Let’s Meet Under Water!

While the NMC Campus has many traditional places to meet (a boardroom, classrooms, library, etc), there are other more curious places to hold discussions.
Here, on June 14, 2006, we hosted a group of visiting graduate students who belong to a newloy formed RL EdD/PhD Students in SL group, the Second Life Grad Student Colony. Most of them are people interested in teaching/studying gaming and virtual worlds.
A few things we learned is that we need ot provide detailed instructions if we meet anywhere other than the landing pad atop the Spohrer Center. Someone in the group kindly placed a teleport button near the campus map that led the visitors to the quiet spot we had chosen as a place to hold some discussion.
Also, we had only half the group who managed to connect to the TeamSpeak server– the audio quality was great, but it was not fair to the others, so we did all the exchanges via chat.
This was prety much a high level overview of the NMC Campus, and some more fishing for ideas on how we might use the space. Many were extremely complimentary of the design and feel of the campus. A number of them offered suggestions of some other people to consider collaborations
For fun, we dropped into the water and showed them the hidden reef.. there’s no reason why meetings could not take place here. We also flew to the Aho Museum and took in the art work, and the crowd started dispersing as they explored other areas.
A few joined me over to the library, and lastly it was Francis left asking me the tough, but good questions about this environment. I ducked out so I could make dinner
It was a fun experience, but quite unlike RL meetings… it wil be interesting to see how we can either stick or divert from the norm as we do more work in Second Life.
