Thank you for your interest in the Ivory Tower Library of Primitives.

This building and all it contains is intended to be an inworld, self-guided, self-paced, visual tutorial of the workings of the Secondlife primitives editing interface. It is presented to you in the hope it will be useful, and will provide you with a thorough grounding in all aspects of building in SecondLife.

The Ivory Tower is largely about primitives, or prims. Prims are the building blocks of the world, and all that exists in second life is a form of prim or another. Avatars count as a special type of prim. Building with prims is akin to additive sculpting in which you are building up a larger, complicated shape using smaller, simple shapes. It is something akin to building with legos, except there are no interlocking pegs and sockets. On top of that, you can easily cut these legos, or make them hollow, resize and recolor them. Perhaps Legos are a bad anology. Let's just say it's not like you're not using subtractive sculpting (carving a new shape out of a pre-existing shape), you're adding shapes to form a whole, but you have a lot of freedom to alter each of those shapes to suit your purposes.

You are encouraged to try out the steps, tips and techniques shown in the library on the spot. You can either take or delete items you make here. Just right click your mouse on your object and select Take. Or to delete, right click it and go to More/Delete. The library grounds are set to auto return all objects that do not belong to me every two hours, so please keep this in mind before you get too involved with a building project here. If you've just rezzed a prim, and it happens to get wiped, please rez another and keep at it!

The tower is made up of six modules, and each module covers one particular prim type. To reflect its prim type, each module is constructed almost entirely of the prim type it treats on. This was the challenge I set myself when I started to build the building, and it's to give you some ideas of how the various prim types can be used or missused, as the case may be.

Attached to the library are two public use alternative sandboxes in Natoma. One of these is teraformable for you to try your hand at the land tools if you do not currently own any land. The other is a stable, building envornment. Both are cleaned at fairly regular intervals before I go to bed, unless people are working there at the time, but please do try to clean up after yourself. Build all you want, but take what you build!

I'm currently constructing a texturing and avatar attachment branch of the ITLP in Natoma. At the time of this writing it's a big empty building, but I hope it will be filled with exhibits by the time you choose to vist.
