Building Vegas

We will aim to prevent all references to things “staying in Vegas” but felt it worth sharing this YouTube clip showing some of the construction of a Second Life version of Las Vegas:
Now many of us might feel that RL Vegas has a sufficient level of avatars roaming the strip, so it might be curious to see what a SL version of this environment is like. Much care has seemingly been put into the details of the architecture. And the movie subtly shows again, that under the 3D graphics are mostly blocks, cubes, and cylinders with textures applied.
Credit for this story link goes to Vegas, Baby, Virtual Vegas from The Click Heard Round the World where the author does a great job of juxtaposing photos of RL Vegas and SL Vegas.
The whole trip to SL Vegas was another of these meta-experiences that are common for me now. The real Las Vegas itself is already a copy of other actual places: Paris, Venice, New York, etc. So the SL Vegas is a copy of a copy. This is most apparent when visiting the SL New York New York. I.e. last night I was sitting in my downtown Manhattan apartment watching my avatar visting a simulation of a casino / hotel which is a simulation of the actual city of Manhattan! Go grok that for awhile, you philosophy majors.
Visit Virtual Vegas in SL and leave there what you like.
Here in the NMC Campus Observer, we’d like to post new stories on interesting places you find elsewhere in Second Life, and maybe eve arrange some “field trip” like organized activities. Been somewhere interesting in Second Life? Let us know! And we can give you access to post your field notes in the Observer.

Las Vegas is for sale! I’ve just seen it on ebay. Apparently the owner is developing a new sim and doesn’t have time for LV now. It’s only at $21 so far
