Heart Murmur Sim, Assessment of Learning in SL- Interview with a Man in a Surgical Mask

CDB Barkley (aka Alan Levine) : Sep 25, 2006 07:07pm

Today, our Studio NMC took its audio equipment on the road, and we visited with Jeremy Kemp (Jeremy Kabumpo in SL) over at his Heart Murmur Simulation site, located in the Waterhead region of Second Life (find it via a slurl), which turns out to be some prime real estate, near Welcome Island and Path Finder Linden’s neighborhood.

Jeremy “Kabumpo” Kemp… maybe his tag line is, ‘I’m not a Doctor and I don’t play one in Second Life’

In our audio interview (see below), Jeremy shared his background in virtual worlds and his position woth San Jose State University. You can learn more about Jeremy’s work at his Prosim Virtua blog. And educators everywhere in SL owe Jeremy a big thanks for his work in hosting the SimTeach wiki (a must bookmark link) and the Second Life Educator (SLED) forums.

Interview with Jeremy Kabumpo

Jeremy walks me through the Heart Murmur Simulation

Jeremy provided a quick walk through tour of his Heart Murmur simulation, which features use of special audio features to provide the needed sounds to simulate cardiac auscultation. But what is more interesting is the data Jeremy is collecting via the sim’s surveys and user tracking that will be the subject of his dissertation. He reports that he has collected data on more than 2500 unique visitors to this sim, and is rather excited about the amount of robust assessment he will be able to make.

You can experience more from a YouTube machinima movie that walks you through the Heart Murmur Simulation:

Finally be sure to listen near the end as Jeremy describes the Simteach Teacher’s Lounge event on Monday, Oct 2, Noon (SLT/PST), when there will be a guest presentation from John Bransford, one of writers behind the brilliant How People Learn books. If you are interested in attending, use this slurl on Oct 2 to teleport to the location (Palladium 120,120)

Thanks again Jeremy for the tour! You make a great looking surgeon in Second Life garb.

[…] Alan Levine from the New Media Consortium called me up at 1pm today for a quick Q&A. He recorded the session and posted it here: http://www.nmc.org/sl/2006/09/25/jeremy-kemp/ This is rambling, manic Jeremy. I got out most of the thoughts I’ve been working on lately and plenty of esoteric tangential stuff as well. Good fun. Thanks Alan! « Video game violence - lit review […]

[…] There are a number of places to find research into Education and MUVEs. Chris Dede and John Bransford are two top researchers in this field that oughta merit some watching and review. Similarly, Jeremy Kemp of San Jose State has set up SimTeach - a space for logging a lot of activities and characters in this area, Second Life in particular. SimTeach is THE spot to look at first for raising capacity and awareness of these issues. Jeremy’s Heart Murmur Sim and the Sloodle mashup of Second Life and Moodle are cornerstones in the emerging SL education (or SLED) marketplace (click here to sign up for the SLED group list and see a few spots to check out relevant to them). Other great places to check out: * other blogs categorized as SLED blogs - web logs with focus and discussion about Education in Second Life. * Publications on MUVE research at Harvard with Dr. Dede (here) * Tracking the growth of Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) (c’est ici) * Grant projects that other universities are engaged in (see it) * Sarah “IntellaGirl” Robbins research page (go to it). She’s the most visible presence as a serious researcher holding classes and doin’ stuff in SL. * Suffern Middle School’s efforts to develop a virtual presence in Second Life (click this) * and the SecondLife Herald is a wonderful general-purpose blog about all things SL that you oughta paw through: (start pawing) […]
