[edit] Challenges and Concerns
- Last names have to be chosen from a list of provided names. You can choose a last name, but only for a fee.
- Since 13-17 year olds are confined to the Teen Grid classes that bridge the 18 year old barrier have problems.
- Griefers - the flexibility and freedoms that Second Life affords also allows residents to disrupt the experience of others.
- High technological requirements - a relatively fast computer with a good graphics card and broadband internet access is required.
- Steep learning curve - For non-gamers, a difficult interface that's not too user-friendly.(less so for younger students than teachers)
- Digital divide - due to access to technology or cost of service.
- Accessibility - as yet no technology to allow vision impaired people to enter. however, as the client is now open source, this will hopefully get taken up by a group and resolved to some extent
- Regular downtime required for grid updates & need to download a new client regularly
- Grid stability and performance problems, including downtime and lag
- Platform limitations - prim and avatar limits per area
- Non-portability of assets - if Second Life closes assets cannot be taken elsewhere.
- No backup - you can lose everything - both as a result of technical issues and conflict with Linden Lab - with no legal recourse.
- Proprietary service (as with Active Worlds, There, Kanaeva, etc and of course no different from LMS's such as Blackboard, Angel, D2L, etc)
- Interoperability - lack of agreed standards for virtual worlds which leads to issues of:
- Portability
- Legal issues for institutions - indemnity, intellectual property
- Social/Legal Issues
- Privacy issues
- Child protection and duty of care (for younger students)
