[edit] Ideas for Using the NMC Campus

The NMC Campus was build out by March, 2006, but it is just a place and there is some risk of the Field of Dreams Syndrome, hoping, "if we build it, they will come." To draw people into the NMC Campus, we would like to see a rich variety of activities taking place here, both formally and informally.

Therefore, this part of the Campus Guide is a scratchpad for ideas, so as you explore Second Life and the NMC Campus, please try to share some ways others might be able to use it (people planning to bring classes or hold meetings here are also advised to review Suggestions for Meeting on Campus.

We are excited if you do arrange for an activity here, and we ask that you add the event to our Campus Calendar (see notes for using the calendar). Even better, we would be even more excited if you were willing to write a small article on your activities we could publish in the NMC Campus Observer.

[edit] Bring in Invited Guests

Bring in some sepakers, presenters, experts to do lead discussions, run presentations, etc. Possibilities we have suggested so far include

Jenny Levine, The Shifted Librarian in area of games and libraries. Perhaps connect with World Book Fair July 4- Aug 4? See Also Press Announcement, Project Gutenberg,World Public Library
Bernie Dodge, San Diego State University, teaches graduate level class in Educational gaming
Invite in some of the artists who created our sculptures to give tours, demos, etc, and talk about art in SL

[edit] Set Up Support Systems

Staff a library reference desk with volunteers to help students/faculty with research
Have people on hand on a regular/scheduled basis in the Sandbox to help people learn how to create things in Second Life

[edit] Hold Meetings

Schedule meetings for remote participants; use any part of the Campus, small groups can gather in the Library or in the Board Room, but for that matter, you could meet by the Mediation area or on top of the mountain.

Ask our friends fron Electric Sheep Company to lead some building workshops in the Sandbox; perhaps:
- Basic Object Creation
- The Art of textures
- Simple Scripting
- Drop in sessions- what do you want to build? and we try to offer suggestions

[edit] Informal Groups / Clubs / Activities

Regular Meetup times/places for special interest groups? e.g. a coffee hour sort of thing

Second Life Field Trips- someone who has found an interesting area "off campus" leads a trip to explore a new Second Life place. Groups could meet on Campus, go explore, and return to discuss the trip.

Photo Club - regular gathering for people to show and share photos taken "in" Second Life (Alan is interested in leading this one).

Build a community of learners. Raising the flag does not work. But a community can create its own momentum.
