Today the New Media Consortium (NMC) announced a $250,000 two-year collaboration with Sun Microsystems to launch the Open Virtual Worlds Project, an effort that is aimed at making it easier to learn, work, and exchange ideas in virtual space. The project will develop a range of standards-based, portable open-source educational spaces, content, and objects, and use them to extend Sun Microsystems’s open source Project Darkstar and Project Wonderland virtual world platforms.

Want to tell the world about how your educational project or course makes use of virtual worlds? If your organization is an NMC Member, you can create a Member Spotlight on the NMC website; Spotlights are featured on the NMC home page on a rotating, randomly selected basis. Whether or not you belong to the NMC, you can also place a link to your course or project that uses Second Life, Wonderland, or Croquet on Media Grid's Immersive Education page.

The February 18 Teachers Buzz session took place underwater... and in a prehistoric world... and in hell... and in heaven. All those places were created by students in Michael Wright's (Mrags Writer in Second Life) Concepts and Issues in New Media course at Otis College of Art and Design. Each environment was created by one class working as a team, and each team had just 13 hours to complete the project. The results are spectacular.

This week's Metanomics session features a panel discussion on the press and virtual worlds. Join other educators on NMC Campus to tune into this session... and we are interested in finding ways to make these weekly events focused on the education perspective, and ideas?

This week's Metanomics session will be live broadcast from one of the sessions at the Emory University Conference, "Virtual Worlds and New Realities in Commerce, Politics and Society.".
As we now do regularly, you can join the educator crowd on NMC Campus to watch the live video stream, and chat about the topics. We are not sure if the whole conference is being live streamed; this is the only session we have been made aware of.

On Monday Feb 4 at the Teachers Buzz on the NMC Labs sim, we were treated to a fantastic selection of useful gadgets for learning and teaching in Second Life.
Willow Shenlin got us off to a great start by sharing her bilingual dictionary modified from an SL Glossary. This is keyword searchable by typing in to chat and it also provides a link to an mp3 file so you can hear the word being spoken! The one she ... more » »

The next NMC Campus Teachers Buzz session is going to be wild and chaotic, even more so than normal. We put out a call for educators to bring some educational SL gadgets they have created, ones they would be willing to share with other educators. We will meet on NMC Labs, our sandbox, where you should see lots of "Stuff" put out Monday, and pretty much it will be like the county fair.

Join us again Monday for another Metanomics session you can attend on NMC Campus. This week, Robert Bloomfield and Metanomics will host Robert Gehorsam, President of Forterra Systems Inc.
