Graduate Students in SL
Danielle Damone (aka Danielle Mirliss) : Jul 15, 2006 07:41pm
I have been meaning to contribute to the Second Life Observer for sometime now but real life has been getting in the way. I would first like to introduce myself - in real life my name is Danielle Mirliss but in Second Life you might already know me as Danielle Damone. By day I am a Senior Instructional Designer for Seton Hall University and by night I am a graduate student at Teachers College, Columbia University, adjunct faculty member for Seton Hall, online graduate assistant and active member of the RL Grad Student Group in SL.
The RL Grad Student Group is a smaller subset of the larger educator group (SLED) but all are welcome to our meetings. The purpose of the group is to provide support for graduate students conducting research in or examining the use of virtual worlds. We meet every Wednesday at 6pm SLT (6pm PST/9pm EST) and host a variety of speakers and workshops.
Recently the Grad Students and SLED (SL Educators) hosted a presentation by Dr. Christopher Dede, Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and MUVE researcher, on the River City project. I would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Dede for taking the time to visit Second Life and share his expertise the group. In addition, I would like to extend another thank you to Jeremy Kemp (SL Jeremy Kabumpo) for organizing the event. If you would like to review the transcript it is available at simteach.com.

If you would like more information on the group and our activities please check out our wiki page at simteach.com.
Hope to see you in world ![]()

Danielle,
thanks for your post and link to the grad student page.
I’m going to teach an undergraduate class in field work/ethnography in virtual spaces in the winter term (Jan. 07) so I’ll be interested in keep tabs on the grad group’s progress.
no need to re-invent the wheel… at some point, I’ll probably ask to share protocols, etc.
peace
