NMC Launches Open Virtual Worlds Project

Today the New Media Consortium (NMC) announced a $250,000 two-year collaboration with Sun Microsystems to launch the Open Virtual Worlds Project, an effort that is aimed at making it easier to learn, work, and exchange ideas in virtual space. The project will develop a range of standards-based, portable open-source educational spaces, content, and objects, and use them to extend Sun Microsystems’s open source Project Darkstar and Project Wonderland virtual world platforms. If your organization is an NMC Member, you can create a Member Spotlight on the NMC website; Spotlights are featured on the NMC home page on a rotating, randomly selected basis. The February 18 Teachers Buzz session took place underwater... and in a prehistoric world... and in hell... and in heaven. All those places were created by students in Michael Wright's (Mrags Writer in Second Life) Concepts and Issues in New Media course at Otis College of Art and Design. Metanomics Session from Emory Virtual Worlds Conference

This week's Metanomics session will be live broadcast from one of the sessions at the Emory University Conference, "Virtual Worlds and New Realities in Commerce, Politics and Society.". As we now do regularly, you can join the educator crowd on NMC Campus to watch the live video stream, and chat about the topics. Gadgets Galore! That’s the Buzz!

On Monday Feb 4 at the Teachers Buzz on the NMC Labs sim, we were treated to a fantastic selection of useful gadgets for learning and teaching in Second Life. Willow Shenlin got us off to a great start by sharing her bilingual dictionary modified from an SL Glossary. The next NMC Campus Teachers Buzz session is going to be wild and chaotic, even more so than normal. We put out a call for educators to bring some educational SL gadgets they have created, ones they would be willing to share with other educators.
