Trying Out Second Talk
CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Jan 17, 2007 02:01am
How much will the Second Life experience change when we can easily talk by audio rather than typing in chat? There is new tinkering on the edges with the release today of SecondTalk, an inworld device that allows you to find and speak to other avatars via Skype.
I went in to check it out (I had to try on a human avatar because the SecondTalk headphone is so small it got lost in my dog ear!) and met up with a few others tinkering with it.

SecondTalk is a new beta application that enables audio communication in SecondLife via Skype. Wearing a headset, in SL and RL, you can scan for others nearby with SecndTalk capability. met up with 2 others here, and had good Skype conversation with others. Not perfect, but not bad. The interface and set up are a little awkward, but it does work- I chatted with Vincent for a good 15 minutes. The idea is you can use the SecondTalk in world tool to scan for who else is in the vicinity that has the speaking device– if so, in SecondLife, it negotiates a call in Skype between people, and this includes setting up conference calls.
