We are so excited to share the work of one of the participants at this week's NMC Symposium on Creativity on Second Life. Calisto Encinal (aka James Abraham, Glendale Community College) participated in the Machinima Studio Session, where he created Calisto Meets His Maker, a creative look at not just a virtual world, but.... well, I don't want to give any of it away. Just watch! Click To Play As Calisto notes in his blog: I kicked around ideas for a couple of days, ... more » »

Symposium on Creativity: Live Music With Chronic Skronski

CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Aug 16, 2007 10:46am

As a special, fun event, yesterday evening we had a social activity held at a lofty 600 meters above NMC Campus, a new NMC Faculty Club designed by Stella Costello. We were fortunate to have live music performed for us by Chronic Skronski. And to add to the atmosphere, we made use of Lyr Lobo's Dance Machine to smoothly choreograph the avatar audience (this is the same device she has demonstrated twice in her sessions on Dancin' with Wolves: Lyr Lobo's ... more » »

Symposium on Creativity: Wednesday Highlights

CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Aug 16, 2007 10:35am

The Wednesday schedule for the NMC Symposium on Creativity in Second Life was deliberately made more open, mostly to allow for possible downtimes for SL updates (and there was one in the morning), but also to give folks a breathing break! It's been an exciting schedule, and maybe a bit over the top for those needing to get some Rl balance. But the NMC Conference Center had some action, people were over in the Studio areas tinkering on projects, etc. By ... more » »

CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Aug 13, 2007 09:00pm

It's been about 12 hours since the first full day of the NMC Symposium on Creativity launched, and what a day its been. Catching up on the activity is going to be a big job, mostly left for "later", but we wanted to make sure to share the video archive of Larry Pixel's (aka Larry Johnson) keynote session on Why Creativity Matters. Keynote video [46.9 Mb Quicktime]. Also available on Google Video and blip.tv. And see below for the remarks as ... more » »

Symposium on Creativity Opened Today!

CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Aug 13, 2007 12:15am

After months of planning, and watching the fabulous builds unfold created by the NMC Virtual Worlds team, it was exciting to see all the activity, enthusiasm for todays opening of the week-long Symposium on Creativity in Second Life. That's not to say it was perfect (This is Second Life after all, where your world just may crash on you- 5 times) -- right at the opening of the Studio Sessions, no one was able to teleport anywhere, so folks could ... more » »

Interview with Ann Enigma

CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Aug 10, 2007 05:51pm

Today I met up with Ann Enigma, or in real life, Hilary Mason from Johnson and Wales University. We chatted on NMC Campus at Research Park, enjoying the peaceful serenity inside the Biosphere dome. Listen to our audio recorded interview (we talked using the new Voice Chat, which was flawless!). Interview with Ann Enigma Ann chatted a bit about her background and her early interest in computers (a self proclaimed and proud "geek"). The we talked about her entry into Second Life ... more » »

CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : May 12, 2007 08:48pm

Last Thursday, we were fortunate to have Second Life artist Filthy Fluno visit NMC Campus, where he spoke to 20+ audience via live audio. The purpose of this event was to share the process by which he created a RL painting commissioned by NMC, called "Search For Excellence." New Machinima! Art of Stella Costello

CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : May 8, 2007 10:12am

The NMC has been proud to offer an active series of art exhibits and events over the last few months, including the current one featuring the sculptures of Stella Costello that is available on the NMC "Service" sim. They are well worth a visit to take in the mixture of humor and nods to the classics cast into the form of Second Life. We were fortunate to gain from the video skills and talent in Susi Spicoli who created this ... more » »

Thanks Totally Vavoom for doing a write-up for last night's NMC Campus Teachers Buzz session, where we aimed to provide some guidance to some educators new to Second Life participating with us via a pre-conference session of the TCC Online conference. CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Mar 21, 2007 03:12pm

This morning, as part of the NMC Online Conference on the Convergence of Web Culture and Video (an old style flat web format conference) NMC hosted a virtual reception in Second Life. We met in the red carpeted lobby of the new Machinima Studio building, had a go with the people tagging ice breaker activity, and then moved to a stylish new ballroom where Johnny99 Gumshoe streamed a set of his rockin' guitar jams. Johnny99 at NMC Online Conference Reception Nancy and ... more » »
