There's been quite an active back and forth this week on the Second Life Educators (SLED) listserv as people advocate for and against the desire to be able to render a full functioning web content on an object in Second Life.
I too have wishes for more connectivity between the virtual world and the web world, especially to be able to dynamically texture a prim with an image via a URL. Oh give me an easy flickr on a prim, and ... more » »

The Friday schedule for the NMC Symposium on Creativity in Second Life opened with a very special presentation by SynapticWizard Karas (aka Ted M. Kahn) of DesignWorlds for Learning, Inc. but also the very first NMC Fellow. Ted brought us a classic theoretial concept of Synectics into the virtual space through this session and his activities.
Synectics, Everywhere and a Virtual Museum of the Future: Educreation in Second Life
This session will give a very brief overview of the history of ... more » »

After an unbelievable 8 day stretch of events, the NMC Symposium on Creativity in Second Life ended today following a morning and afternoon of more sessions on scripting, improvisation techniques, avatars... We had great closing panel session on "Creativity and Education in SL" (despite our challenges with audio, the show went on).
Ths Symposium closed with remarks by Larry Pixel (aka Larry Johnson) highlighting the profound experience we all had this week, especially because of the creative spirit of not just ... more » »

Videos about Second Life provide a powerful way to communicate the experience to the uninitiated and are great resources to have available for being able to talk about projects or reasons to be in SL. Eve more so, the creation of video within Second Life is an extremely creative form of expression, and luckily, there are many machinima artists out there who are sharing their works.
We've been tracking a number of videos and put together a playlist of just YouTube ... more » »

We've been eagerly awaiting the capability of voice communication here on NMC Campus, going back to March when we did some beta tests with an early version on the beta grid. As many know, our typical communication in SL is text based chat/IM, and any audio communication has required use of outside software with honestly un-even results.
The new voice capability is built into the SL client, so you can just talk using your computer's microphone, and you can hear other ... more » »

A few weeks ago we shared about a nifty new web video concept where uploaded video is set up so speakers of other languages can add localized captions. We are still impressed with the very 2.0ish idea that dotsub offers -- user generated video captions.
In our example, the folks at dotsub seeded our NMC Campus Seriously Engaging video with English captions from the original video (they did this in a very quick time frame, FYI). Just checking in today, ... more » »

If you visualize prims while driving around town or if you have ever thought about alt-zooming from the back of the theater, this video may help you appreciate how RL could be:

The July/August issue of Technology Review features a comprehensive story on Second Earth, where it not only highlights many compelling regions in Second Life, but looks more broadly at the future, which may in fact combine the data and rich media of Google Earth with the high level engagement of Second Life.
The World Wide Web will soon be absorbed into the World Wide Sim: an environment combining elements of Second Life and Google Earth.
The article by Wade Roush is ... more » »

Today at the 2007 NMC Summer Conference, live from Indianapolis, Angela Thomas, the RL avatar of Anya Ixchel, wowed an audience with her presentation that painted a vivid picture of the notions of "play" and identity in digital spaces. We did what we could to bring the experience into Second Life, with a live audio stream.... mostly live- due to some technical challenges, the stream kept cutting out.
Pleasure, Play, Participation, and Promise
We also had the slides available in world ... more » »

It becomes more apparent every day how much Second Life is becoming an international environment, and one, in places, where English is not the primary language. We've been following with some interest a new web site, dotSUB, that takes an interesting approach to ultimately add multi-lingual captions to video-- allowing visitors to the site to add translations of the captions into any of the numerous other languages supported on the site.. or, was call it, "user generated video captioning".
They have ... more » »
