We heard via the grapevine that Lyr Lobo aka Dr. Cynthia Calongne is being nominated for the Association of Virtual Worlds' 2010 Person of the Year.

I was sitting around in my office chair wondering what I might be doing this weekend, especially with Halloween landing nicely on a Friday. Hmmmm, there must be something going on, but what?

A bit of time has gone by since the 2008 NMC Summer Conference at Princeton, but we wanted to make sure we jotted a few notes on the closing plenary by Henry Jenkins- an inspirational presentation on What Would Herman Melville Say to Soulja Boy?: Remix Culture and the New Media.

Look for two events coming up tied to the International Day for Sharing Life Stories, which is Friday, May 16, 2008. During the day, you can be in a Second Life story circle! Any group in SL can get self-organized and participate.
In each story circle, each teller will prompt the next teller the American Indian way, by handing him/her a talking stick.

On Friday April 25, NMC CEO Larry Johnson (or as we know him in Second Life, Larry Pixel) was a guest interviewee for the Metanomics series, the weekly live show that takes place in, and is broadcast live from Second Life.

This Friday, April 25, will be a special Metanomics interview featuring the NMC's own, our CEO Larry Johnson (who is the real real avatar of Larry Pixel). Like all Metanomics sessions, this takes place somewhere in Second Life, but is live video streamed to the NMC location on Outreach.

Tonight we hosted the opening recepetion for the NMC Symposium on Mashups, one of the NMC's Online Symposia -- this one itself a mashup of venues between web sessions in Adobe Connect and 3D sessions taking place at the NMC Conference Center in Second Life.
Some 25 avatars showed up to meet and talking about mashups- assembling at the Muriel Cooper Coliseum on thre NMC Conference Center sim:

Today the New Media Consortium (NMC) announced a $250,000 two-year collaboration with Sun Microsystems to launch the Open Virtual Worlds Project, an effort that is aimed at making it easier to learn, work, and exchange ideas in virtual space. The project will develop a range of standards-based, portable open-source educational spaces, content, and objects, and use them to extend Sun Microsystems’s open source Project Darkstar and Project Wonderland virtual world platforms.
