[edit] NMC Campus Teacher's Quest

A journey through the campus; we give them tools. links, and ideas as they go through the various stages in the 'quest'.

When someone completes the quest, which will be fun and easy, they get added to the "NMC Faculty," in-world group that owns land and useful objects and tools on campus. And we give them a fantastic virtual academic medal, modeled on the one in the NMC Fellows award!!!

[edit] Quests & Rewards

For each quest achieved, we now have a way of dispensing a reward, some object that would be useful to them in Second Life, and a task they can complete with it.

The essence of the idea, which Nick has now in prototype (see NMC Campus 12,70,22), is that we use the NMC Book -- load them up, and set them around. You join a group (NMC Teacher's Quest) to start the quest, and only people in the group can open the books. We may eventually place 30 or more of these around, but you'd only need say 7 to get "certified"

Each book contains:

  • a "thing" something useful to a teacher in SL like this
  • a "landmark" that either takes you to a place useful in accomplishing the task, or to a place where the "thing" is especially well-used -- anywhere in SL for either case, eg The Ivory Tower Library of Primitives, Natoma (209, 164, 280) or a place on the 2D web (e.g. Simteach).
  • a notecard explaining the task and providing a link to another reward.
  • a notecard explaining the link and what you can learn by going there

How to get it done

  • Each of us (Larry, Alan, Nick, Danielle, Heidi) takes 2-3 and builds them. We'll quickly have 10-15!!

[edit] Locations of Current Rewards

([NP] = In Process)

  • Campfire - NMC Campus (8,66,22) URL Catcher, Tree Stump Seat and Landmark to House of Primitives
  • Art area in the NW corner of NMC Campus (23, 238, 26) Stadium Rings Seating, URL for SimTeach, Landmark to Second Life Campus. {! Need to raise this one up a bit...it is buried in the ground!}
  • [NP]Woolsey Hall - NMC Campus ( , , ) NMC Campus video/slide screen, with instructions for use and locations of screens that faculty can use already
  • [NP]Gonick - NMC Campus ( , , ) Random slide show; upload pictures; link to Angry Beth's home and her whiteboard as another approach
  • [NP]Welcome Center Roof - NMC Campus ( , , ) An explantion of Siefert's math lessons on the roof, and link to his home island, The Future

[edit] Possibilities for Quests/Rewards

  • [Nick used for Quest Book 1] The URL globe thing Nick uses for the Buzz session (The most recent URL mentioned in a chat becomes a link target when clicked) - Nick's not been able to contact the owner for over a month, she doesn't seem to be in SL these days and messages have not been responsed to. Nick's since found a similar item and has used this for the prototype.
  • [Larry will do]A copy of the NMC Campus video/slide screen, with

instructions for use and locations of screens that faculty can use already

  • [Larry will do] Upload pictures to SL and make a simple slide show - need to give the NMC screens (are these based on AngryBeth's whiteboard?)[LJ: no they are not...very different approach -- but I plan to use the simple random slide show as it is simpler
  • [Larry will do] An explanation of Siefert's math lessons on the roof, and links to his home island, The Future
  • Planetarium and link to International Space Museum
  • The chat recorder Nick brings to the Buzz session (this is one of Eloise's commercial products - she gives such a lot for free already, can we see about purchasing a copiable version from her?). [LJ: yes, we have d get for this...send me her SL name. Her SL name is Eloise Pasteur.]
  • [Alan will do - I have one] --- THINC TV a freebie on SLBoutique, allows anyone to use chat to specify URL of video and it can be played on the TV. Also available in the ICT library (which is a little less hassle), so we could point to both. Another option is a script I m trying to get working that would allow via chat to change the URL on the parcel.
  • [Danielle and I will ask her]HandUp Chair from AngryBeth (we need to ask her for it, as this is a commercial product)
  • [Nick used for Quest Book 2] Jeremy Kemp's Stadium Rings (the rotating seats thing used at the recent buzz - Jeremy wants to keep these for his Teachers Lounge but has promised to make a variant for me ... time maybe a factor though in getting this)
  • Angry Beth's whiteboard (I think this is a token L$1 for the latest version which gives 4 screens as NSEW)
  • [Danielle and I have this info, do we need to have a little blub written about it?]SLED and other ed groups membership info
  • [Alan will do] creating content in notecards, with linka to photos, SL landmarks, other notecards- hyperlinked content; perhaps add in use of a notecard drop box (likely in ICT or on SimTeach forums]
  • [Heidi and Danielle will do]Lesson on taking photos great model

[edit] Possible Activities

  • self-guided modules that take place on different campus locations
    • Classroom- how to use screens, how to conduct discussions in clasroom type places
    • Sandbox - basics of building, rezzing things in SL. What kinds of classes might use this space?
    • Art Museum - use of notecards, display of works to be viewed, use of notecards
    • Board Room - use of smaller discussion space?
    • Library -use of reference services in SL, informal discusson places
    • Huntley Ballroom - large group activities, explore interactivity with jusical instruments
    • Gonick Ampitheater - use of media screens, large group events, perhaps cover use of NMC live ausio stream capability
    • Informal Spaces on Campus such as Lagoon, meditation area, mountain top, waterfall, etc
    • Special places such as Planetarium, underwater reef
  • ties in with NMC regularly scheduled "teaching in SL chat hours" (this needs to be developed as an NMC activity)
  • the "hunt" for clues e.g. like a WebQuest - a non-linear SLebQuest (?) i.e. game like and something that mirrors the way SL can be exploited differently (not the typical/traditional type of training model of input/demonstration followed by practice) - discovery learning on the fly as you complete a 'mission'. Clues could be attached to artwork for example.
  • requires activities/visits to three info spaces where they get the pieces for the jigsaw: NMC Campus, SL generally and on the net about SL (e.g. NMC Observer, NMC Campus WIki, SimTeach Wiki, Flickr, Snapzilla, the SL Machinima blog, teacher and NMC campus people's blogs about teaching in SL ... e.g. Anya, Danielle, the Pepperdine Grad group (Wendy Widget), etc) ... we could give them an opml file with this as part of a gift box)
  • posting something to this wiki
  • posting comments, articles to NMC blog
  • suggesting resource for NMC collection via the del.icio.us tag for:nmc_campus

[edit] Key Proficiencies to Demonstrate

  • write up & coordinate a SL based activity like a field trip, a meeting, a presentation
  • write a post for the NMC Campus Observer (this is not really an SL teaching proficiency, should we make it more of a graduation requirement?) - include in-world snapshots taken at key waypoints/waystations
  • add some user documentation or activity descriptions to the Campus Wiki this is not really an SL teaching proficiency, should we make it more of a graduation requirement?)
  • give a (text and audio/audio-enhanced?) campus tour to a nOOb or a group
  • help orient new users as a greeter during the pre-event newbie receptions
  • add to the list of teaching idea resources for their discipline in the ICT library/NMC library (can we network these so what get's updated in one gets updated in the other using a vendor machine type of thing) - which means producing SL notecards
  • develop a poster based on these ideas for their discpline about how NMCcampus/SL could be leveraged for learning in their discipline
  • present the poster at an NMC Campus in-world event and/or present later in RL & SL at NMC conference

[edit] Embedded skill sets

  • able to use the screens, add slides to the HUDs
    • Give each trainee a copy of the Slide Viewer, so they can build their own slide shows in inventory, and install them as needed to use for display.
  • able to use audio in conjunction with NMC Campus, such as Skype or TeamSpeak, as well as arrange with NMC for live audio streams
  • know and help others understand the rules about rezzing; faculty are allowed to rez on the grass "downstairs"
  • Some very simple scripts that can be attached to objects
    • script to lauch a URL when object touched
    • creating a drop box (get script from SimTeach)
    • script that allows an object to dispense a hotecard
  • can place videos & audio into land parcels/screens (which means we need to figure out how to let them do that. I think now you need to be an estate manager to do that. We may be able to assign them rights to just certain parts, however.)
  • create notecards, hyperlinked, with images and Landmarks
    • packaging a notecard as an item
  • taking photographs, making movies

[edit] Pedagogical Exploitation in SL

  • modelling the unique added-value(s) of SL into the faculty certificate program - so we hit the 'WHY' very explicitly and clearly
    • provide the option to do the self-study guides both individually and as a small collaborative self-study group - SL is inherently a social space so need to make this explicit (has implications for demonstrated proficiencies too like joining a group)

[edit] Education-related Tools

  • on NMC Campus
    • audio channel on NMC land
    • video screens
  • elsewhere (free/commercial)
    • free portable (stay with the avatar) resources at ICT library (talk with Milosun to network / duplicate some of these resources like the disciplinary notecards within the NMC campus library)
    • commercial resources linked within ICT library
      • THiNC

[edit] Resources/Setup Required

  • listserv - NMC-SL ? or maybe Google Groups which allows people to choose between web/email access/digest modes
  • SL group - NMCfaculyadjunct (not the right name but along these lines) - they can use this to work collaboratively if they wish and grad from this group into NMCfaculty group
    • NMC Faculty In Training
    • NMC Junior Faculty
    • NMC Campus Trainee
  • opml of key RSS feeds ? - NMC del.icio.us, blog and flickr feeds, other blogs, podcasts, machima/screencasts/vodcasts about SL e.g. Secrets of Second Life - excellent short screencasts aimed at SL noobies (although there is the case of perpetual noobie in SL, like perpetual beta!) Might be able to easily do this via SuprGlu -- also see general intro videos about SL
  • specific tag (del.icio.us/flickr) for resources for this group e.g. NMC_campus_faculty
  • we should make a gateway to our resources -- where they (and we!) can link to all the sprawling wiki, blog, del.icio.us, flickr, and other content that relates to NMC Campus (Alan thinks this wiki should serve that function).
  • THiNC press for NMC Campus (place in Library ground floor?)
