Basically, you can create your own groups via the SL Edit Menu, select Groups..., and click the "create" button. You will have to provide some information for the group.
The hardest part may be deciding on the unique name for the group. You will have to decide if you want to add your students to the group yourself, or to check the bottom box that allows anyone to enroll in the group.
Not also from the information in the link above, creating a group is going to cost L$100. A class group is very valuable, since you can send Instant messages to everyone via the group, as well as set up proposals to vote on. You also get to create the group titles for the leaders of your group (e.g. "Teacher", "Big Dog", "Honcho") and group members ("students", "learners", etc...)
