The 2007 NMC Summer Conference, hosted by the School of Informatics at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis takes place June 6-9, 2007. The program features quite a few sessions related to Second Life, and we are aiming to bring a number of them in world with audio, video, and interactions available to participants at Indianapolis and from afar.
Please use this wiki as a reference to the SL related activities. If you take any photos, write any blog posts, or bookmark any web sites related to the conference, please tag this conference with nmc2007.
We are looking for some volunteers to help facilitate (see below) between RL and SL and to greet in-world visitors. Where possible, we are trying to include the remote audience, but keep in mind there's a lot going in in these 4 packed days. Also, if anyone is interested in writing some stories for the NMC Campus Observer, please contact CDB Barkley / Alan Levine
Lastly, for those at the conference, we are setting up some times and places you may wish to gather with other attendees active in Second Life, and you can play "You Don't Look Like Your Avatar".
Times are listed in local Eastern Standard Time, and when an event is in Second Life, Pacific / Second Life Times are also included). For any event on NMC Campus, if you have not done so already, you must join an NMC group to be able to visit the locations used for this conference.

[edit] Thursday June 7
- 8:30-9:45am (EST) 5:30-6:45am (PDT/SLT) Opening keynote Fantasy Regnant by Edward Castronova (Indiana University) will be video streamed into NMC Campus at the Red Rocks Amphitheater on Research Park Research Park (39,18,45).
- For years, gaming technology has been considered an area of opportunity for universities. Edward will argue that the opportunity phase has passed, that we will now be forced to adapt to the new world that digital fantasy gaming is creating. That new world is more than 3D; more than immersive; more than online; more than entertainment; more than communication. It is all of those things, and one thing more, a new source of Meaning - a critical contribution of the games industry, very little noticed. All together synthetic worlds make a new frontier, and frontiers dramatically disrupt the old world. Edward will talk about how the new world, with its new maps of meaning, will reshape society within a generation.
We are looking for volunteers to help act as in world facilitators- assist with getting to this location, helping people activate their movie player, and helping communicate any questions from the SL audience to us in Indianapolis. - Drawing on several inter-related ethnographic studies of multimodal virtual worlds, this session will examine the significance of affect on transformative moments in people’s online lives. These moments, whether filled with great joy and hilarity or laden with angst and sorrow, are all moments which crystallize experience, provide a privileged locus for the creation of knowledge, and have a significant impact upon identity. From younger adolescents who embrace online communities as part of their normal socialization, to the silver surfers, the older generation of converts to digital culture, I will explore the motivations and emotions of a range of individual cases in order to illuminate the key factors which are driving the changing dimensions of new media literacies.

- It is not yet possible for us to duplicate the richness and complexity of the real world in a virtual world. What instructional design elements can we use to simulate real world experiences? What affordances do these virtual spaces offer that the real world does not and what are the barriers to success? Come join our panel of five educators to tackle these and other complex issues in our exploration in the use of virtual worlds in the classroom.
- 10:15am-12:00pm (EST) / 7:15-9:00am (PDT/SLT) Closing keynote New Media Means New Choices by Kristina Hooper Woolsey (Woolsey and Associates) will be video streamed into NMC Campus at a newly built Red Rocks Amphitheater on Research Park Research Park (39,18,45).
- Early activities in the exploration of new media opportunities involved the invention of new media modes, forms and genres. These have included wikis, blogs, videologs, text messaging, email, hypermedia, and more. These representations have taken advantage of media-rich elements, interconnectivity, and social participation. Given the establishment of these "new media" uses, the challenge has now become the development of an expressive constituency that is competent in these new media forms, and, more importantly, that is capable of choosing which of these is important for what context.
- This presentation will examine this proposition, suggesting opportunities for how youth might be trained to engage new media, and how new media might evolve from its predominance in pop culture to a significant role in academic disciplines.
We are looking for volunteers to help act as in world facilitators- assist with getting to this location, helping people activate their movie player, and helping communicate any questions from the SL audience to us in Indianapolis.
