Second Lifing It On the Edge

You have to be an edge seeking heat seeker to rely n Second Life- its great when everything works, and will turn your hair white when it fails you. Fortunately, we have plenty of people who are affiliated or friends with NMC Campus who fly in the face of that uncertainty.
An example this week was Larry Pixel’s presentation using SL as a vehicle to present to a RL audience at SUNY when weather foiled his travel plans. With scant notice ahead of time, we saw a good sice audience assemble on NMC Campus at the Gonick amphitheater. Avatars settled in, the slide screens were loaded, Larry was sharp in a green tie, and the audio stream hummed alive….

But not more than a few slides on… disaster. The NMC Campus sim went down in a pile of burnt prims, and everyone was booted off.
Larry quickly regrouped, set up on a different location (the new Red Rocks styled theater on Research Park). People relogging in ended up on a “neighboring sim” named Korea (!!?), but through group IM and teleport passing, he was able to continue on in about 10-12 minute time frame.
And so, the show went on. It got a nice write up on SLNN.

The presentation moved to a new sim when NMC Campus crashed!
And more edge surrounds the NMC Summer Conference coming up in Indianapolis, as way way way past hindsight, we had scheduled morning and afternoon hands-on workshops on a Wednesday, when updates can occur and demolish any plans you had! We crossed our fingers, hoped for maybe a week delay, but Nooooo.
Not only will there be updates Wednesday, but they are major (voice is coming!) and will likely affect the beta grid as well, spoofing that backup plan.
So with some scrambling, brainstorming, and schedule re-allocation, we are going to be able to pull it off, along with some extra sessions squeezed in to give participants important in world experience. We’d hate to have pre-conference workshops on Building in SL with nothing but Powerpoint and YouTube videos, but now we will have t all
Here’s to the edge!
