Help Demo NMC Social Sandbox
CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Feb 26, 2009 10:20pm
As described earlier this month in our interview with CJ Carnot and Stella Costello, the NMC team has been busy making many changes to all of the sims in NMC Campus, but especially the core, the one, the original NMC Campus.
We are asking anyone available tomorrow to help us demo and test a new feature. At the core of NMC Campus is our “60 minute sandbox” a place for doing quick demos and sharing “stuff”. We plan to make this the informal gathering place and central core for getting to other locations in our lands.
What we have added is a new detector that locates avatars nearby, and puts the image that is in their SL profile (if it exists) on a screen:

And if there is more than one avatar (testing alone is so… lonely) the screen will shuffle through the list.
This is kind of neat, but the real value is we have other screens scattered around the main landing spots of most other NMC Campus islands, so from anywhere, you can look at the sign, and see who is hanging aroung at the NMC Campus Social Sandbox, e.g. (this is a mockup), here I am standing on NMC Orientation, and I look on the screen to see my good buddy Desideria Stockton’s picture, so if I want to go hang out with her (and I do!) I can click the screen for a map link/teleport to the sandbox.

This is where I need some help from the community. I am doing a short SL demo tomorrow (Friday, Feb 27) at Baylor University, and want to show them how this works when there are a number of people near the social sandbox. So if you are available for say 20 minutes starting around 2:10 PM PST (check local time) please just go hang out at the new NMC Campus Center.
I will first enter SL at a remote location to show people at Baylor how it works, and then will teleport over where perhaps a few people can interact with us on voice or text chat.
Thanks for your help. If you have never edited your SL profile or forgot how to add your picture, please see Torley’s video as a guide:

[...] In the middle I jumped down the rabbit hole into Second Life, for a quick introduction to the NMC Orientation Island, and then to test an avatar tool we are using for our new Social Media Sandbox [...]
