Pioneer or Settler?
CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Jun 9, 2007 11:31pm
We had some challenges live streaming Lyr Lobo (aka Cynthia Calongne) for her presentation from the 2007 NMC Summer Conference, but we did get an audio recording (see below) of here fantastic session. As usual, she infected the room with energy, and she wandered all over the space as she explained with infinite enthusiasm her way of “being” in Second Life.

A copy of her presentation is available via slideshare:
And the Ramapo video (6.1 Mb Quicktime) she used is viewable at:

The slide on Gartner Research’s study is wrong. Here is the actual statement from the study:
“STAMFORD, Conn., April 24, 2007 — By the end of 2011, 80 percent of active Internet users (and Fortune 500 enterprises) will have a “second life”, but not necessarily in Second Life, according to Gartner, Inc.”
Notice the “not necessarily in Seond Life” quote. It remains to be seen if Linden Lab and Second Life will even still be here in 2001.

Great observation, Stan, and thank you for catching it! To be precise, the slide should read “a second life” and not “in Second Life.” I’ll get the slide adjusted once our host returns. *smiles*
On that same thought, it is surprising to think that 80% of internet users would have a second life and be using a virtual world.
Keep on thinking those good thoughts! *grins*
