Today witnessed an amazing turnout for Stephane Zugzwang's demo and release of the Virtual Reality Room tool for educators, hosted today at Learning on NMC Campus.
We had a capacity crowd of 73 for the 10:00 AM demo, and we got so many messages and IMs from people knocked out to the next sim, that Stephane agreed to provide another demo at 12:00pm where we saw an additional 41 eager avatars show up.

If you were an educator, wouldn’t you dream of taking your students on exciting field trips but the location is across the country, or even across the ocean? How about a holodeck in a virtual world where, with the click of a mouse, you can be in New York, Chicago, or visiting Chateau Villandry on the Loire river?

We had an excellent session this morning over at the Babbage Amphitheater on NMC Conference Center- MediaGridAaron Oh presented on how grid computing applies to virtual worlds, and the work the Immersive Education project is doing to provide connections and shared access to multiple virtual worlds.
We had 54 attendees, including ones from the U.K., Belgium, Spain, and all over the US.

Yesterday was part two of our series on Challenges & Solutions to Teaching in Second Life featuring students who had taken Lisa Dawley's course last semester at Boise State University. Getting started was a challenge in itself as the Second Life Grid was down until 12:30PM PST, so we had a late start. But wow, as soon as the grid was open, people logged in quickly.

As previously noted last December, the Media Grid hosted an Immersive Education Day at Harvard University (see details on event) as a leadup for another related event, the Boston Digital Media Summit taking place January 12-13.

We had a great turnout (30+) at the Muriel Cooper Coliseum for the first of a 2-part discussion on Challenges & Solutions for Teaching in SL. Our panel in the middle of the "ring" were students this past semester to from Mali Young (aka Lisa Dawley)'s EDTECH 597: Teaching & Learning in Second Life class (Boise State University, EDTECH Island). We have a fantastic, free event for educators going on today and tomorrow on NMC Campus. As first announced last month, Lisa Dawley has arranged for students in her EDTECH 597: Teaching & Learning in Second Life class (Boise State University, EDTECH Island) this past semester to present their findings on the Challenges & Solutions for Teaching in Second Life.

The NMC Campus Teachers Buzz sessions took a holiday break last month (we have word they were spotted causing trouble on a beach in the Carribean) but returned today with a great meetup on NMC Orientation to talk about improving the experience for new (and not so new) SL users.
We meet at the sim's landing point, halfway between the basic (5 minute quick) orientation, and the longer, more in-depth orientation in the area that looks like the mission district. I ... more » »

Last night was the premiere of the latest performance of DanCoyote Antonelli's ZeroG Skydancers- now in their third season in Second Life, the show has evolved even far beyond what was ground breaking territory with the new show called "Second Spring".
Second Spring is a completely live story performance-- the SkyDancers perform in-flight choreography without the benefit of animations or gestures of any kind following cues given in real time on a private IM channel from DanCoyote. He ... more » »

Ah, a fresh new year, and we are pleased to have the next four NMC Campus Teachers Buzz Sessions scheduled in advance. These meetups are open to anyone interested in using SL for teaching and learning, and range from open discussions on topics like avatars & identity or play/work aspects of virtual worlds to tours of places such as Jokaydia, NOAA, Timeline History of Earth and Life and even celebrating Halloween at the British Gothic Literature sim.
