Starting today, Ars Virtua is holding a three day conference on Borders, Boundaries & Liminal States -- this will be taking place at NMC Campus at the amphitheater on Learning (see location details)
"Borders, Boundaries & Liminal States", a three day conference in Second Life, will explore divisions and shed light on these ideas and on the nature of the synthetic environment.
Borders are frequently under contention; they are regions that neatly separate two entities and enable a form of deconstruction. However, ... more » »

We have a special session scheduled for NMC Campus Teachers Buzz on May 7 at 9:00am PDT. Hosts RuArt Semaphore and Magda Voss help us welcome Prof. Michael Connors and the virtual design team at University of Wisconsin-Madison to learn about work with Digital Printmaking students in Second Life.
Prof. Connors notes:
My primary interest at this time is to explore the possibilities that online technology brings to the critique - a core element in the art curriculum. A virtual environment ... more » »

There's some exciting work underway at NMC Campus. We are working with the Linden Lab API for account generation that will allow us to host our own new user account creation form on this web site, rather than going through the form at the main Second Life web site. When the account is created, a new avatar will not be sent to the Orientation Island with every other newbie, but they will go to our own custom Orientation Island.
So this ... more » »

We're excited to be able to offer and host a new workshop that will take place in Second Life. Dan Undertone, a.k.a Dan Zellner in real life (Northwestern University), will lead this 8 session workshop that will use the new theater and studio on NMC Campus, the Machinima Building on the Learning sim.
We had a small taste of this last October, when Dan led an activity that was part of the Symposium on Digital Media.
Participants in a movement activity led ... more » »

I take a lot of photos in Second Life using the built in Snapshot tools in Second Life, but thanks to Phil Long at MIT, we got a great set of images that pull back a little. These photos remind us that Second Life is but a window from where we live.
This photos were taken with room light with a slower exposure (a flash would blast out the ... more » »

Due to some internal mixups on announcing times, we ended up posting a meeting time for today's Teacher Buzz session as both 9am and 6pm. Fortunately, we had enough people showup at both to have two rounds of great conversations.
Both took place at the Dreams Community, where currently there is a fair going on with all kinds of booths from educators and people working with helping agencies. It is well worth a visit!
In the morning a group of maybe 10-12 ... more » »

Last night was a momentous evening of music on NMC Campus, with the first simulcast ever of a live orchestra performance into Second Life.. and not only that, at three different locations in world. Those who were present on NMC Campus and the new OneCleveland sim were treated to a magnificent 2 hours of music by Red {an orchetra}, live from the Masonic Auditorium in Cleveland.
The live video was streamed with excellent audio fidelity thanks to the efforts of Case ... more » »
