And for another fabulous phase of the SLATENIGHT session on campus today, this was an exciting presentation by Dell Willberg, creative designer and writer for Slatenight.
Dell displayed some visuals suggesting some uncanny realism for avatars, 3-5 years out, much more realistic natural environments. He predicted:
Within 10 years, 80 percent of the worldwide broadband population will spend 60 percent of their time in virtual reality.
So there is huge potential looming for Second Life's future. Dell thinks the capability will ... more » »

Following our panel discussion with SL musicians, we were treated to live performances frrom three of our guests, each playing from their home, and streaming via the server hosted by Mel Cheeky. This was an extreme highlight to be there for live music of 3 very different styles.
Tune in below to hear all of the songs we heard.

As part of the SLATENIGHT morning presentations for the NMC Campus Symposium on Impact of Digital Media, Lythe Witte, writer for Slatenight, provided a fascinating look into the design and function of art spaces in Second Life. Like her colleague Anya, she used a clever presentation system of a giant, lavlshly illustrated book:

The second part of SLATENIGHT sessions was a brief "fashion" show with commentary by Danielle Damone and Anya Ixchel. The individuals who volunteered to go up on stage answered questions about their choice of representation and interactions in Second Life.
Among the furry avs paraded was this reporter as well as the very very hairy, Seb Basiat:
Danielle Damone asks Seb Basiat a few questions about his fur.
Asked about his avatar, Seb wrote:
I had been looking at furry avvie because I was ... more » »

It was just announced this morning, but we had a great turnout for a 4:00 PM presentation by Jared Pixel on Unexpected Artist and Critic. Jared is always an engaging, powerful, and edgy speaker in person, and in online web conferences, and of course, his avatar was true to form in SL:
To survive the ocean of media we need to understand how we make choices. In the new world of ubiquitous authorship only those with new-media literacy will succeed. This ... more » »

It is getting repetitive, but wow, another jam packed day of discussions and interations as part of the Impact of Digital Media Symposium.
At noon, we had more than 45 avatars in Woolsey Hall classroom for the Second Life Educators (SLED) panel session on "Are We Playing Games? Finding Legitimacy in the Academy". As was noted by moderator Jeremy Kabumpo (Jeremy Kemp RL), it was almost ironic we chose to hold this session in this place that looks much like a ... more » »

Early today we met up with the glamorous Anya Ixchel, as we were testing audio and coordinating for the SLATENIGHT sessions she is helping organize for Thursday. She showed a bit of her materials for her session on "Avatar As Communication: Some Lessons from My students":
