On Monday January 22, at 12:00 PM PST, a few of us from NMC Campus (myself, Larry Pixel, and Heidi Teecee) will be doing a RL presentation at the EDUCAUSE/ELI conference in Atlanta. We're aiming to start with a demo of Second Life, and are looking for some people willing to show up in world, perhaps wave hello, say/chat a few things, and ideally, be a sort of back channel for the session.

Just announced today is the NMC Virtual Worlds initiative, what was once a single island grows into a larger NMC Campus, and that too will grow into something like an "Educational Archipelago" in Second Life:

We're prepping for a presentation at the EDUCAUSE ELi conference. Second Life is the topic, but also turns out a useful tool for brainstorming.

Dr. Bryan Carter has been using Second Life in his Composition II courses for several semesters now and has some ideas on what works well for his students and what he changed based on feedback and observations of his classes.

NMC Campus is Accreting Land Originally uploaded by NMC Second Life
Not only is our campus growing, but a whole slate of neighbors will be adjoining is this year.
If you've dropped into the NMC Campus Area recently, you may have noticed this checkerboard graphic posted. The NMC Campus we've grown to appreciate this year is completely in the central square.

What a great turnout we had today (40 avatars from across the US, as well as from France, Germany, the U.K.) for our visit to the Otis College gallery.

The first NMC Teacher's Buzz session for 2007 is happening tomorrow, Jan 8, at 9:00 AM PST -- we are meeting at Otis College's Gallery on EduIsland (see meeting details posted last month). Check your local time via the World Time Clock and find your way there via http://tinyurl.com/wh7eu .

My dog eyed view into the crystal ball for 2007 suggests a good chance of more interesting web to SL applications, and tools for teachers to use media to and from what have been rather separate areas. Today, I briefly visited a very interesting collaborative tool, and went away wishing I could really draw.

I am not a Powerpoint user nor do I condone abuse by bullet slides, but since it is so frequently requested, I am looking at some different tools that might make it easier to bring content into SL other than the tedious uploading of images. Web tools should make it fairly easy to read content into SL from outside.

Given that we recently had a change in the last digit of our time clocks (a sly way of saying, "Happy New Year"), we thought it worth sharing how we deal with events and time zones in Second Life. The ability to meet anyone from any RL location, means that timing is critical.
