EDUCAUSE Immersive Learning Environments Day 1
CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Mar 27, 2007 10:07pm
This dog is too tired to provide a very detailed summary of the first day of the EDUCAUSE Focus Session on Immersive Learning Environments, but it has been quite a full half day immersion into some exciting projects– including and Economics Game simulation, Second Life, the GeoWall, iCampus remote labs, and Force Feedback Haptic devices.
We aimed to provide some of this content into Second Life on NMC Campus via streaming audio, and hopefully the sound was acceptable and useful for those in attendance (we spotted about 20 avatars in the opening session).
Opening Remarks (Diana Oblinger)
Richard Van Eck set the pace with an opening keynote on Generation G and the 21st Century:

Following this was one of several short presentations by students on their use of these technologies, with today an overview of Using Adaptive Interactive Narrative to Guide Discovery Learning by Jim Thomas, a PhD student at North Carolina State University (see the Liquid Narrative group).
Following this was a series of project parlors, where 5 presenters did short 15 minute intros to specific projects to smaller groups of participants who rotated through all sessions. It was fats and furious for all presenters.
We did stream into NMC Campus (and capture) the audio for Sarah Robbins’ presentation on Immersion and Engagement in a Virtual Classroom: Using Second Life for Higher Education.

Please recognize that this effort to bring this session into SL was a late minute idea, and we are doing everything we can from this end to provide at least some portions of the live events. See the schedule for tomorrow’s live events.
