GCCAz Launched Last Week

In the Backlog of Back Blog Department, I forgot to mention a nice sim opening last week for GCCAz, the home of Glendale Community College, home of colleagues at my previous job. They had a celebration on the GCCAz Student Union in Second Life as well as demos at the college’s High Tech Center.

Among videos screened at the party:

* NMC’s Seriously Engaging An Overview of SL and the New Media Consortium
* Calisto Meets His Maker (created by GCC’s own Calisto Encinal
* Watch the Worlds by Robbie Dingo- An incredible recreation of Van Gogh’s Starry Night set to Don McLean’s Vincent
* The Making of Susan Vega’s Second Life Guitar

And it featured live music from SL musician Maximillion Kleene:

According to host Calisto Encinal:

About 65 unique avatars visited GCCAz’s Grand Opening celebration on Friday, September 7th. The dancing was lively and the music outstanding with the help of Maximilian Kleene. Max played live music into SL for the enjoyment of all. Invited guests included several Maricopa educators and NMC representatives. While the avatars inhabited SL, about ten humans gathered in HT2-149 to celebrate. Several faculty members and two students meandered in both worlds while several others looked over their shoulders. The party included food, fireworks and some free gifts for all who visited. By all accounts the party was a success. We were able to bring some attention to this new technology and inspire others to investigate the possibilities at their own institutions.

You can visit GCCAz at http://slurl.com/secondlife/GCCAz/17/222/22/ and we are nudging Calisto and colleagues (hint wink elbow nudge) to host an upcoming NMC Teacher’s Buzz there.

    Hello,
My name is Sean. I am a current student at GCCaz and i would like to know how to access the GCCAZ island that has been developed. Futhermore, I would like to know how much this would cost the college (it does not have to be exact just an idea). Thank you very much and i look forward to a speedy response.

    Sean,

To access GCCaz, you will need to, if not already, have created a Second Life account (free) at http://secondlife.com

The link in the article above helps you find its location in Second Life:

For more about GCCaz and answers to your cost question, you really should contact the people there running the project- Jim Daugherty in the Innovation Center and/or James Abraham, faculty member
