Welcome to the NMC Campus in Second Life!

There’s much more to see and do than can be described in a short page, but here’s a quick tour guide (and some tips for moving around in Second Life). Buildings are identified with signs on the ground level.

[edit] Campus Locations

[edit] The Spohrer Center (1)

When you teleport to the NMC campus, you arrive here on the building’s roof. Take a moment to look at the map and familiarize yourself with the campus. You can teleport to any numbered location by clicking on the number on the map. You can recognize this building from the top by all the sculptures on it.

[edit] The Perez-Green Plaza (2)

Here’s a wide area with several sculptures. The Spohrer Center surrounds three sides of the plaza; the fourth side is open to the campus. If you go into either wing of the Spohrer Center, you can move through the building to the Huntley Ballroom (3), where you can make music! You can also enter or leave the Ballroom by flying down through the hole in the roof of the Spohrer Center.

[edit] The Aho Museum (4)

Enjoy two installations along the multi-level walkways inside, and explore the three satellite galleries featuring additional exhibits. You can recognize this building while flying by the trees in planter boxes on the roof and by the inverted pyramid shape. On top is the shuttle to the NMC Boardroom, where NMC meetings occur.

[edit] Gonick Amphitheatre (5)

You can see this from the entrance to the Aho Museum. It’s also easily visible from the air with its classic amphitheatre form and large NMC screen.

[edit] Jacob Hall (6) and Woolsey Hall (8)

These are the two NMC classroom buildings. Both are small buildings at the water’s edge with peaked glass roofs. Inside, you can watch a movie or hear a lecture.

[edit] Brown Library (7)

Cross the walkway from Jacob Hall or Woolsey Hall and enter Brown Library. From the air, it’s the large building with the grid-shaped pattern on the sides and the flat glass roof. Fly down through the roof or come in from the steps at ground level under the building. Here are places to sit and chat and lots of media to explore.

[edit] Sandbox Elevator (9)

This is at the center of campus, roughly between the Gonick Amphitheatre and the large fountain. Sit down on one of the seats, click “ready” from the blue drop-down box, and you’ll be taken up to the Sandbox area, where you can create objects to your heart’s content. If you create a keeper, you can deposit it in the ATM-like machine and it will be reviewed and possibly put on display.

[edit] Moving and Looking

There are several options available for controlling your avatar's movement.

  • Using the Mouse: To walk or fly, right- (or apple-) click on your avatar, select go, and click on the directional arrows with your mouse.
  • Using the Keyboard: Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move forward (up arrow), back (down arrow), or right and left (right and left arrows, respectively). To fly, press and hold Page Up (or press the "f" key). To hover, let go of Page Up; you can now use your arrow keys to fly around. To land, press and hold Page Down (or press "c").

There are spaces around the campus where you can "park" your avatar while you chat or look around. You can sit on almost anything in Second Life, including the ground, the edges of steps and walls, and most objects. To sit down, right- (or apple-) click on the desired spot and select “Sit Here.”

To view an object, use the alt key and click on it. To zoom in and out, use the mouse. Adding the control keys allows you to orbit around your avatar, and adding control and shift allows you to pan from side to side. See the Second Life Help menu: Basic Help→ Basic Second Life Skills→ Camera Controls for details. To view a movie, be sure your video controls are enabled. You can set this in the Edit→ Preferences tab, under audio/video.

[edit] Chatting

Select “Chat” from your tool bar and start typing. Hit “Escape” when you’re done with the conversation!

Note—if people are involved in a voice-discussion on TeamSpeak, or are very new to Second Life, their avatars may not respond immediately to chatting. Patience is the better part of valor.
