Last Friday NMC Campus hosted a visit by some new avatars from Williams College, led on a 4 hour tour/visit by Boris Grommet. We met on Research 4, which for now, serves as a sandbox for NMC Campus visitors. This worked out great,a s it was wide open, and we could rez prims as needed. Myself, Lyr Lobo, and Pathfinder Linden provided a one hour segment for our visitors.

Towards the end of yesterday's NMC Conference on the Convergence of Web Culture and Video we took a break from the web-based conference for a Happy Hour on NMC Campus in Second Life.
We had hoped for another round of live music from Johnny99 Gumshoe, but apparently his helicopter had some mechanical issues and he could not make it. So Larry Pixel cued up some great salsa music, and he just relaxed a bit (and a big thanks to the magic ... more » »

Borrowing a riff from the old Dr Hook song:
But the thrill we've never see
Is the thrill that'll get you when you get your picture
On the cover of web site of MIT
What a thrill it was to get a message from our MIT colleagues, letting us know a piece of NMC Campus was on the front of their web site today (they have a grand tradition of regular updates to the front page):
The picture is on the new Teaching sim, and ... more » »

This morning, as part of the NMC Online Conference on the Convergence of Web Culture and Video (an old style flat web format conference) NMC hosted a virtual reception in Second Life. We met in the red carpeted lobby of the new Machinima Studio building, had a go with the people tagging ice breaker activity, and then moved to a stylish new ballroom where Johnny99 Gumshoe streamed a set of his rockin' guitar jams.

Gaming and learning is growing as more and more research is done on the subject and Second Life affords educators a basic gaming engine.Tonight we had a fun and educational NMC Teachers Buzz with Jeremy Koester (aka Jeremy Braver) leading a discussion on Gaming & Learning in Second Life using a small group math activity to get across the points he was making. He quickly got the participants to break out into small groups and follow instructions on a notecard. ... more » »

Trinity University radio station KRTU certainly doesn't believe in baby steps. It's soft launch was a mixed reality event featuring Matt Daly, host of the popular show In Limbo, who interviewed local electronic musicians in the KRTU booth and simultaneously broadcast it into SL from the KRTU Studios at Metaversatility Island.
Despite minimal publicity, the crowd poured in including leading personalities Frog Marlowe, Moo Money, Prokofy Neva, and Ute Hicks, a Trinity alum herself. Calling into the program, she said: Calling ... more » »

As part of our new connections with the Global Kids Digital Media Initiative, we are preparing for hosting several of their events this month on NMC Campus. Since GK is on the TeenGrid, we are working to prepare portions of their events that can be experiences on the main grid. These will take place on one on our new Sims, where Global Kids will eventually be setting up a local office space.
These events are part of Global Kids celebrating their ... more » »

Second Life is just wonderful when (a) the technology works; (b) you can get a good sized crowd gathered; and (c) there is an excellent speaker like we had today on NMC Campus. Dr. Daniel Reed, Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, gave a live presentation today on Computing the Future: The 3-D Net. Our sensors recorded nearly 80 avatars came to NMC campus, and we estimate another 30-40 were ... more » »
