Why Creativity Matters (SLCC 2007)

As the closing keynote for the Education Track at SLCC 2007, NMC CEO Larry Johnson presented an expanded version of his talk at the NMC Symposium on Creativity with his self-admitted optimistic view of “What Creativity Matters”.

Via reports from in-world respondents, the audio stream was working (whew!), but we did manage to grab a recording — see below (note that the house audio volume was very low). Thanks to our SL colleagues who shared the chat transcript from the folks gathered at NMC Campus to listen to this talk.

Why Creativity Matters (SLCC 2007)

I believe, deeply, that these are the factors that make Second Life such a place of boundless creativity.

The tools are here, the media available are richly expressive, and the residents are absolutely receptive to seeing what can be done with them.

It is a learning space like no other we’ve seen. A creative space where a dancer can dance, a sculptor can create, and a teacher can teach in ways that are only bounded by his or her imagination.

A space where attempts do not have to be successful to be seen as valuable — a place where the journey is paramount. Discovery is the destination.

A space where it is the natural state of affairs for people to learn from and share with each other.

A space where creativity matters.

MANY thanks for the use of NMC for the weekend! Our inworld participants had a blast, and we realized, in leaving our thank you, that creativty matters for so many reasons, but one reason it matters most is to share kindness. We can be kinder when we are creative!
