We Birthed Our First Avatar
CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Apr 24, 2007 03:34pm
There’s some exciting work underway at NMC Campus. We are working with the Linden Lab API for account generation that will allow us to host our own new user account creation form on this web site, rather than going through the form at the main Second Life web site. When the account is created, a new avatar will not be sent to the Orientation Island with every other newbie, but they will go to our own custom Orientation Island.
So this is a big deal. It means we will be able to customize the Orientation process with special resources and tips aimed at an Educational audience. We’ll be able to provide landmarks to the best education destinations. And hopefully we can recruit a set of mentors interested in helping out those newly minted avatars.
But today, I got our registration script working (it communicates with Linden Lab to verify the avatar name is available, and then registers the avatar with them). After a few rounds of fixing errors, I was able to give birth to JulioChesse Balogh (I was not thinking too seriously on a name) and send him to a location on Teaching 3:

A new avatar created via our beta registration form lands on NMC Campus on its first log in
It is far from ready, as we are working on the designs now for the NMC Orientation Island. We’d be most interested in hearing your ideas as to what are some key things that should be included in the orientation process and/or what resources, etc might we provide to new edu avatars.

That’s exciting news Alan! Any chance you would be willing to share the code?

Sure Ben. Today was just the first play at it, and I only modified code that LL provides- nothing monumental. Their sample code was more robust for Ruby and Python than the PHP I monkeyed with.
You need though to request for access to the APIs– http://secondlife.com/developers/api/reg.php

excellent ! if you need a newbie Campus Clothing pack – Speak Up !
I suggest a few info stations – with an ‘online’ mentor indicator with a direct IM help facility to the selected mentor.
