Digital Media Symposium Days 1&2

CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Oct 10, 2006 03:00pm

Today is the kickoff for the NMC Campus Impact of Digital Media Symposium — we plan to provide an overview of each day, but since today is half gone, we’ll cover what is happening both today and tomorrow.

The event link goes to the NMC Campus wiki, and in true wiki-like fashion, this event has unfolded there, and continues to evolve there. You will find all the information about this 12-day event and its theme. You can find the latest details on the full event schedule or you can download a PDF version of it.

For some activities, we will be inviting you to respond back via our wiki-based discussion questions. And finally, as we have things scheduled over campus. we have created a wiki page for the campus map, each event location is hyperlinked via a SLURL (Second Life URL) that makes it easy to teleport exactly to the right spot.

But let’s review now what is on campus.

Henry Jenkins interview video in Woolsey Hall

On the video screen in the Woolsey Hall classroom (go now), is an interview with Henry Jenkins from the Comparative Media Studies program at MIT. Along with discussing his background in digital media and role on the project, he also talks excitedly about his writing and feedback on his weblog, Confessions of an Aca/Fan.

Video interview with David Buckingham playing in Jacob Hall

Also, today in Jacob Hall (go now), we also have a video interview with David Buckingham, Professor of Education at the Institute of Education, London University. He is also the founder and director of the Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media. As the editor of the MacArthur volume on Identity, David shares his perspectives on the importance of this issue and the work the authors are doing on the Identity volume.

Tomorrow we will be showing the Global Kids in Second Life video, showing how the Global Kids project is using its island in the Teen Grid to promote activities and the unique challenges encountered developing activities within a virtual world. You will interact more with Global Kids later in the Symposium, and a number of our live events will also be streamed into the GK sim.

And we have our first live event tomorrow, at 5:00 PM SLT. Henry VIII will be paying a visit to the Malcolm B. Brown Library to talk about his life (and supposedly rant at his biographers). Our librarians have asked us to come and heckle him during his program.

Stay tuned to the activities posted on the schedule, as more events are unfolding as we go.
