa Naumova: Want me to turn you around?
[9:05] AngryBeth Shortbread: its ok, got eyes in the back of my head
[9:06] CDB Barkley: We are excited today to have a number of experts here in SL scripting, and gadget creation
[9:06] Corwin Carillon: lol
[9:06] CDB Barkley: So we'd like to have a mix of some demos and conversation
[9:06] CDB Barkley: But I'd like to thank Kisa for hosting us here and showing some things she has built in SL--
[9:06] Kisa Naumova: Heh
[9:06] CDB Barkley: that deal with connecitng info to and from the web.
[9:07] CDB Barkley: So tell su a bit about your self, Kisa
[9:07] CDB Barkley: "us"
[9:07] Kisa Naumova: It's nice of you all to come. I don't think Steiger's ever seen so many people at once
[9:08] Kisa Naumova: Sorry - someone behind me just asked how it was going
[9:08] Kisa Naumova: Hiyas. I'm Kisa Naumova, and like Cubist over there, I'm a lecturer in Contemporary Art at Leeds Met Uni in the Uk
[9:08] Kisa Naumova: *ahem*
[9:08] Kisa Naumova: I've been in Second Life for about a year and a half now, but it wasn't until relatively recently
[9:08] Kisa Naumova: ...that I really got my head around things
[9:08] Kisa Naumova: more specifically, what it was I enjoyed doing here
[9:09] Kisa Naumova: In fact, it wasn't until I started playing around with the built-in scripting language
[9:09] Kisa Naumova: that I really started to enjjoy it
[9:09] Kisa Naumova: (scuse my typing)
[9:09] Kisa Naumova: The thing that I've found though
[9:09] Kisa Naumova: Is that The Linden Scripting Language
[9:09] Kisa Naumova: (LSL)
[9:10] Kisa Naumova: Isn't all that extensive when it comes to sending information in and out of SL
[9:10] Kisa Naumova: The command I use the most, I guess
[9:10] Kisa Naumova: is llHTTPRequest
[9:10] Kisa Naumova: which lets you communicated with external web servers and web services
[9:10] Kisa Naumova: But the size of the response is quite small
[9:11] Kisa Naumova: So, to really get a decent bit of 3D/2D web integration going on,
[9:11] Kisa Naumova: it's really useful to be able to tie scripts into some of the
[9:11] Kisa Naumova: "Web 2.0" APIs that are pringing up all over the place
[9:11] Kisa Naumova pauses to slurp coffee
[9:12] CDB Barkley: Why is LSL limited in the amount of content it can communicate?
[9:12] Kisa Naumova: Oh, um, well you can only send a certain number of bytes using the command
[9:12] CDB Barkley: Dude!
[9:12] Kisa Naumova: I'm sure someone knows the exact figure
[9:12] Kisa Naumova looks towards AngryBeth
[9:13] Kisa Naumova: :)
[9:13] Robins Hermano: There was an interesting post from Babbage Linden about new messaging capabilites the other day
[9:13] Kisa Naumova: But it's only enough for a few words or sentences
[9:13] Kisa Naumova: Yeah, I spotted that
[9:13] Robins Hermano: I don't know if this will trickle down (or is it up) to LSL
[9:13] AngryBeth Shortbread: well one thing to consider, is its generally chat statements that might be sent out via http, - and that's 1024 chars
[9:13] Kisa Naumova: As usual, a lot of what I've made will probably be superceded at some point ;)
[9:14] CDB Barkley: I thought I recall that requests for RS were lmited to 2k
[9:14] CDB Barkley: RSS
[9:14] Kisa Naumova: But what I've found though, is that you can get away with sending small bits of information to intermediary web services
[9:14] Kisa Naumova: And get them to handle the main "crunching", if you like
[9:14] Kisa Naumova: I was really hoping to show the Flickr Set-browser thing today
[9:14] Kisa Naumova: that I hacked on top of a Flickr slideshow that Angry and I worked on together
[9:14] Darcy Malaprop: is the demo on the big screen?
[9:15] Kisa Naumova: Yeah - but my students are hogging my server, and seemed to haveground it to a halt
[9:15] Kisa Naumova: But perhaps it would be OK if I told you how it worked?
[9:15] CDB Barkley: Yes
[9:15] Corwin Carillon: yep
[9:15] Kisa Naumova: *phew*
[9:15] CDB Barkley: A 3 act play
[9:16] Kisa Naumova: It essentially the same thing that's in that YouTube video that CDB posted to nmc.org the other day
[9:16] Kisa Naumova: When you click on it, it sends Flickr ids of the sets or people you want to a script on my server.
[9:16] Kisa Naumova: A php script
[9:16] CDB Barkley: http://www.3pointd.com/20060927/more-flickr-tools-for-second-life/
[9:17] Kisa Naumova: Thanks CDB :D
[9:17] Kisa Naumova: That script then uses the Flickr API
[9:17] Kisa Naumova: to download all of the sets for that person, and builds a menu-type thing
[9:17] Kisa Naumova: using PHP's inbuilt graphics tools
[9:17] Kisa Naumova: ...which is then shown on the screen
[9:18] Kisa Naumova: Transparent prims act like 'buttons' that cause the LSL to send Flickr set ids to the script
[9:18] Kisa Naumova: ...which then builds the slideshow
[9:18] Kisa Naumova: So really, the object in SL isn't doing all that much
[9:18] Kisa Naumova: or at lkeast, it's not having to send out huge amounts of data
[9:19] CDB Barkley: Setting the texture to a remote image
[9:19] Kisa Naumova: Yes, exactly
[9:19] Robins Hermano: Using LinkedMessage or just listens?
[9:19] Kisa Naumova: LinkedMessage
[9:19] Art Fossett: are you limited to one external image per parcel?
[9:19] CDB Barkley: Maybe explain
[9:20] Kisa Naumova: Ah, the QuickTime media parcel URL thingumy
[9:20] Kisa Naumova: Well, yes. Using the About Land prefences, you can import a quicktime image to show on the side of a prim
[9:20] Kisa Naumova: rather than a texture
[9:21] Kisa Naumova: But yes, you're limited to one QuickTIme stream per parcel
[9:21] Kisa Naumova: ...but
[9:21] Kisa Naumova: I'll show something in a wee bit that gets around that - if that's OK
[9:21] Art Fossett: ok, great
[9:21] Corwin Carillon: cool
[9:21] Kisa Naumova: You can use LSL to set the parcel media texture - which is really what the object does
[9:22] Kisa Naumova: It's just querying the external server for the URL to set it too
[9:22] Kisa Naumova: So, with a bit of Sliggery-pokery
[9:22] Kisa Naumova: (which is a word I just made up)
[9:22] CDB Barkley: We saw a build where they made lots of small parcels, so each chair had media URL
[9:22] Robins Hermano: I like it
[9:22] Kisa Naumova: You can make something that *looks* like a full-on browser
[9:22] Kisa Naumova: ...of sorts
[9:23] Kisa Naumova: Thanks ;)
[9:23] CDB Barkley: It's still a rather advanced thing to be able to do
[9:23] Kisa Naumova: Getting it to all work together?
[9:23] CDB Barkley: yes
[9:23] CDB Barkley: Your average teacher....
[9:24] Kisa Naumova: Ah, yeah, maybe
[9:24] Kisa Naumova: But it should be possible to make things like this that link into pretty-much any API that's available with a bit of tweaking
[9:24] Kisa Naumova: I must confess, it was really fun working with Angry on it
[9:25] Kisa Naumova: And it's partly that 'collaborative' element to SL that I really find a worthwhile thing in my teaching
[9:25] Kisa Naumova: Working with other educators, and students in the same ways
[9:25] CDB Barkley: Agreed, and we owe a lot of thanks to AngryBeth fhor sharing her whiteboard and other gadgets
[9:25] Kisa Naumova: Tell you wwhat - for a proper demo, shall I talk a little about the SL/Twitter thing?
[9:26] Kisa Naumova: At least I could show you something that works ;)
[9:26] AngryBeth Shortbread: thankee do CDB
[9:26] Kisa Naumova: Twitter is a strange little social network
[9:26] CDB Barkley: How many here know about it?
[9:27] Kisa Naumova: It's essentially loads of people all sending small messages to their 'friends'
[9:27] Troy McLuhan: "I'm on the bus home"
[9:27] CDB Barkley: mostly abut what they are doing at the moment
[9:27] Pablo Paz: I've heard about Twitter in the TWIT podcast, but haven't used it
[9:27] CDB Barkley: It sounds really dumb until you try it
[9:27] Kisa Naumova: It's a fun little thing
[9:27] Kisa Naumova: ...with a lot of potential I think
[9:28] CDB Barkley: http://twitter.com/
[9:28] Kisa Naumova: We've started using it for a project we're working on with some students here in Leeds
[9:28] Kisa Naumova: You can send text messages from your phone to it, so we're using that to drive a large-screen display
[9:28] Kisa Naumova: (soon)
[9:28] Kisa Naumova: But I was thinking
[9:29] Kisa Naumova: it would be rather fun to be able to post directly from within Second Life
[9:29] CDB Barkley: You can also send it via IM to a Buddy thatposts for you
[9:29] Kisa Naumova: Oh yeah
[9:29] Kisa Naumova: I always forget that one
[9:29] CDB Barkley: My buddy winks in and out
[9:29] Kisa Naumova: My page, if you're curious, is at http://twitter.com/Kisa
[9:29] CDB Barkley: http://twitter.com/cogdog
[9:30] CDB Barkley: From a profile, you see all the messages from that person's contacts
[9:30] Kisa Naumova: You link to people as friends, and you essentially have an ongoing conversastion between yourselves
[9:30] CDB Barkley: People respond directly
[9:30] Kisa Naumova: http://twitter.com/Kisa/with_friends
[9:30] Kisa Naumova: But yeah, sorry. Twittering from Second Life...
[9:30] Corwin Carillon: sort of aync group IM on steroids
[9:31] Corwin Carillon: async
[9:31] Kisa Naumova: I've since found out that I was wrong in my assumptions...
[9:31] Kisa Naumova: but it appeared that you couldn't send the necessary authentication stuff to twitter just from a LSL script
[9:31] Kisa Naumova: So linking it to an intermediary PHP script seemed the way to go
[9:32] Kisa Naumova: So if you go back to my page now (http://twitter.com/Kisa)
[9:32] Kisa Naumova: It should have just updated
[9:33] Kisa Naumova: Bingo
[9:33] Kisa Naumova: Damm RSI
[9:33] Troy McLuhan: Kisa "is halfway through this talk, and her fingers are starting to hurt"
[9:33] Kisa Naumova: What the *point* of this is, I'm not entirely sure yet
[9:33] CDB Barkley: It can extend your conversations out from SL
[9:33] Kisa Naumova: But it would be possible to use something like this as a very rudimentary blogging tool, perhaps
[9:33] CDB Barkley: to help others track??
[9:34] Kisa Naumova: I must mention, that Ordinal Malaprop has made a much better versionthan mine
[9:34] CDB Barkley: And I thought that new TwitterBox script claims to bring twitter content INTO SL
[9:34] Kisa Naumova: ...that also brings the
[9:34] Kisa Naumova: Ah
[9:34] Kisa Naumova: That's just what I was going to say
[9:34] CDB Barkley: The script that Kisa wrote made it so I can type a message in my chat preceede by /8
[9:34] Boris Grommet: Also helps maintain consensual suspension of disbelief - "I'm on the bus" ... "Now I've arrived at SL"
[9:34] CDB Barkley: that sends the message to my own twitter
[9:35] Kisa Naumova: I thought it was /9
[9:35] AngryBeth Shortbread: actually, blogging can be made simpler - most allow email posting - and SL can send out Email
[9:35] CDB Barkley: I made mine 8 cause I use 9 for Bloghud
[9:35] Kisa Naumova: Ah, right
[9:35] Kisa Naumova: But I think that there's a whole bunch of things that are starting to really take advantage
[9:35] Kisa Naumova: ...of llHTTPRequest
[9:35] Kisa Naumova: So that it's not just all notecards flying all over the place
[9:36] CDB Barkley: They really need some real APIs
[9:36] Kisa Naumova: SL, or other things?
[9:36] Robins Hermano: it seems that llHttpRequest also needs PHP to be really functional, is that a good assessment?
[9:36] Corwin Carillon: yep
[9:36] CDB Barkley: SL
[9:36] CDB Barkley: Need not be PHP
[9:36] Kisa Naumova: Or, I imagine, some other form of web programming language
[9:36] Kisa Naumova: .ASP perhaps
[9:36] Kisa Naumova: (even though it is evil)
[9:36] CDB Barkley: The first flickr screen I saw was done with Ruby
[9:36] CDB Barkley: by HackDiary
[9:36] Boris Grommet: Yahoo's Pipes looks pretty promising in this space
[9:36] Kisa Naumova: THat was Matt Bidulph's thing yeah?
[9:37] CDB Barkley: Yes
[9:37] Kisa Naumova: Yes - I'm quite keen to play with them
[9:37] Corwin Carillon: promising in what way Boris?
[9:38] Boris Grommet: Much of the power of writing a PHP script, none (well, less) of the pain
[9:38] Corwin Carillon: thx
[9:38] Kisa Naumova: I think that's what it promises
[9:38] Troy McLuhan: Soon I imagine a new SL Client or client plugin will come out with ways to send messages straight from the client to the internet, withough having to go through LL's servers first
[9:38] Kisa Naumova: To be able to link APIs together easily
[9:39] CDB Barkley: It should be easier to use external content in SL
[9:39] Kisa Naumova: Yes, so we're not just relying on the QuickTime stream
[9:39] Kisa Naumova: ...which is most versatile than a lot of people think, I think
[9:40] Boris Grommet: I was at a conference with Pathfinder Linden last week - from our discussion, I think that's on the menu
[9:40] Kisa Naumova: Hmm, I think though
[9:40] Troy McLuhan: Can you remind us what kinds of content can pipe in through QuickTime streams?
[9:40] Kisa Naumova: that it's all very well hanging on for new features
[9:40] Kisa Naumova: but it's much more fun to acdtually play with what's available now - jsut to see what you can make it do
[9:41] CDB Barkley: Anything QuickTime player can play
[9:41] Will Nohkan: Do you think LL is protecting itself from copyright and IP lawsuits by attmpting to keep things limited?
[9:41] Boris Grommet: Kisa, agreed!
[9:41] Troy McLuhan: Haha - which is what, CDB?
[9:41] CDB Barkley: including JPEG
[9:41] CDB Barkley: .mov, .mp3, rtsp streams
[9:41] AngryBeth Shortbread: flash, if its version 5 and below - and no interactivity
[9:41] Kisa Naumova: I always forget about flash
[9:41] CDB Barkley: Good point!
[9:41] Cubist Scarborough: I like the challenge of working within the limitations of the existing technology. Quicktime has loads of untapped potential.
[9:42] CDB Barkley: Flash on a Prim!
[9:42] Kisa Naumova: Can I show yous the thing I made that uses Quicktime's "layout' capabilities?
[9:42] CDB Barkley: Yes!
[9:42] Kisa Naumova: OK, it's a bit temprimental
[9:42] CDB Barkley crosses fingers.. er paws
[9:42] Cubist Scarborough: SMiLe!
[9:42] Kisa Naumova: That's the one :)
[9:42] AngryBeth Shortbread: SMIL me!
[9:43] Kisa Naumova: Gimme two ticks...
[9:43] AngryBeth Shortbread assumes kisa's kicking the xserve
[9:44] Kisa Naumova: They haven't let me take that out of the box yet
[9:44] Kisa Naumova: So this kinda works the same as the Flickr thing
[9:44] Kisa Naumova: If yous can't see it, hit the "play" button on the "movies" thinugmy at the bottom of the screen
[9:45] Kisa Naumova: OK, so before I start playing with this
[9:45] Kisa Naumova: I need to warn you that it does cause little "pauses" in the client
[9:45] Kisa Naumova: I've been working with Callum Linden on it, but even he couldn't work out why
[9:46] Kisa Naumova: So this object is linked to a website that I cobbled together a little while ago
[9:46] AngryBeth Shortbread: I think when you do a parcel media change - it sleeps for 2 secs - and seems to take your client with it
[9:46] Kisa Naumova: It's also something to do with the SMIL on the server
[9:46] Kisa Naumova: I can send images straight to the website
[9:46] CDB Barkley: What should we see?
[9:47] Kisa Naumova: (http://www.sleeds.org)
[9:47] Kisa Naumova: Well, at the moment, possibly just white, with some writing on it
[9:47] Troy McLuhan: I see 7 different pics, all apparently coming from one feed?
[9:47] Corwin Carillon: yep
[9:47] Corwin Carillon: me too
[9:47] Sorcs Nolan: I am seeing the 7 pics, too
[9:47] Boris Grommet: Same here
[9:47] Kisa Naumova: Sorry - I can send images to the site using the "Send a Postcard" from the snaphot menu
[9:48] Kisa Naumova: But what this objcet does, is send small bits of data to an external script, which builds a Quicktime SMIL movie containing all the images on the front page...
[9:48] Kisa Naumova: ...and sends the URL of that Movie back to the object here
[9:48] Kisa Naumova: which then sets the media parcel URL
[9:48] sleeds.org: Requesting...
[9:48] Kisa Naumova: With me?
[9:49] Robins Hermano: yep
[9:49] CDB Barkley: COOL
[9:49] Kisa Naumova: See what I mean about the pause?
[9:49] Boris Grommet: Nice!
[9:49] sleeds.org: Requesting...
[9:49] Kisa Naumova: It's *kinda* like a mini browser for images
[9:49] Troy McLuhan: Inconceivable!
[9:50] Kisa Naumova: It also does text - but I left them off this version
[9:50] sleeds.org: Requesting...
[9:50] sleeds.org: Requesting...
[9:50] Kisa Naumova: Damm QT pausing...
[9:50] sleeds.org: Requesting...
[9:50] Kisa Naumova: Ah sweet
[9:50] Kisa Naumova: I love it when things work :)
[9:50] AngryBeth Shortbread: you got the wrong side :)
[9:51] Kisa Naumova: LOL
[9:51] CDB Barkley nods like a big
[9:51] CDB Barkley:
[9:51] Sorcs Nolan: I don't think the pauses are that bad, and this is very cool indeed
[9:51] Kisa Naumova: Sorry Angry ;)
[9:51] Kisa Naumova: At the moment, it only really works with this and the main site I've developed for my students
[9:51] sleeds.org: Requesting...
[9:51] Kisa Naumova: Mainly because I have the passwords for the database
[9:51] Kisa Naumova: But I'm hoping to make a Flickr version at some point
[9:52] Kisa Naumova: ...tailored around their API
[9:52] CDB Barkley: How do you see using this?
[9:52] Kisa Naumova: Well, this is just a bit of an Ooooooh! thing
[9:53] Kisa Naumova: But the version I've made that works with my students' work is quite useful for one-to-one tutorials
[9:53] Kisa Naumova: I quite like the idea of being able to walk into a 'site' that contains all their work
[9:53] AngryBeth Shortbread: I think this can tie in with E-portfolio
[9:53] Kisa Naumova: ...and talk to them about it 'in person'
[9:53] Kisa Naumova: Yep :)
[9:53] CDB Barkley: It feels more dynamic
[9:53] CDB Barkley: More real
[9:54] Kisa Naumova: But what I'm hoping, is to work with them in making things like this do what they want them to do
[9:54] Kisa Naumova: It does moving image too, I think BTW
[9:54] Kisa Naumova: But it is rather slow :(
[9:55] CDB Barkley: What do you call this?
[9:56] Kisa Naumova: I just hung for 2 minutes
[9:56] Kisa Naumova: Weird
[9:57] Kisa Naumova: Oh poo
[9:57] Flight Band: All Go
[9:57] CDB Barkley: To mnay hands on the remote
[9:57] AngryBeth Shortbread: danger will robinson
[9:58] Kisa Naumova: Heh, "emergent" technology ;)
[9:58] Sorcs Nolan: flirtin' with disaster, to quote Molly Hatchet? :)
[9:58] CDB Barkley: go molly, babe
[9:59] Kisa Naumova: TOtally lagged the sim out there
[9:59] Kisa Naumova: SOrry about that
[9:59] Troy McLuhan crashed
[10:00] AngryBeth Shortbread: 0.4 fps, its' an alltime low
[10:00] Kisa Naumova: Should be OK now
[10:00] Kisa Naumova: I guess that's what I mean by SL being a "Developoment" environemnt ;)
[10:00] Corwin Carillon: lol
[10:00] CDB Barkley: Cannot.. hardlyy... type....
