The calendar link on this site has expanded from just the NMC Campus events (which is still viewable as its own calendar) to include all of the education events on the SLEDevents public calendar.
We now list now all events shared by colleagues on the Second Life Educators listserv, and we all owe Bruce Sommerville a big round of thanks for the task of keeping that calendar up to date.
So if you are looking for educational events in Second Life, ... more » »

Oh what a sloppy blogger I have been! We've had this awesome resource that was released in November, the 2007 NMC Conference Proceedings which has more than a few papers of interest to those interested in Second Life and virtual worlds in general.
The papers in the proceedings were authored by presenters at the 2007 NMC Summer Conference in Indianapolis. Participants at the conference voted on sessions that ought to be invited to author papers, and the final product represents ... more » »

Want to tell the world about how your educational project or course makes use of virtual worlds? If your organization is an NMC Member, you can create a Member Spotlight on the NMC website; Spotlights are featured on the NMC home page on a rotating, randomly selected basis. Whether or not you belong to the NMC, you can also place a link to your course or project that uses Second Life, Wonderland, or Croquet on Media Grid's Immersive Education page.

On Monday Feb 4 at the Teachers Buzz on the NMC Labs sim, we were treated to a fantastic selection of useful gadgets for learning and teaching in Second Life.
Willow Shenlin got us off to a great start by sharing her bilingual dictionary modified from an SL Glossary. This is keyword searchable by typing in to chat and it also provides a link to an mp3 file so you can hear the word being spoken! The one she ... more » »

We are excited to announce that starting Monday, NMC Campus will be a partner site for tuning into the weekly Metanomics events that bring together many of the thought leaders in virtual worlds.
“Metanomics” refers to the study of the business and policy aspects of the “metaverse” of virtual worlds. Metanomics can focus on issues arising within virtual worlds, such as how developers manage the economy of a game world (like World of Warcraft), or how residents of virtual worlds ... more » »

it's been quite some time since the NMC Symposium on the Evolution of Communication, held way back in early December, 2007. It was such a huge event, its taken us this long to organize all the resources (please activate your avatar's nodding head in agreement animation).
Below we provide some of the highlights, mainly links to the archived video of the sessions. These videos were archived from our set up that provided live video streams to our overflow sims, but required ... more » »

If you were an educator, wouldn’t you dream of taking your students on exciting field trips but the location is across the country, or even across the ocean? How about a holodeck in a virtual world where, with the click of a mouse, you can be in New York, Chicago, or visiting Chateau Villandry on the Loire river?

Thanks to a blog post from Nancy White, we've just come across a fabulous thought piece on Second Life by David Sibbet, who lives in SL as Sunseed Bardeen. His retrospective is an important written work (it is a 40 page illustrated PDF) that finally adds some signal to all the noise we see in mainstream media coverage of Second Life.
If you are not familiar with David's work, start now! As founder of the The Grove Consultants International, he brings ... more » »
