Challenges & Solutions for Teaching in Second Life

CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Dec 10, 2007 02:20pm

Yes, we are aiming to get out our January event notifications early, as we know those of you in the real world have to deal with the challenges of holiday time traffic, shopping, cooking… all of those tasks which are much easier here in the virtual world!

But we have a great event lined up for early January. Lisa Dawley has arranged for students in her EDTECH 597: Teaching & Learning in Second Life class (Boise State University, EDTECH Island) this past semester to present their findings on the Challenges & Solutions for Teaching in Second Life:

Join us for this 2-part session to discuss challenges and SOLUTIONS for teaching in Second Life. The panelists include faculty, K-12 teachers, and instructional designers who’ve been working on EDTECH island for the last semester to study best practice in virtual world teaching. Learn about concrete solutions and tips they’ve identified to challenges such as facilitating new users, universal access, working with voice and text modalities, and inworld assessment. Goodies provided!

We have scheduled this over two days to accommodate the schedules of the panelists (all of whom are volunteering their time… after the class has ended!). So this will take place:

January 8, 2008, 6:00 PM PST (check for local time) with panelists:

  • Chris Haskell
  • Jeremy Koester
  • Ric Robinson
  • Salli DiBartolo
  • Alice Bedard-Voorhees
  • Jeff Pitcher
  • Will Ober

and
January 9, 2008, 12:00 PM PST (check for local time) with panelists:

  • Eric Miner
  • Helen Farley canceled due to illness
  • Mauri Collins
  • Ann Jeffrey
  • Randall Holmes

All of these sessions will take place at the NMC Conference Center (68,209,22), in the Muriel Cooper Coliseum.

We are excited to bring together all this expertise, and be sure to read ahead of time the summary of this class’s findings so you can be ready with questions or comments.

This sounds like a great event.
I’m new to SL and am very interested in teaching one of my classes in SL in Fall 2008. Sounds like this will be very helpful.
    Look forward to attending.
