The New Media Consortium (NMC) and its Second Life unit NMC Virtual Worlds have agreed to serve as the lead sponsor for the Education Track at the Second Life Community Convention (SLCC) in Chicago this year, as an expression of gratitude for all the support we have received this year from the education community in Second Life.
As part of our sponsorship, we plan to sponsor three registrations from educators active in Second Life who would like to ... more » »

HooooooOooo
Originally uploaded by Ravenelle.
It's the end of an NMC staff meeting in Second Life, and we issue a big, group "HooooooOooo" from (left to right), CDB Barkley, Stella Costello, Ravenelle Zugzwang, and Larry Pixel (who seems to have missed the call to gesture ;-).
Do your meetings close with a cheer?

What's your dress code?
Mon 23 Jul saw a vibrant and open discussion with people sharing views on avatars, appearance and identity for teachers in Second Life.
Picking up on a recent (and recurring) discussion on the Second Life Educators list (SLED), the discussion was wide ranging covering the varied reasons for choice of avatar types and appearances. Some opted for having a least one alternate avatar to keep professional and personal separate. Whilst others opted for just one, but perhaps dressed ... more » »

After dabbling with assembling a collection of YouTube videos related to Second Life and education (based on a playlist), it struck me as limiting to do this only in YouTube, considering the number of other places to find web video. It was done this way on a lark as an experiment.
But in other venues, we have been exploring a new tool called Vodpod which allows you to assemble, categorize, tag videos from many different video sites. So here we unveil, ... more » »

At today's Posters on the Green Session we took advantage of one group of presenters from University of Maryland University College (UMUC) who were ready with their audio equipped Second Life clients and recorded this audio interview with Julie Commons (RL Gilliam), Kathleen Maloney (RL Puckett), LaTonya Carter (RL Dyer), and Joanna Foden (RL Zhang).
Their poster is on "Using Simulations To Enhance Online Learning" and provides an overview of three different online simulations created at UMUC for online programs:

Thanks to our presenters and guests who showed up for the opening of today's Poster on the Green event over at the Gonick Amphitheater on NMC Campus. These were versions of poster sessions initially seen at the 2007 NMC Summer Conference that we have brought into Second Life.
Today, we had a group of 20-30 show up at 1:00 PM SLT/PDT to take in the posters and talk to the presenters. The posters will remain on display through July 27- each ... more » »

We urge you to make sure sometime between now and Sunday you have a chance to explore one of the most innovative learning experiences in Second Life -- another fantastic project from Desideria Stockton and Eloise Pasteur. Stop reading this blog and go now to NMC Campus 5 (205,14 55)!
NMC was approached by Desi for a space to hold this build as described by Larry Pixel:

Our next NMC Campus Teacher's Buzz Session is Monday July 23 , 9:00am SLT/PDT (check your local time). This time we are planning a hopefully active discussion session format based on implications, decisions, and approaches for "dressing up" your avatar.
Image created with BigHugeLabs Mosaic Maker using mostly images flickr photos tagged "people" ** from the NMC Campus collection (download large version of mosaic, 1Mb JPEG). See below for the individual photo credits. Oops, so many pictures to choose, it ... more » »

This Friday, 5:00 PM SLT/PDT is the deadline to submit proposals for the August 12-18 Symposium on Creativity in Second Life, so we encourage you to cook up some interesting ideas to bring to what will be the NMC's first full online conference held entirely in Second Life.
Keep in mind, the focus on the event is providing opportunities for participants to learn new skills, techniques, ideas in a hands-on fashion, so our reviewers are looking for sessions that are ... more » »

Today I did a little bit of acting at the request of colleagues at Johns Hopkins University-- not strictly for my acting abilities, but because my avatar seemed to fit a role. Although a very short activity, it did bring home the power of being able to "play" different parts and roles in a virtual world.
The request from Kidkooley Xu (aka. Mike Reese) was:
I wanted to ask for your help in facilitating a SL demo for a university diversity ... more » »
