David Wilson is the Coordinator of Public Opinion Initiatives for the University of Delaware’s Center for Political Communication. He is an Assistant Professor in Political Science in 2006, previously serving as a Senior Statistical Consultant for The Gallup Organization.

He will discuss the foundations of public opinion polling, and the costs and benefits of the “democratization” of polling information. Technology has allowed for a proliferation of public opinion polls. In some ways this enhances Democracy by giving Americans a voice to promote their general will, but it can also be dangerous because the overwhelming majority of Americans are ill-informed about civics, government, and politics. In addition, the advances in media and information via the web have brought about new “elites” who frame issues in ways that are not always genuine. This raises questions about the extent to which elected officials should listen to an ill-informed citizenry, and how much faith should be placed in the mass media as an fair and balanced information source.
The series is a live simulcast of both national speakers and local UD faculty during the entire fall term.  Questions will be taken from our SL audience
