To make it a little easier for you to visit and view the 3 Gallery Room’s at the aho Museum here at the NMC Campus, a TP unit (Teleport Unit) has been installed at the main Campus Area of the NMC and also outside the aho museum itself. The TP Unit has been marked with floating text above it saying "Art at The NMC - Touch to Use"
To access this unit simply 'touch' it using your mouse in world, ... more » »

This cliche phrase is something you may see in many chat windows. Up until now, voice communication in Second Life was limited to use of technologies that exisit outside of SL - TeamSpeak, Skype, Ventrilo, etc. But as rumors and announcements have rolled out this year, stand back as voice communication is coming as an integrated feature within Second Life.
A few weeks ago we were able to invite a group of 100+ avatars (spread over a few time sessions) onto ... more » »

It's taken some time and travel to regroup after the high level energy of the EDUCAUSE Immersive Learning Environments Focus session in Raleigh. As proven many times before it was great to meet F2F a number of people I've only known as avatars.
Sarah Robbins and Intellagirl Tully, one and the same?
The experimental effort to stream audio into SL form this event was moderately successful, judging from chat feedback from some of the avatars that showed up on NMC Campus to ... more » »

One of the more memorable moments from the conference was during the session put on by Sarah "Intellagirl" Robbins & company. They had a roomful of newbs traipsing around Middletown (where Sarah teaches) in short order, and it was really something to see -- in both worlds. Lots of energy and laughter.
For fun, I switched to an Ent avatar and was promptly asked by Ourania Fizgig if she could snap my photo. Turns out I'd met her ... more » »

Just another reminder that March 29 and March 30, Global Kids is providing a live video stream from the National Service-Learning Conference taking place in Albuquerque.
The conference will be streamed into both the main grid on NMC Campus and the teen grid at Global Kids Island. The location here is on the NMC Teaching sim at:

Some folks were already there early this morning:

Raleigh is just coming alive with azaleas and dogwoods surrounding the Friday Institute (whose airy structure would be right at home in SL) where the ELI spring focus session is being held. I managed to meet up with CDB/Alan early on and briefly discuss logistics, and he helped me locate a tech support guy when we discovered that the guest wireless at UNC wasn't open to SL. There was a nice mix of people at my table: from ... more » »

This dog is too tired to provide a very detailed summary of the first day of the EDUCAUSE Focus Session on Immersive Learning Environments, but it has been quite a full half day immersion into some exciting projects-- including and Economics Game simulation, Second Life, the GeoWall, iCampus remote labs, and Force Feedback Haptic devices.
We aimed to provide some of this content into Second Life on NMC Campus via streaming audio, and hopefully the sound was acceptable and useful for ... more » »

Tomorrow is the EDUCAUSE Focus Session on Immersive Learning Environments taking place in RL in Raleigh, North Carolina. If all goes well, we are going to try and bring the main sessions also into NMC Campus, by streaming audio from the sessions, and by having a few volunteers here, like JS Saltwalter, to help relay info to/from SL.
If you are interested in being a remote participant (e.g. you are not here in Raleigh), join us on NMC Campus at the ... more » »

CDB was kind enough to invite me to blog my experiences in the EDUCAUSE ELI session on Immersive Learning Environments that begins tomorrow in Raleigh, so I thought I'd introduce myself.
I work at a large state university in Florida, in a center devoted to instructional design and instructional technology for f2f and online learning. It's diverse work, everything from individualized consulting to workshop development & delivery. I've been doing it for the past seven years; before that I ... more » »

Flickr has introduced new content filter features that can make it easy for you to include your NMC Campus photos into this site (see flickr blog for more explanation).
Until recently, flickr considered accounts that included mostly Second Life photos as "screenshots", marking these accounts as Not In Public Service Area, and thus, would not show up on search results or public tags. So before today, the photos in the right sidebar of the NMC Campus Observer site were limited to ... more » »
