NMC Orientation Island Education Resources

As previously noted, the NMC is developing an Orientation Island designed expressly for educators. This is part of plans by Second Life to offer a range of specific new entrance experiences geared towards interest areas. We've already pilot tested a custom registration form and collected some ideas for desired features contributed by Second Life Educators (SLED) Listserv. New users creating an account via the NMC site will be transported to this new Orientation Island located on NMC Campus.

Our starting point is a basic clone of a basic Orientation Island, and what we hope to make different is the experience after learning the basics of navigation and movement. This will include access to educational resources and freebies, as well as easy teleportation to educational regions in Second Life. Beyond orientating new users, we hope to create a resource are that experienced avatars might also return to.

We are interested in collecting here some information for those interested in being a part of this new Orientation Island.

[edit] Adding Your Destination to the Teleport Options

At the end of the new Orientation, we will provide either kiosks and/or notecards with landmarks to educational destinations. We will consider adding any landmark associated with an educational organization or any nonprofit entity that supports or provides resources for educators. If you are interested, please add your information to the list below and send a logo/image texture and a landmark in world to Larry Pixel.

Education Teleport Destinations Please include the organization's name, the SL region and coordinates, and an avatar for contact purposes. Edit this section's wiki page using code something like

 * Big State University, Big State Campus (28,225,42), Wildcat Bixby

[edit] Mentoring

Another aspect of this experience we are developing is a mentorship program. The essential concept is simple -- we'd like to invite experienced SL practitioners to volunteer time to assist newly born avatars. The NMC orientation island will be open to all, and will include a "social" area that new arrivals will funnel through on their way to educational destinations. We hope to encourage more experienced avatars to spend some time there occasionally and see it as a way to meet new people interested in education, help people grow, and build the educational community within Second Life.

If you have any interest in helping out in any way, or any special expertise you might be willing to share, please add your avatar name below and we will be in touch with more soon.

  • Heidi Teecee
  • Corwin Carrillon
  • Wi Burt (support for Japanese students)
  • Birdie Newcomb
  • Eloise Pasteur
  • Davyd Bingyi
  • Rainbow Drake
  • Wuzzadiva Iddinja (can assist gov and healthcare, accessibility resources)
  • LoriVonne Lustre

[edit] New Avatar Learning Resources

We're especially interested in finding any resources (especially video) that we might use to create a multimedia learning trail to help new residents learn to use their camera, shop, build, work with their avatar -- anything that will help a new person get up to speed more quickly. If you know of any videos, slides shows, notecard series, etc, please list them below. Ideally you'd provide a url, a landmark, or a person to contact. Alternatively, you can share such resources with Larry Pixel in world.
