[edit] Teachers Buzz Session 3 Summary
(Sep 18, 2006, 6:00 PM SLT) summarized from full transcript
- Audio via Skype was less than desirable, not everyone could hear and we experienced feedback -- the workable way is for moderator to mute all and designate who can speak. Audio recorded from first 33 minutes http://media.nmc.org/sl/audio/buzz/buzz-060918.mp3
- SL issues, several outages this week, passwords exploited- again stability issues challenge educators. Backup strategies?
- web casting
- skype/chat, Breeze, Learning Times
- SL as a secondary meeting place (internet site as primary)
- alternative platforms Never Winter Nights
- create self directed activities rather than synchronous activities (Snowbell Tiger at Virreal Land)
- students keep record of in word activities (log?)
- first step of digital production is avatar creation/design
- Problems also this week with creating multiple accounts for faculty/staff; it appears a browser cookie may limit the number to 10
- Demo accounts are handy, but some were unusable after the password breach (lost track of the question response needed to reset a password)
- issue: trouble "selling" SL to your students or administration because of the "eye bleach" (SL sleaze) factor?
- private / semi-private islands; other places have tension between desire for safe place and wanting open-ness ("too many restrictions takes away from the essence of what SL is")
- "Don't private islands lend themselves to the balkanization of Second Life? "
- restrict creation/script abilities (10 minute return on any created prim; scripts disabled)
- parcel costs are perceived as high by many acadmic admins.
- hold sessions in a sandbox where focus is on learning, then branched ou explorations
- "It helps to have set objectives, a one hour maximum timeframe, and some goals to complete, then a way of evaluating the session and refining it."
