Today's Studio NMC interview was with Lorenzo Stork (a.k.a Larry Miller, form University of Tennessee). We met up this morning in Second Life, and when I asked him for a favorite spot I could take a photo, his reply was, "You know, I really like to fly!"
In the audio interview below, Lorenzo share his obvious excitement for Second Life, and some of the places he has discovered on his explorations. He was especially intrigued by the Idaho Bioterrorism simulation. We ... more » »

Shall we chat in different languages? This is now something that can be done in Second Life.
If you are in Second Life, you know that the primary communication channel is the text chat area (and if you have been on the internet for more than a few years, you know that this is a communication mode from the 1980s or older).
But a more than significant number of SL residents are not native speakers of English, and we are sure a ... more » »

We have a new audio service from NMC Campus... an in-world radio station. Okay, it is not really a radio station, but we are using a new way to provide audio content from or about NMC Campus.
Tuning your itunes or Windows Media Player to KNMC at http://www.nmc.org/sl/knmc.pls will connect you to a selected audio stream coming from our satellite. For example, currently playing is Larry Pixel's presentation from the SLCC Convention, which just a few minutes ago replaces the recorded ... more » »

I was honored to have been invited to provide a keynote presentation for the Education in SL track at the 2006 Second Life Community Convention, held last weekend in San Francisco. This session was sponsored and arranged by the folks on the Second Life in Education Mailing List (great job, guys!).
We had a very crowded room for the session, and we apologize for our virtual participants as we struggled with some internet connectivity issues. However, I did manage to record ... more » »

NMC Campus "Teacher's Buzz Session" Aug 21, 2006
Last night was our first gathering on campus for the NMC Campus Teacher's Buzz Session. What a wonderful turnout with at least 24 avatars gathered around the campfire, with visitors from the U.K. (at 2:00 AM! woot to AngryBeth Shortbread for staying up late) and co-facilitator Corwin Carillon from Hong Kong (where yesterday it was tomorrow morning).
Pretty much this was a session of ... more » »

As part of our effort to create some regularly scheduled events on NMC Campus, we are aiming to launch an informal meetup specifically for teachers already teaching in Second Life, or those who wish to learn from the brave pioneers. Therefore, we will gather every other week on NMC Campus for a "Buzz Session" just to meet and trade ideas, tips, etc.
Look for the first session coming this Monday, 6:00 PM SLT (PST) on NMC Campus... we have set aside ... more » »

One of the tools, features, tasks we expect teachers using Second Life is an easy way to be able to present visuals, either slideshows, or SL versions of (we hesitate to say...) PowerPoint. You can already see on NMC Campus a number of places where there are media screens, but they are set up now as high level tools that only the campus admins have access to.
There are other sorts of screen display devices you can find in Second Life, ... more » »

We had quite the turnout yesterday for our Artists on the Green event, where both art and its creators were both assembled on NMC Campus to dialogue about art in Second Life.
Co-host Sasun Steinback welcomes attendees to the event
Our panel session with Second Life audieoces ran for almost an hour, and for many it was the first time to pair the voice with the avatar-- we were able to bring in the artists by teleconference and Skype and broadcast it ... more » »

This was not even intended as an interview, but today we just happened to converse online with Second Life Artist Seifert Surface, one of our panelists for tomorrow's mega-art show on NCM Campus, Artists on the Green.
Chatting with Seifert Surface
For tomorrow's event, we have a live panel discussion with several artists who work in Second Life. This session will be streamed live into NMC campus via our audio channel. Arranging this has involved a host of new technologies for behind ... more » »
