Live Space Shuttle Coverage
Originally uploaded by NMC Second Life
On Saturday, July 1, 2006, the International Space Flight Museum hosted live coverage(NASA video stream on screen) of the space shuttle launch. Too bad the weather did not cooperate!
The International Space Flight Museum must be one of the most amazing builds in Second Life. All of the work here has been done by volunteers, and there are seemingly a long list of interactive tours and exhibits and a lot of friendly helping avatars (people). It’s on my list to spend some time there– I am very intrigued to see the simulated Mars Rover area.
Over the weekend, the had announced live coverage of the Space Shuttle liftoff- I just made it online (counitng the seconds while the Second Life update downloaded) just to see the announcement that it was cancelled (and ditto for Sunday).
When I arrive not a seat was left, but that is no problem in Second Life– you can place yourself anywhere, and anywhere is a front seat. They had the live NASA video stream coming in here on 2 displays.
And although NASA did not send up a shuttle that day, within minutes, someone had set up four small rockets on stage and let them loose!
So this is one of our ideas for the NMC Campus– we develope an NMC Campus “Expedition” Club that meets on a regular basis to share the interesting things and places they have seen off campus. Volunteers would agree to “lead” a trip, where anyone interested can explore, then return here to Campus to hold a discussion (and someone writes up a summary to publish jere in the Observer).
What do you think? Is anyone interested in working on this? Leading a trip?
Where might we go? For a starting point, look at the SimTeach wiki’s Top 20 Educational Locations in Second Life
