Opening Reception For NMC Symposium on Mashups

Tonight we hosted the opening recepetion for the NMC Symposium on Mashups, one of the NMC’s Online Symposia — this one itself a mashup of venues between web sessions in Adobe Connect and 3D sessions taking place at the NMC Conference Center in Second Life.

Some 25 avatars showed up to meet and talking about mashups- assembling at the Muriel Cooper Coliseum on thre NMC Conference Center sim:

Beyond getting to know where folks were fun, we rolled out two activities. The first is a variation of the Human Graph where individuals line up to create a human “bar chart” in response to a question. So for our first round, we asked people to line up according to how long they have been in Second Life (< 1 month, 1 month to a year, 1-2 years, and more than 2). Everyone cooperated, but we found that its hard to get a bunch of avatars to stand still!

Our chat shows an audience more skewed toward experience:

We then did a round of “Make Friends for Lindens” where peple had to locate one of the NMS staff, Jauquin Menentos, who was perched on a mountain, and the first 5 people to friend him got l$500.

Set up on the music channel was a collection of music from ccMixter the mashup site that allows users to sample around files store on the site and then to create new music, all of which is Creative Commons licensed.

The next Avatar graph question was about experience with mashups, and responses from “none” to “I make ‘em”. One group got cleaver and rezzed a line of cubes for people to sit on.

And when we were done, we had this chart that shows a pretty wide mix of experience across the first 3 bars:

We had another rounf of “Make Friends for Lindens” and then closed out with a showing of a set of recut movie trailers and other mashup videos.
