Text 100 is a large media/ public relations firm (in RL) and recently announced their presence as having an office in SL.
As part of their PR on PR, they have published a nicely done video introduction to Second Life available on YouTube... like NMC's Seriously Engaging video, these videos, as many have told us, an excellent entrance to help the unfamiliar First Worlders and idea of the potential of SecondLife, prior to an actual visit
When you watch the video, you ... more » »

Anyone with more than a fresh of Welcome Island avatar senses that Second Life can be far from predictable. We had a tenuosu situation Monday for the 6:00 PM (SLT/PST) NMC Teacher's Buzz Session -- due to some attack scripts wrecking havoc in Second Life, the world was closed around 5:20 to right up to 6:00 PM. We had planned to run a SkypeCast audio, and about 8-10 folks made the connection. It looked like it might be an audio ... more » »

A new article in Nature, Concept of 'personal space' survives in virtual reality, summarizes some fascninating research from Stanford researchers that suggest body language, eye contact, and physical space known in the real world are replicated with the same gender differences in Second Life:
With thousands of people using Second Life at any one time, Nick Yee and colleagues at Stanford University realised it presented a chance to assess whether users interacted in similar ways to people in the real ... more » »

To faciliate the communication, and also just to experiment with new technology, for the September 18 NMC Teacher's Buzz meeting, we are going to enable a way to talk via audio using Skype.
If you are a Skype user, you can join our "Skypecast", a group shared audio channel. (If you have not used Skype, it is a free application for Mac OSX and Windows that allows audio communication via the web... like a telephone without the telephone company.) Just visit ... more » »

Just like RL campuses, the folks working at the NMC Campus have been caught up with the activities of the start of the academic year. We wanted to put out a quick preliminary note that the next meeting for the NMC Campus Teacher's Buzz will be 6:00 PM SLT/PST on September 18 (http://tinyurl.com/o33o5).
For now, we are trying to alternate our meetings between 9:00 AM (Europe friendly times, we hope) and 6:00 PM. Look for us on NMC campus gathered ... more » »

It's not really breaking news by now that Harvard's Charles Nesson is teaching a law class in Second Life. In this YouTube video, he rolls onto RL Harvard on his motorcycle to explain his class, and somewhere in betwen, the video morphs him to his SL persona. Learn more about CyberOne: Law in the Court of Public Opinion
But ask yourself, what is the compelling feature of SL shown here for teaching? They meet in Second Life to watch video lectures ... more » »

We had a very vibrant and fast paced, 15-avatar meeting, on Labor Day about orientations to Second Life for teachers and students. My heartfelt thanks to my co-facilitator Heidi TeeCee and we look forward to others stepping up and leading the meetings! The full transcript of the meeting can be found on the Teachers Buzz section of the NMC Campus Wiki. The wide-ranging discussion covered education contexts within Second Life, current resources and needs, issues related to orientations, types ... more » »

The next biweekly NMC Teacher Buzz Meeting is this Mon 4 Sep (a holiday in the US we know). The meeting will be on the NMC campus at 9am SLT/PST (http://tinyurl.com/o33o5) to make it more EU friendly as requested last time.
Based on the summary from the brainstorm in our first session, the discussion topic for this week will be Orientations for faculty and students new to SL.
Hosts will be Nick Noakes (Corwin Carillon) and Heidi Trotta (Heidi TeeCee). Look for ... more » »
