Ideas for an Orientation for NMC members new to Second Life:

Activities

  • self-guided modules that take place on different campus locations
    • Classroom- how to use screens, how to conduct discussions in clasroom type places
    • Sandbox - basics of building, rezzing things in SL. What kinds of classes might use this space?
    • Art Museum - use of notecards, display of works to be viewed, use of notecards, gift bags etc for classes
    • Board Room - use of smaller discussion space?
    • Library -use of reference services in SL, informal discusson places
    • Other education-related spaces in SL: partic. ICT library
    • Huntley Ballroom - large group activities, explore interactivity with jusical instruments
    • Gonick Ampitheater - use of media screens, large group events, perhaps cover use of NMC live ausio stream capability
    • Informal Spaces on Campus such as Lagoon, meditation area, mountain top, waterfall, etc
    • Special places such as Planetatorium, underwater reef
  • ties in with NMC regularly scheduled "teachin in SL chat hours" (this needs to be developed as an NMC activity)
  • the "hunt" for clues e.g. like a WebQuest - a non-linear SLebQuest (?) i.e. game like and something that mirrors the way SL can be exploted differently (not the typical/traditional type of training model of input/demonstration followed by practice) - discovery learning on the fly as you complete a 'mission'. Clues could be attached to artwork for example.
  • requires actitivities/visits to three info spaces where they get the pieces for the jigsaw: NMC Campus, SL generally and on the net about SL (e.g. NMC Observer, NMC Campus WIki, SimTeach Wiki, Flickr, Snapzilla, the SL Machinima blog, teacher and NMC campus people's blogs about teaching in SL ... e.g. Anya, Danielle, the Pepperdine Grad group (Wendy Widget), etc) ... we could give them an opml file with this as part of a gift box)
  • Field trips (and write up) to other educational spaces in SL
  • posting something to this wiki
  • posting comments, articles to NMC blog
  • suggesting resource for NMC collection via the del.icio.us tag for:nmc_campus

Demonstrated proficiencies

  • write up & coordinate a SL based activity like a field trip, a meeting, a presentation
  • write a post for the NMC Campus Observer (this is not really an SL teaching proficiency, should we make it more of a graduation requirement?) - include in-world snapshots taken at key waypoints/waystations
  • add some user documentation or activity descriptions to the Campus Wiki this is not really an SL teaching proficiency, should we make it more of a graduation requirement?)
  • give a (text and audio/audio-enhanced?) campus tour to a nOOb or a group
  • help orient new users as a greeter during the pre-event newbie receptions
  • add to the list of teaching idea resources for their discipline in the ICT library/NMC library (can we network these so what get's updated in one gets updated in the other using a vendor machine type of thing) - which means producing SL notecards
  • develop a poster based on these ideas for their discpline about how NMCcampus/SL could be leveraged for learning in their discipline
  • present the poster at an NMCcmapus in-world event and/or present later in RL & SL at NMC conference

Embedded skill sets

  • able to use the screens, add slides to the HUDs
  • able to use audio in conjunction with NMC Campus, such as Skype or Team Speak, as well as arrange withg NMC for live audio streams
  • know and help others understand the rules about rezzing; faculty are allowed to rez on the grass "downstairs"
  • can place videos & audio into land parcels/screens (which means we need to figure out how to let them do that. I think now you need to be an estate manager to do that. We may be able to assign them rights to just certain parts, however.)
  • create notecards, hyperlinked, with images and Landmarks
  • taking photographs, making movies

Pedagogical Exploitation in SL

  • modelling the unique added-value(s) of SL into the faculty certificate program - so we hit the 'WHY' very explicitly and clearly
    • provide the option to do the self-study guides both individually and as a small collaborative self-study group - SL is inherently a social space so need to make this explicit (has implications for demonstrated proficiencies too like joining a group)

Education-related Tools

  • on NMC Campus
    • audio channel on NMC land
    • video screens
  • elsewhere (free/commercial)
    • free portable (stay with the avatar) resources at ICT library (talk with Milosun to network / duplicate some of these resources like the disciplinary notecards within the NMC campus library)
    • commercial resources linked within ICT library
      • THiNC

Syllabus Outline

Session Duration: est. 2 hours (live online or self-access)

  • Pre-Session
    • participants join an NMC-SLFacCert listserv

    • participants watch episode 1 of the Secrets of Second Life video podcast
  • Session 1
    • Getting around SL (I ** Basic Movement): participants learn about basic movement: Walk, Fly Teleport, Mouselook view' using the zoom,
    • Communication (I): Chat vs IM
    • Know your SL Client (I ** Preferences): participants learn to make NMC Campus their home and how to get back (teleport) to it using the SL Client menu, how to open SL packages (boxes that must be put on the ground, opened)
    • Know your avatar (I): How/what to fill out in your profile. Appearance, how to save an appearance as an "outfit" (a folder) so you can change with a drop of the folder on the AV (Jokay's pdf handout / in-world book)
  • Session 2
    • Getting around SL (II): participants learn about animation over**riders (attached to avatar, attached to objects), how to "attach" things like a coffee cup to a hand. How to put things away, or delete
    • Communication (II): Individual IM vs Group IM
    • Know your SL Client (II ** Preferences): how to force a different time of day ** don't have to move in the dark!

Session 6 Learning outcomes:

By the end of this task, you will have:

  • explored some of the resources available on the Second Life website
  • observed the a possible learning task outcome from within Second Life
  • learnt how to transfer objects from one avatar to another within Second Life
  • learnt how to find an avatar and instant message them in-world
  • learnt how to create a note and rename it within Second Life
  • written up a possible way you might use student produced movies created in Second Life with yours students

Task Instructions

One of the learning activities possible in Second Life is the creation of in-world movies, called machinima. These could be combined with other learning tasks (e.g. to record a role-play or simulation) or could be a learning task in themselves for any disciplinary context where some form of digital storytelling is appropriate.

For this part of your quest, you need to bring back an in-world landmark (like a web bookmark) and deposit it in the inventory of Corwin Carillon and also instant message him in-world with the answer to the question below.

On the Second Life web site ( [1] http://secondlife.com), one of the Second Life staff (Eric Linden) showcased ( [2] http://secondlife.com/showcase/) a machinima ( [3] http://secondlife.com/showcase/machinima.php) based on a poem set in the Wild West.

Your task, should you accept it , is to find the video linked from their website, watch it and then visit the movie set inside Second Life. When you are at the set, save a landmark into your inventory and take a photo of yourself sitting on one of the horses on the set. Then upload the photo into your inventory and deposit both the photo and the landmark in Corwin Carillon's inventory and IM him to tell him what avatar movement you saw in the machinima that is not yet possible in Second Life. Finally, create a note in Second Life with your ideas for how you might use a second life machinima in a course in your discipline and then give this note to Corwin Carillon as well. Make sure you 'Rename' the note so that it has the title: Machinima [Your Name] before giving it to Corwin.

Resources/Setup Required

  • listserv - NMC-SL ?
  • SL group - NMCfaculyadjunct (not the right name but along these lines) - they can use this to work collaboratively if they wish and grad from this group into NMCfaculty group
  • opml of key RSS feeds ? - NMC del.icio.us, blog and flickr feeds, other blogs, podcasts, machima/screencasts/vodcasts about SL e.g. Secrets of Second Life - excellent short screencasts aimed at SL noobies (although there is the case of perpetual noobie in SL, like perpetual beta!)
  • specific tag (del.icio.us/flickr) for resources for this group e.g. NMC_campus_faculty
  • we should make a gateway to our resources -- where they (and we!) can link to all the sprawling wiki, blog, del.icio.us, flickr, and other content that relates to NMC Campus.

When someone completes the certification, which we hope will be fun and easy, they get added to a special group called "NMC Faculty," and we give them acess to the screens with their own HUD.

And we give them a fantastic virtual academic medal, modeled on the one in the NMC Fellows award!!!
