The Singing Professor

CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Oct 26, 2007 03:42pm

Here at the Campus Observer, we have enjoyed watching Professor Beliveau’s experience in Second Life — going way back to the beginning when he refused to give his credit card and tried to make it by scrounging casino money ;-)

The Professor has done a tremendous amount of serious work in Second Life, and he has authored several articles for us (as well as presentations) sharing his experiences of teaching undergraduate field research courses entirely in Second Life.

It was great when we heard that the Professor got some press from his Rl local paper, see “He’s Virtually Famous” where the PJStar describes the Professor’s sidelight as a musical performer in Second Life.

In real life, Ed Lamoureux is associate professor of Bradley University’s multimedia program.

But in virtual life, Lamoureux is known as Professor Beliveau or simply The Professor - a hip, muscular balding avatar, or online character, who sports shades and a mean guitar.

He plays weekly at the Mystic Hill Swing and Dance Club, one of many clubs located in Second Life, a virtual online community.

The Professor is an incredible giving person as well, typifying the education community in Second Life. When I asked my contacts for some people willing to be logged on for Second Life demos for my RL presentations in Australia he volunteered and was available for all three of them!

So yesterday, my audience here in Brisbane got a chance to hear (really hear, via voice) The Professor:

And here is the great ending to the story. One of the questions from the audience was from SL Guru Deckah Mah, who let the folks there know that she was starting a performance stage and schedule on Terra Incognita, and she asked the professor if he would be willing to sing there.

And of course, he said yes.

The Professor rocks!
