Special Session: Unexpected Artist As Critic
CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Oct 20, 2006 06:05pm
It was just announced this morning, but we had a great turnout for a 4:00 PM presentation by Jared Pixel on Unexpected Artist and Critic. Jared is always an engaging, powerful, and edgy speaker in person, and in online web conferences, and of course, his avatar was true to form in SL:
To survive the ocean of media we need to understand how we make choices. In the new world of ubiquitous authorship only those with new-media literacy will succeed. This presentation examines our ever-evolving relationship with media as both viewer and creator.

Jared Pixel begins his presentation.
Drawing from his passion for art, music, video in its most vibrant forms, Jared makes a strong case for rethinking our concepts of artists, what they do, why they do it.
We know this was a late addition, but we did grab the audio from his session:
And then he blew us away by doing a post presentation of the custom whiteboard (see photo) he brought with him- beyond just flipping slides, it as an echoing feature that would echo on screen all the text from the chat area.
And there is no rest for the Symposium organizers! In about 8 hours, we’ll be launching into the SLATENIGHT array of sessions–every 30 minutes is something different!

Then take a short break, but come back at 1:00 PM for the premiere of Camp Global Kids 2006 “The Year of the Hippo” video.
In Camp GK, 14 teens from 3 countries spent 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks, learning about global issues and building a challenging maze to end child sex trafficking.
There will be a live panel discussion via NMC streaming server in the Gonick Ampitheater.
So spend all day at NMC Campus!
