Second Life Library staff are working on a discussion series for the NMC Library. If there are particular topics you would like to discuss, please contact Lorelei Junot. Our goal is to hold one hour open discussions on topics of interest, prepare a list of resources for participants, and if possible, get an expert in the area to lead the discussion. Send your ideas to lbel927@gmail.com. Thanks. more » »

It was quite a few months ago our NMC Campus security cameras caught snapshots of someone darting across the campus grass on a fast green motorcycle. But that is not against the rules.
Forensic analysis identified the rider as Totally Vavoom, whom we had interviewed way back in March 2006, the early launch days of NMC Campus.
And now it seems that RL is imitating SL, since Totally's real life avatar, Vidya Ananthanarayanan (Trinity University), sent us a photo of ... more » »

Not all of our readers may know, but the NMC Campus is starting its rather massive expansion (see information from last week's press conference). The entire current campus fills one Second Life "Sim", a 16-acre plot of land. The new campus will have the current sim at the center, and will have a grand total of 7 sims or 112 acres. Some terraforming is underway now by our builders from Infinite Vision Media.
But an empty sim provides a space ... more » »

After Troy McLuham's session Life on Mars, NMC Campus CEO Larry Pixel (aka Larry Johnson) provided a few closing remarks on this extraordinary event that lasted 12 days. You can find the audio recording below, and you can find links to all session material (audio, chat transcripts, etc) from the event schedule.

As the last scheduled session of the NMC Campus Impact of Digital Media Symposium, Troy McLuham (International Spaceflight Museum) presented a session on "Life on Mars?".
Troy used the chat session to provide a lot of information about what scientists can tell us about Mars (as opposed to what Hollywood has concocted about the Red Planet).

Today at 11:00 AM was the headline event (well, actually, they all were!), but haivng Howard Rheingold in world for a keynote is definitely a high water mark for our Impact of Digital Media Symposium... 12 days of presentations, art, music, discussion, and interaction. We will have some stats to share soon, but our sensors recorded more than 1000 unique avatars came to NMC Campus during the Symposium.

At 1:00 PM today, Barry Joseph and Rafi Santo from the Global Kids project visited the NMC Campus Symposium on Impact of Digital Media to share with us the results of the Camp Global Kids project.
In Camp GK, 14 teens from 3 countries spent 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks, learning about global issues and building a challenging maze to end child sex trafficking. This took place entirely on a private island in the Second ... more » »

At 11:15 AM today, we announced the winners of the Impact of Digital Media Photo Contest.
This contest was initially for images that best represented the themes of this Symposium from either SL or RL. Originally we had categories for these.... but many of them blurred the boundaries. So we decided to give awards to the top 5.
So the winning photos are...

After a full-on morning for the activities arranged for us by SLATENIGHT, Anya Ixchel closed with a few remarks. This is remarkable as the excellent series of presentations were intially geared to be run during a "Australia-friendly" time. As it turned out, by the time we wrapped up, for our presenters in Sydney it was 4 AM!
Thanks Anya!
Listen below for Anya's closing remarks. Thanks to her and averyone at SLATENIGHT for such a great series of sessions. Be sure ... more » »

The last session for the SLATENIGHT day at NMC Campus highlighted the efforts of educators Heidi TeeCee and Danielle Damone, who in real life provide instructional design support for faculty and students at Seton Hall University.
In Engaging the Disengaged: Using SL to Revitalize the Undergraduate Classroom, they shared their experiences bringing a class of students for a psychology class into Second Life for activities in virtual team building.
