A Virtual Tour of Our Virtual Campus
Larry Pixel (aka Larry Johnson) : Jun 3, 2006 06:16am
A feature soon to be made available on the NMC Campus is an in-world dispenser that provides a device you can use to get a virtual tour of the campus, descriptions of the main areas, and a way to easily teleport to each one. This will be added to the area new people land (the roof ot the Spohrer Center) and is meant to be a self-guided campus tour.
Below you will find some example of the content that will be used in the new device.

Gonick Amphitheatre
The Gonick Amphitheatre sits literally at the center of the NMC Campus and is the site of the campus’ largest events. With three screens, the amphitheatre provides presenters access to the latest multimedia and streaming technologies, and provides the audience with a media rich experience. An audio server provides two-way audio support for as many as 100 simultaneous attendees.

The Aho Museum
The Aho Museum is home to the NMC’s Campus’s permanent collection and provides gallery space to visiting artists and collections from both real world galleries and from with Second Life. The primary mission of the museum is to provide a space to explore the boundaries between art, representation, and information in a setting that is at once beautiful and engaging.

The Malcolm Brown Library
The NMC Campus’s Library is modeled on the Beneicke Rare Book and Manuscript Library on the campus of Yale University, and like that building, the Malcolm Brown Library also has walls that respond to the world around it by changing color dynamically. The Malcolm Brown Library’s mission is to explore the intersection between the virtual worlds of the Internet and of Second Life.

Jacob Hall
Jacob Hall is one of two traditional teaching spaces on the NMC Campus, each of which provides extensive multimedia presentation capabilities – including video, slides, music, audio, and web links – to a group of as many as 32 people at once, with an audio server providing multiple two-way real time audio channels.

Board Room
The Board Room is an unique forum for a small meeting of up to 12 people, with an elegant corporate setting. The NMC presentation technology is also present in this smaller meeting space, which is connected to the museum’s rooftop garden via a photonic cable car system.

Sandbox in the Sky
The Sandbox in the sky floats about 500 feet above the NMC campus and is accessible via a special elevator system located adjacent to the Gonick Amphitheatre. Visitors to NMC Campus are encouraged to try their hand at the creative aspects of this virtual world, and the Sandbox is the place to do just that. A special deposit box lets visitors enter their creations into an ongoing exhibition of user-created sculpture showcased on the campus below.

Spohrer Center Rooftop Sculpture Garden
The Spohrer Center Rooftop Sculpture Garden sits above the Huntley Ballroom, another large-group gathering space within the Spohrer Welcome Center. The Sculpture Garden features the work of renowned artists within Second Life and showcases the fascinating possibilities for creative expression within this virtual world.
