Our campus techs have been busy building some new tools here at the NMC Campus Observer. You may or may not know this, but the NMC Campus is not something anyone in Second Life can find by wandering around-- it is a "private" island. When first opened, it was set up so Campus Administrators had to manually add individuals to Second Life Groups that permitted them to find the campus.
After some intense committee meetings (I think they were conducted floating ... more » »

We will aim to prevent all references to things "staying in Vegas" but felt it worth sharing this YouTube clip showing some of the construction of a Second Life version of Las Vegas:
Now many of us might feel that RL Vegas has a sufficient level of avatars roaming the strip, so it might be curious to see what a SL version of this environment is like. Much care has seemingly been put into the details of the architecture. And ... more » »

With our recent opening of the virtual doors to NMC Campus, we hope to expand our series of Studio NMC interviews with folks that come on campus. IN these interviews, we use external audio technology, in this case Skype, to have a casual conversation as we visit some spot on the NMC Campus.
Yesterday we met up with Corwin Carillon, an admitted Second Life "newbie":
and spent some some time just chatting about Second Life, the barrier for entry, potential for future ... more » »

Leave the Fish Alone!
While the NMC Campus has many traditional places to meet (a boardroom, classrooms, library, etc), there are other more curious places to hold discussions.
Here, on June 14, 2006, we hosted a group of visiting graduate students who belong to a newloy formed RL EdD/PhD Students in SL group, the Second Life Grad Student Colony. Most of them are people interested in teaching/studying gaming and virtual worlds.
A few things we learned is that we need ot ... more » »

During the Friday night live session from the NMC Summer Conference in and into the NMC Campus, our guests from Electric Sheep Company opened with a newly produced fine minute video NMC Campus: Seriously Engaging. This piece nicely provides an overview of Second Life, how people are building a new way of real work and interaction there, and concluding with an overview of the NMC Campus.
It has a lovely narration and impressive visuals, don't you agree? This will be a ... more » »

At the Friday night session at the NMC 2006 Summer Conference, we were fortunate enough to have as guests on our real world, Giff Constable and Sara Van Gorden of the Electric Sheep Company, part of the creative team that built the NMC Campus.
We were able to bring this session in live to the NMC Second Campus as a video stream displayed on the big screen of the Gonick Amphitheater:
From Dream to Virtual Reality
Our session started with a newly produced ... more » »
